The Western Region Police Command has served notice that the four survivors from Tuesday’s illegal mining operations at Saanso near Hunni Valley would be arrested as soon as they get well.
Speaking to Joy News, the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kofi Duku Arthur says the law would deal with the four survivors because “galamsey” is illegal.
“I understand they are in a very bad state. They have been in there for over 24 hours so they have been sent to the hospital. Galamsey is illegal so anybody who indulges in it would be arrested. We would take necessary action against them,” DCOP Arthur stated.
The four survivors had a near death experience when the pit in which they were mining caved in on them. Three of their colleagues met their untimely death.
Joy News can confirm that their bodies have since been exhumed from the pit by a rescue team made up of personnel from Abosso Goldfields Limited (AGL) and the Police.
The deceased were identified as James Boa and Addae both aged 21 and hail from Wassa Nkwanta near Wassa Nsuaem and Kingsley 38, a citizen of Beahu near Takoradi.
A medical team from the Tarkwa Government Hospital led by the Senior Medical Officer Dr Francis Acquah performed the autopsy at the site, because the bodies were decomposing. The bodies have been handed over to their relatives for burial.
Tuesday’s accident is the second in three days after a similar one at Dadieso, in another part of the region.
