For attempting to force her 15-year-old daughter into marriage, a 44-year old Nigerien woman has been arrested by the police.
The suspect, Amusu Kassim, a petty trader at Sowutuom in Accra, who has been detained by the police, is said to have arranged with her husband, now at large, to give out their daughter, a school dropout, into marriage to a man believed to be in his forties and already married with two wives.
Briefing the Times in Accra, Inspector Whoknows Attipoe, Station Officer of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU), said a couple of months ago, the man, identified only as Ibrahim, accompanied by his two wives approached the victim’s father Yaya Zachariah to declare his intentions to marry his daughter.
He said Ibrahim who lives in Tarkoradi paid to the girl’s parents the equivalent of GH¢500 in CFA currency, to enable them to prepare for the customary rites next month.
Inspector Attipoe said the girl refused the marriage and complained to some people in the neighbourhood about her ordeal.
He said a staff of a radio station had wind of the matter and alerted DQVVSU on Tuesday which led to the arrest of Madam Kassim and according to Inspector Attipoe, the suspect admitted in her caution statement, taking money and accepting Ibrahim’s request.
He said DOVVSU had provided shelter for the girl while the police had mounted a search for Zachariah and Ibrahim.
