The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has reassured Ghanaians that the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy will be maintained and strengthened under his leadership.
Speaking to Christian leaders in Kumasi on Monday, November 11, Mahama emphasised that his administration would introduce dedicated funding to ensure the policy’s sustainability and effectiveness.
He addressed public concerns, dismissing allegations that he would cancel Free SHS as a “political gimmick” meant to mislead voters.
Mahama highlighted the positive impact of the Free SHS programme, noting that it has significantly expanded access to education.
However, he stressed that sustainable funding is essential to maintain the programme’s quality and to address its current challenges. “Free SHS has come to stay,” Mahama affirmed, underlining the NDC’s commitment to not only retain the policy but also to enhance it for future generations.
The former president’s remarks were aimed at clarifying the NDC’s position on Free SHS amidst ongoing debate over its implementation.
He pointed out that, while the current programme has provided greater access to secondary education, its quality must be prioritised through reliable funding. “We must ensure it’s well-funded to improve its quality and keep it going,” he explained, underscoring his administration’s approach to making Free SHS a sustainable initiative.
In addition to promising sustainable funding, Mahama highlighted the broader importance of quality education.
He assured that under his leadership, Free SHS would receive the necessary financial support to enhance its effectiveness and respond to the demands of an evolving education system.
This, he argued, would ultimately benefit students and better prepare them for the future.
