The Asikuma Odoben Brakwa District Assembly in collaboration with Community Based Rural Development Project and the District Fire Service Secretariat has organised two-day fire fighting training for 42 fire fighting volunteers from seven communities in the district.
The communities were Breman Asikuma, Amanfopong, Jamera, Ochisoa, Benin, Nwomaso and Amoandah.
It was aimed at equipping the participants with the requisite knowledge to protect the river Ochi-Narkwa Basin ecology from fire distraction and its dangers and effects on the environment and mankind.
Mr. George Amoah, a retired Fire Prevention Officer took the Volunteers through topics like, Chemistry of fire combustion, Management of Fire outbreaks in the homes, farms, and the office places, Fire prevention, fire laws, bush fires, advantages and disadvantages of fire, and disaster management.
Mr. Ashley Djan the Acting District Co-ordinating Director, who deputized for the District Chief Executive of the area, advised the volunteers to put the knowledge and skills acquired at their training to the benefit of their respective communities.
He asked them to organize public fora to effectively educate the people on the harmful effects of fire disasters and the need to avoid them.
Mr. Desmond Duometu from the office of Community Base Rural Development Project was optimistic the volunteers would intensify their sensitization activities to protect the Ochi-Narkwa Basin against bush fires.
He appealed to the district Assembly to assist them train more fire volunteers to help "fire fighting as we enter the dry season".
