FIFA have admitted Luis Suarez could potentially miss the rest of the World Cup after his handball against Ghana.
The striker received a straight red for saving a goalbound-header on the line in extra-time, Asamoah Gyan missed the resulting penalty and Uruguay progressed to the semi-final after winning the shoot-out.
Suarez will serve an automatic one-match ban, ruling him out of the semi-final with Holland. FIFA's disciplinary committee will discuss whether his suspension should be extended further, which could jeopardise his involvement in either the final or the third-place play-off.
FIFA spokesman Pekka Odriozola said in a press conference: "For automatic red cards there is an automatic one-match suspension. The disciplinary committee also opens a case and they will be looking at that incident and taking a decision."
FIFA's disciplinary code gives the option of a longer ban on the grounds of unsportsmanlike conduct.
