Assembly members in the Ga West District Assembly on Saturday called on President John Agyekum Kufuor to nominate a Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) to speed up the development of the area.
“This district is lagging behind in terms of development. Our District Assembly’s Common Fund is still there and even projects that were started have come to a standstill because we don’t have a leader,” Mr Godfred Akpanya, Assemblyman for Trobo, said at a news conference on Saturday.
He said on June 30 President Kufuor sent a letter asking Mr Eric Quartey-Papafio, the MCE, to vacate his position.
Mr Akpanya said assembly members received letters signed by Mr Alex Adu Brakoh, Ga West District Secretary, inviting them to attend a meeting to vote on the Presiding Member who the President had nominated as MCE.
The assembly members were also to elect a new Presiding Member.
But before the meeting could start Alhaji Awudu Yeremiah, Deputy Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Environment, announced to the assembly members that there was a directive from the presidency that “due to a clean up exercise going on the confirmation of the appointed MCE should be postponed.’’
Since nothing had been according to him to approve the nominee to enable the district continue with its development agenda.
