Several wooden structures at Avenor in Accra were razed down by fire on Thursday morning, a day city authorities planned to demolish them.
Police suspected that the fire might have been caused by an arsonist but no arrest has been made.
Joy FM’s Yaw Ansu Gyeabour, reporting from the scene of the fire, said personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service were at hand to put the fire under control.
About 200 police personnel detailed to supervise the intended demolition exercise and officers from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, the demolition authority, including its Mayor, Dr Alfred Vanderpuije, had to suspend the exercise for a while to assist victims in salvaging their properties.
Police information says a man whom they spoke to prior to the fire outbreak is believed to have “deliberately set the place ablaze”.
The leader of the police team explained that immediately they left the man, they saw a fire coming from his structure.
The land in question belongs to the World Miracle Church International which has secured a court order to eject illegal occupants from the place.
