A recent parliamentary proceeding has sparked national outrage following an unidentified member’s remark: “Sit down, daughter of a murderer.”

Several individuals have petitioned Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin to identify the culprit, arguing that the comment tarnishes the legacy of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings.

Among those calling for action is former Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey-Agbo, who is demanding a full-scale investigation into the matter.

Speaking to the media on Monday, he condemned the remark as inappropriate and unacceptable.

He stressed the need for a thorough probe to identify those responsible and hold them accountable.

Defending Rawlings’ Legacy

Mr Afotey-Agbo also addressed historical criticisms of Rawlings, particularly regarding his role in military takeovers.

“Rawlings dealt with murderers—not because he moved with them, but because he punished them. He ensured justice for victims of wrongful killings, even under a military regime,” he stated.

He further explained that while coups often involve resistance and unintended casualties, Rawlings was not directly responsible for extrajudicial killings.

Instead, he insisted that those who unlawfully took matters into their own hands were held accountable.

Calls for Apology from the NPP Minority Caucus

Mr Afotey-Agbo has urged the leadership of the NPP Minority Caucus to take responsibility and issue an unreserved apology to Korle Klottey MP, Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, and the Rawlings family.

“Parliament has cameras everywhere. A proper investigation will reveal who made that statement. The person responsible must be held accountable,” he insisted.

He also called on Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, to take a stand on behalf of the caucus.

“The NPP group must stop hiding. Afenyo-Markin should own up and speak on their behalf. This is about integrity,” Mr Afotey-Agbo stated.

As public pressure mounts, it remains unclear when Speaker Alban Bagbin will address the issue.
