Fireboy DML’s latest album, Adademola, has quickly become one of my favourites since its release just over a week ago. From start to finish, the album is an immersive experience that showcases Fireboy's range as an artist and his ability to connect deeply with his audience through sincere storytelling and emotive melodies.
Iseoluwa: A powerful start
The album opens with "Iseoluwa," a song that immediately resonated with me for its heartfelt lyrics and hopeful message. It was a brilliant choice to kick off the album with this track—one that speaks to the undeserved favours and blessings we often receive without understanding why. Recorded during one of the lowest points in Fireboy’s life, "Iseoluwa" carries an emotional weight that feels both personal and universal.
As Fireboy explained, “The song is about hope. Sometimes we have to look around ourselves and realize that most of the success that we have is not something that we can put a handle on. We can’t even explain most of it. So, it’s just saying God’s design is mysterious to man. It’s me giving glory to God, and there’s no better way to open a personal album than with that message.” The track’s reflective nature sets a contemplative tone for the rest of the album, and it’s a song that I keep coming back to, finding new meaning with each listen.
Back and Forth: A masterful collaboration
One of the standout tracks on the album is "Back and Forth," featuring the legendary Lagbaja. This collaboration is nothing short of a masterpiece, blending contemporary Afrobeats with Lagbaja’s iconic saxophone sounds. The instrumentation is emotional and evocative, striking a chord every time I listen to it. The drums are crisp and precise, and the saxophone adds a timeless quality to the track, making it feel both fresh and classic.
The storyline of "Back and Forth" captures the complex emotions of unspoken love—the feelings we wrestle with, back and forth, in our hearts. Fireboy himself praised Lagbaja, saying, “Lagbaja is the most meticulous artist that I’ve worked with in my entire life. His work ethic is insane, and it explains exactly why he’s regarded as a legend. I learned a lot in the process of working with him on this record, and I am super honoured to have him on this record.” The synergy between Fireboy and Lagbaja is palpable, making this track a true highlight of the album.
Everyday: A display of vocal prowess
Another track that I can’t get enough of is "Everyday." Here, Fireboy showcases his vocal mastery with effortless ease. The song has a compelling rhythm and an infectious melody that makes it perfect for repeated listens. Fireboy’s ability to convey a range of emotions through his singing is on full display in this track, which adds to its appeal. The way he navigates the highs and lows of the song, using his voice as a versatile instrument, is nothing short of impressive.
A personal and evolving sound
What makes Adademola stand out as an album is Fireboy DML's ability to blend deeply personal themes with universal appeal. Throughout the album, he touches on various aspects of life—hope, love, reflection, and gratitude—creating a body of work that feels both intimate and expansive. His lyrics are thoughtful and often introspective, providing listeners with a window into his thoughts and feelings. At the same time, the album’s production is top-notch, featuring lush instrumentation, crisp percussion, and creative use of traditional and contemporary sounds.
A must-listen album
Overall, Adademola is an album that reflects Fireboy DML's growth and maturity as an artist. It is a rich weave of sounds and emotions that feels grounded in personal experience while also speaking to a broader audience. The collaborations, particularly with Lagbaja, add depth and variety to the album, while tracks like "Iseoluwa" and "Everyday" showcase Fireboy’s unique ability to blend storytelling with infectious melodies. For anyone who appreciates music with soul, depth, and creativity, Adademola is a must-listen.
