The Foursquare Gospel Church in Ghana is celebrating 50 years in ministry.
The event is being commemorated with year-long activities designed to engage all age groups, deepen spiritual connections, and give back to the community following a major milestone since its founding in 1974.
As part of the celebration, members of the church hit the streets of Accra with a walk, sharing the good news of Christ with people and gathered at the Accra Academy School for a family funfair filled with soccer games, lime and spoon, Ludo and Oware competition.
The golden jubilee celebration themed “Greater Glory,” will be crowned with a national convention dubbed Divine Connection 2024, scheduled for Monday, 25th November to Sunday, 1st December 2024 at the Foursquare City located in Mataheko, Accra.
The Foursquare Story
History of the Foursquare Gospel Church International
The Foursquare Gospel Church, International began as a vibrant faith movement in the early 20th century. It was founded in 1923 by Evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson in Los Angeles, California. Aimee was a passionate, creative, and energetic woman whose remarkable life showcased God’s miraculous mercy. She sparked revivals, built a major evangelical center in Los Angeles, and touched countless lives.
Driven by her mission to spread the gospel and God’s love, Aimee created a church based on Jesus Christ’s teachings, focusing on four core beliefs: Jesus as Savior, Healer, Baptizer with the Holy Spirit, and Coming King. This “four-square” gospel inspired millions around the world.
Starting in the United States, the Foursquare Gospel Church grew internationally, spreading its message across continents. In 1974, the movement reached Ghana, launching a new chapter of ministry and growth.
A small but dedicated group of believers in Ghana began sharing the gospel and serving their communities. Today, the church has grown with 65 branches throughout Ghana, making a significant impact and spreading hope through evangelism, discipleship, and community engagement.
History of the Foursquare Gospel Church in Ghana
The Foursquare Gospel Church was established in Ghana in 1974, led by a Nigerian missionary, after an initial attempt by American missionaries in 1958 did not succeed. Part of the global Foursquare movement, which spans over 150 countries with more than 8.8 million members, Foursquare Ghana began with a crusade at Mantse Agbonaa in James Town, Accra, under the leadership of Papa Nyann. Early members like Papa Nyann, Elder Adofo, Madam Theresa Quashie, and Mrs. Diana Mensah helped form the church’s foundation.
Rev. Dr. Bisi Orebayo, the first missionary from Nigeria, was joined by Pastor Emmanuel Aladiran in 1975. By 1976, the church had relocated to 17 Mount Zion Lane, Mataheko in Accra. A turning point came in 1977 when Archbishop Benson Idahosa held a crusade at Mataheko, igniting rapid growth. In 1979/80, Ghanaian Pastor Edison Lamptey expanded the church’s reach by establishing a branch in Kumasi.
In 1982, with the formation of the National Executive Council, Rev. R.M. Barnor became the church’s first General Supervisor, later serving as the first General Overseer in 1984 when Foursquare Ghana gained autonomy from Nigeria. With support from Rev. Dr. Jack Hayford and Foursquare USA’s Church on the Way, Foursquare Ghana established its national headquarters at 17 Mount Zion Lane in 1983.
Recently, Foursquare Ghana acquired the former Central University Campus at Mataheko in Accra, now named “Foursquare City,” as the church’s new national headquarters. This milestone not only provides a central hub for ministry but also marks an exciting chapter of growth for the church in Ghana.
Over the years, leadership has evolved, with Rev. Francis Graham and Rev. Christopher Marfo Ahenkorah succeeding Rev. Barnor. In 2019, Rev. Dr. Francis Sey took on the role of General Overseer, continuing the church’s mission of impact and expansion.
