Fourteen boxers will represent the Greater Accra Region at this year’s Inter-Regional Amateur Boxing Championships scheduled for June 11 to15 at Sunyani, the Brong Ahafo Regional capital.
The boxers were selected based on their performance at the ongoing Regional Amateur Boxing League organized by the Greater Accra Amateur Boxing Association (GAABA).
Gideon Quartey, Acting Chairman of GAABA told the GNA Sports on Monday that the selected boxers have the capabilities to achieve positive results for the Region.
He said the selected boxers included Jessy Lartey – Flyweight, Raphael Mensah – Bantamweight, Benjamin Lamptey – Light welterweight, Matthew Nandoli – Light heavyweight and Maxwell Amponsah – Heavyweight.
The others are Nii Ofoli Tetteh and Isaac Sackey – Featherweight, Evans Dodoo and Victor Kuwornu – Lightweight, Abraham Afful and Ebenezer Sowah – Welterweight and the Middleweight trio of Emmanuel Martey, King Paul and Charles Azumah.
The boxers are expected to leave on Wednesday for Sunyani ahead of the opening ceremony on Friday, June 11, 2008.
Only eight of the boxers will be eligible for participation in the championship, according to guidelines set out by the organizing committee.
The Ashanti and Upper East Regions will also present eight boxers each.
