Freed convict re-arrested

A man who was acquitted by a court in Bolgatanga on Monday has been re-arrested. The 27-year-old man, Yakubu Saddat Mohammed, had a 30-year sentence for illegal arms possession reversed by a High Court in the town. Less than a day after he was set free, he is back in the grips of the police for a retrial, Joy News correspondent Joseph Osei reported on Tuesday. Mohammed is expected to be retried on same charges, Northern Regional Crime Officer Edward Tabiru, told Joy News, insisting there was an “error” in the proceedings. The suspect was arrested on 1, December, 2009 and within 24 hours sent to court. He allegedly pleaded guilty during his first appearance and was consequently sentenced on his own plea. But family members are said to have expressed worry about how the trial went, prompting an appeal. The Bolgatanga High Court acquitted the suspect and freed him. Correspondents say Mohammed was re-arrested early Tuesday by the Tamale police on the advice of the Attorney-General's office. Story by Fiifi Koomson/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
