Libyan Leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi has said the Accra Summit of the African Union (AU) is "a historic hour" to take decisive action to end the division and lift the continent out of backwardness and poverty.
"We should make up for the past. We should not waste anymore time. We have to take decisive decision for the realisation of the vision of the continental unity championed by the African hero, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah," he said.
He was speaking during a courtesy call on President John Agyekum Kufuor at the Castle, Osu.
Colonel Gaddafi who has been pushing for the establishment of a continental Government, a common African currency and Army, said it was through this that Africa could become as prosperous and powerful as the United States of America and China.
"Ghana means a lot for Africa. It was from here that the call for unity emerged."
He noted that if African leaders at the time of Ghana's first leader, Dr Nkrumah, had heeded his proposal for political unity, over 40 years ago, Africa's situation would have been completely different from what it was today. We would have become more powerful."
President Kufuor, who is the Chairman of the AU, said Ghana wanted a healthy debate on the Union Government for Africa, characterized by mutual respect and confidence so that at the end, Africa would speak with one voice.
He said he was expecting almost all Heads of State and Government in Africa to join in the debate.
The decisions reached should lead to a happy and prosperous future for the continent.
