Fifa threatens to ban Ghana over gov’t interference

Football's world governing body Fifa has warned that it will ban Ghana if it is proven that government is interfering in the administration of the sport in the country. The Switzerland-based body has written to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) demanding a report over recent manoeuvres by the country's new Minister of Sport. Under Fifa rules, national football associations must not be subject to government control. Despite this well-known Fifa regulation that has led to the banning of several countries, Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak recently met the top hierarchy of the GFA to demand the inclusion of government representatives on the committees. Alerted by the media reports of the demands from the minister, Fifa's presidential delegate for special affairs, Jerome Champagne has written to the GFA to demand a report on the development. The report will determine whether the GFA's independence is being threatened before the Swiss-based body takes action. A ban from international competition means the Black Stars will not be allowed to play in future World Cup qualifiers and will not play at the tournament to be hosted by South Africa in 2010. The Black Satellites will also be booted out of the U-20 World Cup to be held in Egypt later this year while Ghanaian clubs will not play continental matches. Strengthened by the message from Fifa, the executive committee of the GFA released a statement on Thursday warning the minister to stay away from the administration of the game. "We wish to remind the public that the power and authority to appoint, review, and dissolve its committees rests exclusively with the Ghana Football Association and for that matter no individual, group of individuals, or institution can purport to exercise such a right," the GFA said in a statement. "Membership of these committees has been based solely on merit and has no bearing whatsoever on an individual's gender, creed, political affiliation, or ethnicity. "As per the spirit of FIFA's Statutes and those of the GFA, footballing consideration has always guided the selection of members to offer their services as volunteers on these committees. "It is therefore erroneous for any individual or agency to purport to exercise such a right and we therefore urge the general public to disregard the news item and treat it with the contempt it deserves."
