Ghana National Fire Service Officers Wives Association (FOWA) defeated Castle Ladies football team 2-1 in their International Women's Day Soccer match played at the Nicholson Sports Stadium at Burma Camp in Accra on Monday.
After the ceremonial kick-off by Ms Hawawu Boya Gariba, Deputy Minister for Women and Children's Affairs, it was the Castle Ladies who showed their determination to carry the day as they opened the scores in the 13th minute through Hajia Bella Murtala's long drive that went straight into the net.
FOWA accepted the challenge and matched their opponents boot for boot but could not find the net till the end of the first half.
Both teams resumed the second session with greater determination but it was FOWA whose efforts yielded dividend when Mabel Odoi put them on level terms in the 57th minute through a penalty.
Vivian Amo who played a good game, snatched the winning goal for the Fire Service Wives side six minutes to full time.
The match which formed part of activities marking the celebration of this year's International Women's Day, was instituted by the Ministry of Women and Children's Affairs.
Ms Boya Gariba said the aim of the event was to foster unity and also strengthen the already existing cordial relationship among various women's groups in the country.
She said it was also to fraternize with one another and share ideas to be better placed to contribute to national development.
Ms Boya Gariba expressed the hope that next year event would have many more women's groups participating in the event.
