The World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced that Ghana’s Food and Drug Authority (FDA) has attained the level three regulatory status.

The Country-Director, Dr Neema Kimambo presented the confirmation letter to the FDA through the Health Ministry.

She said this makes the FDA in Ghana one of only two countries in Africa and 52nd in the world to attain the level three status.

The Level three status is the second highest in the four-tiered WHO classification.

The Ghana FDA was established in August 1997 under the Food and Drugs Law, 1992 (PNDCL 305B) mandated by the law to regulate food, drugs, food supplements, herbal and homeopathic medicines, veterinary medicines, cosmetics, medical devices, household chemical substances, tobacco and tobacco products.

It also exists to protect public health and ensuring the safety, efficacy and security of human and veterinary drugs, food, biological products, cosmetics, medical devices, household chemical substances, tobacco and the conduct of clinical trials in the country.
