Foreign ministry declines to pay fines in China

Ghanaians detained in China are bracing up for a long stay in cells after they failed to pay fines imposed on them for overstaying their welcome. Even though the detainees have expressed their desire to come back home, the Chinese government has withheld their exit visas until they pay the fines. They claim to have little or no money to pay and were counting on the state, but Deputy foreign minister Charles Brempong Yeboah said government is not in the position to do so. In an interview with Joy news the Deputy Minister remarked; “If you break the law in Ghana who pays for the fine, is it the government?” According to him the ministry was rather assisting those who have lost their passports to secure travelling certificates and ensure that those ready to pay the fines were not unduly cheated by Chinese officials.
