Today it’s Cardi B, yesterday it was J-Lo.

Kamala Harris has been rolling out the celebrity endorsements in the final days of the campaign. At her rally in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the rapper and songwriter was one of the key speakers and performers before the vice-president took to the stage.

Cardi B’s a social media juggernaut with more than 250 million follows across her social media platforms. It’s unlikely her appearance will win over Maga-hatted Trump Republicans. But it will help energise Harris’s base, and potentially encourage some fans who might not have thought about voting to bother to.

What was noticeable was that Cardi B rehearsed many of Harris’s own talking points ahead of her taking to the stage.

Harris and Cardi B go deep on the economy in Wisconsin

Reading off her mobile phone, she laid into Donald Trump’s policies on abortion rights, saying: “No, no. I’m not taking any chances with my future…and [I’m] taking no chances with the future of my children”.

On the economy, the rapper said it needed “to get stronger” and added “that the cost of food and the cost of living is too high”.

Harris has recently begun putting the economy near the top of her speeches, and that was no different tonight.

“At the top of my list is bringing down the cost of living for you that will be my focus every single day,” Harris said.

The cost of living is a major issue in this election, as households balk at prices that have jumped nearly 20% over four years.

In the final days, she’s making a pitch that she understands ordinary Americans’ economic pain and has a plan to help. If America is listening, we’ll find out soon.

We heard a lot on Friday from both Kamala Harris and Donald Trump on what their plans are for the US economy.

Unsurprisingly, the economy – and especially costs of living – have been key concerns for American voters this election.

But how do their plans differ? Here is a quick breakdown on what each candidate is proposing:

Democratic nominee Harris:

 • Harris has stated that her day-one priority would be to reduce food and housing costs for working families. She has planned on doing so by banning gouge-pricing on groceries, helping first-time home buyers and increasing the minimum wage
 • She has vowed to raise taxes on big businesses and Americans making $400,000 (£305,000) a year, while raising the capital gains tax slightly to 28%. Harris has also promised to expand child tax credits for families and cut taxes for small businesses
 • On trade, Harris has indicated she will have a targeted approach on taxing imports – like the current Biden-Harris tariffs on Chinese imports like electric vehicles

Republican nominee Trump:

 • Trump has also tackled high costs of living, pledging to “end inflation and make America affordable again”. Among his plans are increasing oil drilling, which he says will lower energy costs.
 • He also promised to deport migrants, which he says will ease pressure on housing, and has vowed to remove taxes on tips and social security benefits for seniors
 • He has proposed tax cuts worth trillions, including an extension of a tax cut he enacted in 2017 that mostly helped the wealthy. Trump says these taxes will be paid by higher tariffs on imports – a plan that economists have warned will add to the US ballooning deficit and that would push up prices for consumers

It’s a lie, we are not printing excess ballots beyond agreed numbers – EC https://www.myjoyonline.com/its-a-lie-we-are-not-printing-excess-ballots-beyond-agreed-numbers-ec/ https://www.myjoyonline.com/its-a-lie-we-are-not-printing-excess-ballots-beyond-agreed-numbers-ec/#respond Sat, 02 Nov 2024 05:02:41 +0000 https://www.myjoyonline.com/?p=10032630449 The Electoral Commission has urged the public to discount any suggestion that it is clandestinely printing ballot papers in excess of agreed numbers. The Electoral Commission (EC) has urged the public to discount any suggestion that it is clandestinely printing ballot papers in excess of agreed numbers.

According to the EC, it is a lie for anyone to suggest, let alone claim that is what is happening.

Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairperson at the EC on Friday made the denial while on a media tour of printing houses engaged to print ballots for the 2024 general election.

He explained that per the ballot statistics shared with the political parties and candidates, the exact numbers of ballots going to any particular region or constituency are known, as the counting and sealing of such materials are done in the presence of agents of all the parties involved.

“This is the particular number going to this region, this is the particular number going to this constituency, so if you hear anywhere that the Electoral Commission has printed more than the necessary ballots, that’s a complete lie, because the parties are aware, they know the ballot statistics for each region, for each constituency, and in this year’s election what the Commission said is that we are giving each constituency an increase of two percent, and that’s what we are printing.

“So if you hear anywhere that oh the EC has printed excess of 2,000, 3,000 it’s not true. The parties are here and the party agents themselves can testify that indeed the numbers the EC has given to the parties, that’s what we are printing, that’s what the printing houses are printing, and that’s what EC officials are also checking, the parties are also checking.

It's a lie, we are not printing excess ballots beyond agreed numbers - EC

“And as I indicated, when we finish, all the ballots for each constituency, as far as each region is concerned will be bagged and the parties are going to have their seals on the bags, the EC is also going to have its seals on the bags. So everything is very, very transparent.”

The denial follows a claim by the agents’ supervisor of the National Democratic Congress, Richard Dzakpa, that the printing houses engaged to print for the Ashanti and Eastern regions, being the two strongholds of the ruling New Patriotic Party, as well as the Savannah and North East regions where the two leading presidential candidates- John Mahama and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia – come from, were printing 3,000 extra ballots per constituency, suggesting a sinister motive.

“It’s too much of a coincidence to have their two strongholds, and where the two flagbearers come from, printing in excess of 3,000 per constituency as internal printing house operational losses,” he alleged.

The Paramount Queenmother of Bechem Traditional Area in the Ahafo Region, Nana Adwoapo Dwamena Serwaa II, has appealed to her community and Ghanaians at large to prioritise Ghana’s progress and future generations by electing Vice President and NPP Presidential Candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, as the next President of Ghana.

Welcoming Dr Bawumia to Bechem on Friday as part of his Ahafo Region tour, Nana Adwoapo Dwamena Serwaa II remarked that the ultimate consideration in selecting the next President of Ghana should be the country’s future. She added that as Vice President, Dr Bawumia has shown himself to be visionary and committed to the nation’s well-being through his efforts.

“My fellow citizens, let us consider what is best for us as a country. Let us look to someone who has the nation at heart and who delivers on his promises,” said Nana Serwaa.

“I am pleading with everyone here in Bechem and across Ghana. Let us not look elsewhere because this is about Ghana and the next generation. Dr Bawumia has done well; let us give him the opportunity to continue as our next President,” she urged.

Let us consider the future of Ghana and vote for visionary Bawumia - Queenmother of Bechem

The Bechem Paramount Queenmother highlighted Ghana’s progress in many areas and stressed the need to elect Dr Bawumia, who she praised for spearheading numerous national innovations, to ensure continuity and progress.

“If we make the right decision now, it will greatly benefit our country. We are on a good path with so many innovations; let us not reverse it. We should give Dr Mahamudu Bawumia the chance to continue the good work he has started.”

“To the people of Ghana, Bechem, and Ahafo, I urge everyone to support Bawumia and vote for him on December 7.”

Acknowledging the traditional stance of neutrality in politics, Nana Serwaa noted, “They say traditional rulers should not involve themselves in politics, but we cannot ignore what we have seen with our own eyes. We have been sharing the good we see, and we will continue to do so.”

In her appeal for support, Nana Serwaa also offered prayers for Dr Bawumia, expressing confidence that he will be sworn in as Ghana’s next President in January 2025.

“My son, don’t worry. Remain resolute and bold, for victory awaits you. By the grace of God, you’ll be sworn in as President a month after December. By the grace of God, it will come to pass.”

The Savanna Agricultural Research Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR-SARI) has introduced farmers in Manwe and Goripie in the Wa East District to stress-tolerant and hybrid maize varieties.

This introduction took place during a farmers’ field day organised by CSIR-SARI in Manwe, where the farmers were acquainted with the benefits of these improved maize varieties. The demonstration fields showcased climate-resilient maize hybrids as part of the “Participatory On-Farm Testing of Stress-Tolerant Maize in the Upper West Region of Ghana” project, funded by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA).

Addressing the farmers, Dr Mahama G. Yakubu, a Senior Research Scientist at CSIR-SARI, Wa station, noted that these demonstration fields were designed to facilitate the testing, promotion, and eventual adoption of the maize varieties by farmers. He emphasised the importance of adopting climate-smart maize varieties and hybrids to improve economic gains.

“Due to climate change, it is crucial to develop climate-smart hybrids. Climate-smart means the variety matures early, is stress-tolerant, high-yielding, and also meets consumer preferences to enhance livelihoods,” Dr Yakubu explained.

He added that the hybrids possess built-in tolerance mechanisms for water shortage, allowing them to produce more than traditional maize varieties during drought conditions. Additionally, several of these improved varieties have shorter maturity periods, which are better suited to the increasingly erratic rainfall in northern Ghana.

“With a stress-tolerant maize genotype, farmers are more likely to achieve food security, allocate less land to maize, and invest in other crops, promoting a more balanced diet, higher incomes, and improved soil fertility,” he stated.

However, Dr Yakubu, who is also an agronomist, advised that the yield potential of the hybrid maize varieties could only be realised if farmers adhered to good agronomic practices (GAPs), such as proper land preparation and timely weeding. Other essential GAPs he mentioned included the “4Rs” of nutrient stewardship (right source, right rate, right time, and right place), pest control, and timely harvesting.

Some farmers, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) during the field visit, expressed optimism that the improved maize varieties would help them address the challenges posed by irregular rainfall patterns.

The Vision for Accelerated Sustainable Development-Ghana, in collaboration with the Ghana NCD Alliance and the Stroke Association Support Network, commemorated this year’s World Stroke Day.

The 2024 observance, themed “Stroke: Know the Risks, Act Fast,” highlighted the urgent need for education, prevention, and timely intervention to minimise stroke-related risks, particularly in Ghana.

In a joint statement, Mr Labram M. Musah, Executive Director of Vision for Accelerated Sustainable Development-Ghana and National Coordinator of the Ghana NCD Alliance, urged the Ghanaian government, healthcare providers, and civil society to take decisive action on stroke prevention and management.

“As we observe World Stroke Day 2024, let us commit as a nation to raise awareness, improve healthcare access, and promote healthy lifestyles to combat the growing prevalence of strokes in Ghana,” the statement read. “Together, we can foster a society where individuals are informed and equipped to recognise strokes early and take preventive measures through healthy living.”

The statement noted that stroke has emerged as a significant health crisis in Ghana, contributing heavily to the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). “Recent studies show that stroke accounts for approximately 15 per cent of hospital admissions and 16 per cent of deaths annually in Ghana, with a rise in incidents among younger adults due to increasing risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, unhealthy lifestyle choices—including tobacco and alcohol use—and urbanisation.”

The statement further observed that many Ghanaians remain unaware of key risk factors and early warning signs of stroke. Educating the public to recognise symptoms like sudden numbness or weakness, confusion, difficulty speaking, and severe headaches is crucial for ensuring timely treatment.

It highlighted that access to quality healthcare services, particularly emergency care in rural areas, is hindered by transportation challenges, inadequate facilities, and a shortage of healthcare professionals, which worsens the issue. “It is also important to note that risk factors such as high blood pressure, obesity, smoking, and physical inactivity exacerbate stroke prevalence. Public health initiatives that promote healthier lifestyles and routine health screenings are essential for prevention,” the statement added.

The statement also called on the public to avoid stigmatising stroke, as this can discourage individuals from seeking prompt medical attention, stressing that stroke is a serious medical emergency.

The statement advocated for establishing comprehensive rehabilitation programmes focusing on physical, occupational, and speech therapy to support stroke survivors.

Mr Ad Adams Ebenezer, Executive Director of the Stroke Association Support Network, underscored the need for government action to make rehabilitation accessible and affordable for stroke survivors to reduce out-of-pocket expenses when seeking care.

The Executive Director of Paradigm Initiative, a pan-African organisation, Mr. Gbenga Sesan has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to provide timely information to the public before, during, and after the December 7 election.

He says this approach would help reduce the spread of misinformation and disinformation, fostering public trust in the electoral process.

Mr. Sesan made this suggestion at a news conference in Accra on Thursday. The event was organised to share the outcomes of a multi-stakeholder engagement held by Paradigm Initiative, aimed at ensuring that digital rights are respected before, during, and after the December 7 election.

The engagement was conducted in collaboration with Community Focus Foundation Ghana (CFF-Ghana), the E-Governance and Internet Governance Foundation for Africa (EGIGFA), and the Internet Society Ghana Chapter (ISOC Ghana). It was attended by representatives from various political parties, including the New Patriotic Party, the National Democratic Congress, and the People’s National Convention, as well as government officials, academics, civil society organizations, and tech entities.

Mr. Sesan rejected calls to regulate the internet, particularly social media, during election periods to address the issue of information disorder. In October last year, the EC proposed a framework to regulate social media use during elections, aiming to reduce the spread of misinformation, protect the integrity of the electoral process, and safeguard democracy, peace, and security.

However, Mr. Sesan argued that such measures could be dangerous and might lead to increased speculation and uncertainty.

“What we have learned over the last few years is that electoral commissions are often responsible for the spread of fake news due to delays in releasing information,” he stated. “When you want fake news to die, release real news in advance. Carry citizens along during the process. Information gaps and asymmetries lead to assumptions and guesses.”

Mr. Sesan encouraged the EC to establish strong relationships with political parties and other stakeholders, sharing timely information with them to build trust in the process. He also advised the government to avoid media control and instead establish standards to promote responsible reporting.

The president of the Internet Society, Mr. Francis Acquah Amaning urged the National Communications Authority to ensure strong internet access during and after the polls for timely information delivery.

He also appealed to Ghanaians to respect the rights of their fellow citizens online and avoid spreading false information to protect the integrity of the electoral process.

Mr. Amaning called on the media to adhere to professional ethics, exercising caution in their reporting to safeguard democracy, peace, and security.

A communiqué issued at the end of the multi-stakeholder engagement emphasised the importance of protecting citizens’ digital rights ahead of the elections to ensure transparency.

Regional Lead for Anglophone Africa at Paradigm Initiative, Ms. Khadijah El-Usman who read the communiqué, identified misinformation, disinformation, hate speech, and internet restrictions as significant factors that could undermine public trust, influence voter behaviour, and compromise the electoral process.

The communiqué said that protecting digital rights is essential for “enabling informed decision-making and maintaining the credibility of elections.” It called for empowering citizens on electoral processes and their digital rights.

Additionally, it recommended establishing a structured code of conduct for media operations during election periods to promote responsible journalism.

The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has issued a strong statement rejecting accusations of corruption and sabotage made by anonymous sources against its officials.

Labelling the claims as “false and mischievous,” the GMA maintains that its processes remain transparent and fair.

The allegations, which surfaced on an obscure online platform, assert that the Authority has unjustly revoked the licenses of some Seafarer Recruitment and Placement Services (SRPS) providers and prioritized foreign partners over local ones.

The GMA, however, insists these claims are without basis.

According to the GMA, its mandate to regulate, monitor, and coordinate activities within the maritime industry is carried out strictly in line with the Ghana Maritime Authority Act, 2002 (Act 630) and the Ghana Shipping Act, 2003 (Act 645).

The Authority emphasized that its licensing system for SRPS operators follows an annual review process that thoroughly evaluates compliance with regulatory and operational standards.

In a firm response, the GMA stated, “The Authority does not take action against any SRPS without justification.

All decisions made by the Authority are based on thorough investigations and are in strict accordance with established regulations and international standards.”

The GMA went on to highlight its commitment to both local and international SRPS providers, refuting any notion of bias.

“The Authority emphasises that it does not show favouritism or discriminate against any local or foreign entities,” the GMA said.

It added that its policies are structured to ensure a level playing field, allowing both local and international operators to thrive.

This commitment to transparency, the Authority noted, aligns with international standards, including the International Labour Organisation’s Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC 2006), which Ghana has adopted locally.

Ghana Maritime Authority denounces allegations of license sabotage as 'false and mischievous'

The GMA is also a signatory to ILO Convention 188, which addresses work conditions for fishers. The Authority expressed its firm resolve to uphold these global standards, explaining that non-compliant SRPS providers may face sanctions following thorough investigations.

The GMA also called on the public, particularly seafarers and fishers, to report any instances of exploitation, such as unauthorised recruitment fees or deductions from wages as placement costs, which are considered forms of forced labour or human trafficking.

“The GMA is committed to taking decisive action against any individuals or organizations involved in these illegal practices to protect the rights and welfare of all maritime personnel,” the statement read.

Encouraging the public to seek reliable information sources, the GMA warned against spreading unverified claims and reiterated its mission to sustain a safe, efficient, and transparent maritime sector in Ghana.

“We will continue to engage all stakeholders to address concerns and ensure that our actions are transparent, lawful, and fair,” the Authority concluded, reaffirming its dedication to the welfare and development of Ghana’s maritime sector.

The Agricultural Development Bank PLC (ADB) has announced the temporary closure of its branch in Bawku, citing escalating security concerns in the area.

In a recent press release, ADB confirmed that the branch would remain closed until the security situation improves, stating that this step was taken with the safety of staff and customers in mind.

ADB has maintained a presence in Bawku as the sole operational bank in the region for over a year. Other commercial banks previously withdrew their operations from Bawku, also due to the volatile security conditions.

By closing temporarily, ADB joins the ranks of other financial institutions prioritizing staff safety amidst the ongoing tension in the area.

The bank assured customers that its commitment to serving the people of Bawku and surrounding communities remains strong, promising a return to regular branch operations as soon as stability is restored.

In the meantime, ADB encourages customers to use its electronic banking platforms, which will remain fully accessible to facilitate transactions and maintain essential banking services.

“We remain dedicated to providing universal banking services across the country,” the statement reads, underscoring ADB’s broader mission to deliver essential financial services even in challenging conditions.

Following a recent High Court decision reversing the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) revocation of CDH Savings and Loans’ license, a BoG source has confirmed that the Bank plans to appeal.

The High Court, led by His Lordship Justice Nana Brew, ruled that the BoG’s final directive for CDH to liquidate assets to address solvency and liquidity issues was “unreasonable and unfair.”

The ruling did not address the repeated notices BoG sent to CDH Savings and Loans to rectify its Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR), which had persistently fallen below the minimum requirement.

According to sources, CDH Savings and Loans did not act on these notices, despite facing significant liquidity challenges that posed broader systemic risks.

The BoG’s final two-week notice for asset liquidation was, reportedly, one of several measures extended to CDH Savings and Loans before its license was revoked.

Citing Act 930, the BoG maintains that the license revocation process was “regularly and lawfully done” to protect financial stability and denies that its actions were either “unfair or unreasonable.”

In light of this, BoG plans to file an appeal in the Court of Appeal to contest the High Court’s ruling, noting that previous license revocations as part of the banking sector cleanup have been upheld by both the High Court and Supreme Court.

Social media has been restricted in Mozambique as one of the main challengers in last month’s disputed election remains in hiding calling for protests.

Police say they believe Venâncio Mondlane – a part-time pastor and independent candidate who insists he was the true winner of the polls – is in neighbouring South Africa.

He has been imploring his supporters in social media videos to demonstrate over the next week against the official poll results, which gave victory to Daniel Chapo from the ruling Frelimo party.

Mondlane disappeared from public view 12 days ago, accusing the police of threatening behaviour not long after two of his aides were shot dead in the run-up to the release of the results.

He has described the killing of his lawyer Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe, an official from the opposition Podemos party that backed him, as politically motivated – an allegation denied by the government.

Mondlane went into hiding before the results were released, saying officers had encircled his home and he had been tear-gassed at protests called after the murders.

Demonstrations also erupted after the results were announced on Thursday last week.

At least 10 people are known to have been shot dead by security forces during post-election protests, according to a report from Order of Doctors, an independent medics’ association, while dozens suffered non-fatal gunshot wounds.

Police chief Bernardino Rafael has denied Mondlane’s accusations and said his officers had been called to intervene in 58 protests, “of which 38 were violent, very violent”.

Internet watchdog NetBlocks said restrictions to WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram began on Thursday, while there had been disruption to mobile data soon after election day on 9 October.

For the past day WhatsApp, for example, gets cut off for hours at a time – and although a connection can be made intermittently, making calls on the app has not been possible for the whole of Friday.

The government has not commented on claims it has deliberately stifled access to the internet to hamper protesters’ ability to co-ordinate.

President-elect Chapo will be taking over from Filipe Nyusi, who is stepping down after serving the two-term limit.

Mozambique has only ever been governed by one party – Frelimo – which has ruled since independence from Portugal.

Not as many protesters turned out this Thursday and Friday compared to the demonstrations held last week

The official election results gave Chapo 71% of the vote. Mondlane was runner-up with 20%, and Ossufo Momade, of former rebel group Renamo, came third with 6%.

But that result is being challenged at the Constitutional Court by Podemos.

International election observers have also said the elections were flawed, pointing to doctored numbers and other irregularities during the counting process.

The electoral commission has now been ordered by the Constitutional Court to hand over all the records and tally sheets.

On Thursday, Podemos leader Albino Forquilha met the police chief for talks, calling for “institutions that administer justice” to “carry out work that honours the vote the Mozambican people entrusted to political parties”.

As of Friday, relative calm has returned to the streets of the capital, Maputo, and other cities after days of demonstrations.

Some markets, shops and companies that were forced to close their doors have now reopened, but complain of having very few customers.

The impact on business has been “worse than Covid-19”, said the president of the National Trade Association CTA, coming “at a time when the country is struggling with the issue of unemployment, mostly affecting the youth”.

Mozambicans have largely opted to stay home instead of going to work as normal, because of safety fears and scarce public transport.

Beyond the capital, schools are still running but with fewer pupils attending class.

Mondlane is now urging Mozambican industry to back what he calls a week-long “paralysis”, saying on Facebook Live that “seven days without work are better than five years of misery”.

He has also called on his supporters to “occupy” the presidential palace and other strategic points in the capital city.

Dozens of alleged protesters were brought before a Nigerian court on Friday, sparking outrage as many of the defendants appeared to be malnourished following two months of detention.

Four young suspects – who were arrested during major anti-government protests in August – collapsed on the courtroom floor, writhing in pain before being removed to get medical help.

Human rights activists have criticised the justice system as at least one-third of those brought in for the initial court hearing were boys aged between 14 and 18.

All 76 defendants pleaded not guilty to charges of treason, felony and inciting mutiny.

Activists said the defendants had been in custody since August, when protests over a deepening cost-of-living crisis ignited across Nigeria.

The demonstrations turned violent in some places as protesters clashed with security forces. At least seven people died, according to police, though rights groups have put the death toll at 23.

There were also nearly 700 arrests.

In response to Friday’s dramatic court hearing, which took place in the capital, Abuja, rights group Amnesty International said: “Putting minors through these horrifying detentions for participating in protests against hunger and corruption is – so far – one of the deadliest attempts to suppress freedom of assembly.”

A Nigerian rights organisation, named Enough is Enough, called the situation “institutional child abuse”.

“These teenagers have been remanded in prison for saying they were hungry. Their place is in school, not prison. Release them now,” the organisation demanded.

Some of those who appeared in court on Friday were charged with flying Russian flags during the protests.

Video footage of the demonstrations showed a small number of protesters waving Russian flags and calling on Russia’s President Vladimir Putin for help.

Two months ago, 10 other suspects appeared in court, charged with treason and other serious offences.

They were accused of working with a British citizen “to destabilise Nigeria by calling on the military to take over government from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu”, according to the charge sheet.

All of the suspects in this case pleaded not guilty.

In total, 114 of those arrested during the protests were charged with treason. A judge has granted each of the defendants a 10m naira ($6,000; £4,700) bail.

Nigeria is experiencing its worst economic crisis in a generation – annual inflation stands at more than 30% and food prices have rocketed.

A Russian court has fined Google two undecillion roubles – a two followed by 36 zeroes – for restricting Russian state media channels on YouTube.

In dollar terms that means the tech giant has been told to pay $20,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.

Despite being one of the world’s wealthiest companies, that is considerably more than the $2 trillion Google is worth.

In fact, it is far greater than the world’s total GDP, which is estimated by the International Monetary Fund to be $110 trillion.

The fine has reached such a gargantuan level because – as state news agency Tass has highlighted – it is rapidly increasing all the time.

According to Tass, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov admitted he “cannot even pronounce this number” but urged “Google management to pay attention.”

The company has not commented publicly or responded to a BBC request for a statement.

A fine mess

Russia media outlet RBC reports the fine on Google relates to the restriction of content of 17 Russian media channels on YouTube.

While this started in 2020, it escalated after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine two years later.

That saw most Western companies pull out of Russia, with doing business there also tightly restricted by sanctions.

Russian media outlets were also banned in Europe – prompting retaliatory measures from Moscow.

In 2022, Google’s local subsidiary was declared bankrupt and the company has stopped offering its commercial services in Russia, such as advertising.

However, its products are not completely banned in the country.

This development is the latest escalation between Russia and the US tech giant.

In May, 2021, Russia’s media regulator Roskomnadzor accused Google of restricting YouTube access to Russian media outlets, including RT and Sputnik, and supporting “illegal protest activity”.

Then, in July, 2022, Russia fined Google 21.1bn rouble (£301m) for failing to restrict access to what it called “prohibited” material about the war in Ukraine and other content.

There is virtually no press freedom in Russia, with independent news outlets and freedom of expression severely curtailed.

Confident and well-mannered, Botswana’s new President Duma Boko carries the traits of a highly trained human rights lawyer.

The 54-year-old’s thoughtful, fluent sentences speak of his legal education first in Botswana and then at Harvard Law School in the US.

And despite being humble in victory, the fact that he won the presidency at the third time of asking reveals a single-minded ambition.

For more than 50 years opposition politicians have dreamt of unseating the mighty Botswana Democratic Party, but only Boko has made that a reality.

The crushing manner of the victory of his Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) party came as a surprise, including it seems to Boko himself, who admitted being shocked by the numbers.

But, dressed in his signature dark blue suit, he did not gloat or celebrate wildly in his first comments to the media on Friday when the scale of his win became clear,.

“I can only pledge to [the people] that I will do my very best. Where I fail and fault, I will look to them for guidance,” he said.

Boko, captivated the nation going through difficult economic times with his promises of change, employment and government stipends.

“People fell in love with him and this is the result,” journalist Innocent Selatlhwa told the BBC’s Focus on Africa podcast.

Throughout his campaign, at rallies Boko would ask supporters to come closer and listen to their grievances in a way that made him appealing to young people, the journalist added. Boko was serious, but always engaging and friendly.

He also ruled out running as a member of parliament and put all his efforts into becoming president – a bold move, according to Selatlhwa.

Born in 1969, in the country’s Central District, in the small town of Mahalapye, Boko always had a sense of respect, according to relatives.

“He was so fixated with doing the right thing. His sense of justice ran deep,” his aunt told a local newspaper.

During his time in school, he was elected president of the student council.

In his legal career, he emerged as one of the country’s top lawyers, according to political analyst Lesole Machacha.

Getty Images Multiple supporters of the UDC party stand at a rally donning white and blue.
UDC supporters want the party to address unemployment and other issues in the country

Passionate about knowledge and education, Boko always has a strong grasp on current affairs and issues in Botswana, Mr Machacha told the BBC.

“He is serious about fixing the country,” he added.

He became the leader of the Botswana National Front (BNF) in 2010, which used to have more “communist ideals”, said Mr Machaha, but the party has since tacked towards the centre.

But frustrated by the years of opposition defeat, Boko pioneered the creation of an alliance of the parties opposed to the government and the UDC was born.

He came under fire in over a decade ago when he described the academic staff at the University of Botswana as “useless”, despite being a former lecturer.

Many people took this as a dig at the country’s education system.

When he was confronted about this by a journalist on the South African news channel eNCA he said: “The truth hurts.”

Earlier this month, his wife Kaone Boko told the Mmegi newspaper that her husband was principled to the point of stubbornness.

“He does not back down from a fight; no matter how big the enemy is,” she said.

A clue perhaps to how he managed to stay the course and see off one of Africa’s most successful political parties.

At least 14 people have been killed after a concrete canopy at a railway station in northern Serbia collapsed, the country’s President Aleksandar Vučić said.

A young girl aged six or seven was among the dead, he added.

People were sitting on benches under the outdoor overhang at the station in Novi Sad, Serbia’s second city, at the time of the collapse around noon local time (11:00 GMT), Radio Television of Serbia (RTS) reported.

Three people are in hospital. Among them are two women who were pulled alive from under the rubble a few hours after the collapse.

In an address to the nation, Mr Vučić said he hoped the number of dead would not rise beyond 14, adding that five of those killed had still not been identified.

“Those responsible, I assure you, will be punished,” he said, quoted by AFP.

Around 80 rescuers from all over the country are involved in the search, using heavy machinery, which is still ongoing.

The railway station building was renovated in 2021, and renovated again this year in order to be officially opened on 5 July.

Serbian media quoted Railway Infrastructure of Serbia, the body responsible for the concrete canopy, as saying it had not been reconstructed with the station. It was built in 1964.

Prime Minister Miloš Vučević said Friday was one of the most difficult days in Novi Sad’s post-war history.

“This is a great, terrible tragedy for Novi Sad and for all of Serbia,” he added, sending condolences to the families of the victims and thanking first responders.

The government declared Saturday as an official day of mourning.

Accra Hearts of Oak performed gutsy to beat Medeama S.C. by two goals to nil at the newly constructed T & A Park in the Ghana Premier League.

Make-shift right-back Emmanuel Amankwaah and new-signing Mawuli Wayo scored the decisive goals for the Phobians on Friday night.

Hearts coach Aboubakar Ouattara made two changes to last Sunday’s team. Ahmed Ramzy was replaced by Salim Adams in central midfield, while Yaw Baafi Amankwaah, who deputized at right-back last time out, was replaced by Emmanuel Amankwaah.

Amankwaah was pushed to back to make way for the returning Ransford Mensah.

Outtara’s opponent, Nebojsa Kapoor, retained the same starting line-up from the 2-2 draw with Aduana Stars.

#GPL 2024/25: Hearts silence Medeama in Tarkwa with two second half goals

Medeama’s line for the match:

Apart from a Theophilus Collinson header which was smartly turned over the bar after eleven minutes, there was not much to discuss in the opening half hour. The trend continued until half-time.

Back from recess, Medeama took the game to the visitors, attacking down the left side.
Tried as they did, Hearts kept Abdul Fatawu Sulemana and Kofi Babil in check through a mix of sheer grit and determination.

Ten minutes after the restart, however, Sulemana managed to find his target inside the penalty area, but Collinson quickly closed down David Boison before he could cause any problems.

Five minutes later, Diawusie Taylor combined with Babil to isolate Collinson, but the striker failed to pull the trigger before Kelvin Osei-Asibey intervened.

Hearts had their moments too but Saani Mohammed, on two occasions, and Hussein Mohammed, both failed with their final deliveries.

Five minutes after the hour mark, Hearts took the lead when Hamza Issa slid in behind Nurudeen Abdulai to slip the ball past Appiah Kubi. His goal-bound shot was poked him by Kwabena Boateng for the opener.

The goal lifted the noise levels in the spanking new stadium, as thousands of Hearts fans chanted the famous Hearts anthem in response to Hamza’s industry.

With an advantage to protect, Hearts retreated into a low block and closed down the channels to deny Medeama hope of restoration.

Led by the human wall that is Osei-Asibey, Hearts repelled everything Medeama threw at them.

Mawuli Wayo has endured a frustrating start to life as a Hearts of Oak player. But all that was forgotten when he, like Hamza for the first goal, slipped between the center backs to pounce on a long ball from Benjamin Asare, before heading it past Appiah Kubi.

Again, just like the Phobian’s first goal, even though his effort was goal-bound, Wayo chased the ball to head it into the net, to erase all doubts.

If the decibel levels were loud for the first goal, this time, it lifted the roof of the stadium, as Hearts fans cheered in delight.

When the noise settled, Medeama had eight minutes to save face but could not make much of it.

Friday night’s win takes Hearts of Oak to seventh position on the log, with 12 points, from nine matches.

The result also leaves Medeama in third place with 15 points, ahead of the weekend’s fixtures.

Finance Ministry directs $30m payment to Sunon Asogli amid fears of power crisis https://www.myjoyonline.com/finance-ministry-directs-30m-payment-to-sunon-asogli-amid-fears-of-power-crisis/ https://www.myjoyonline.com/finance-ministry-directs-30m-payment-to-sunon-asogli-amid-fears-of-power-crisis/#respond Fri, 01 Nov 2024 20:35:03 +0000 https://www.myjoyonline.com/?p=10032630209 JoyNews is learning, that the Ministry of Finance has directed the Controller and Accountant General to disburse $30 million to Independent Power Producer, Sunon Asogli under a new agreement to address the debt that caused the power plant shutdown. ]]>

JoyNews is learning, that the Ministry of Finance has directed the Controller and Accountant General to disburse $30 million to Independent Power Producer, Sunon Asogli under a new agreement to address the debt that caused the power plant shutdown.

The plant, a critical 560-megawatt power facility, halted operations due to the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) outstanding $259 million debt.

The shutdown raises concerns about a potential return to ‘dumsor’ with serious economic impacts on the country.

Speaking to JoyNews, the spokesperson for Sunon Asogli, Elikplim Apertogbor said that negotiation has been slow.

“Since we shutdown, we’ve been having some verbal engagement and he [Finance Minister] maintained the position that until this thing is done, he’s not willing to talk to us. So he’s not willing to attend to us. That has been his posture,” he said.

When asked what it would take to resume operations, Mr Apertogbor noted, “We have mentioned our challenge. He has countless times to make a payment to Sunon Asogli but has not hourned those obligations or those promises. He’s saying that somebody is acting in bad faith. But his is worse than that.”

But the Executive Director of the Africa Center for Energy Policy, Ben Boakye, confirmed that the Controller and Accountant General has made the $30 million payment to Sunon Asogli.

“These kind of shutdowns, it will keep coming up because the situation is not good, it’s really terrible but we are also saved by certain kind of dynamics because the companies always will prefer you owing them than shutting down and not making money so that compells them to keep generating as long as there is fuel, there is gas to do that,” he said.

He stated that when Sunon Asogli shut down, the government had to quickly authorise a $30 million payment.

“I don’t know whether it actually hit their account but they had to instruct the accountant general to process payment of $30 million. That $30 million could have built schools, hospitals, save some dying members of our society for them to continue to produce an economic value and contribute to society but we are having to sacrifice this hard government money into this useless expenditures where power is supposed to be business, sell power, make money and pay everybody along the chain but politics doesn’t allow us to treat power sector as business and we keep accumulating this debt.”

Mr Boakye also attributed ECG’s revenue collection issues to a lack of competent leadership.

He asserted that credible leadership with the capacity and will to tackle these issues is essential for a long-term solution.

“That’s what we have been lacking. We always talk about investment, we need investment. But even when you put in the investment, the situation worsens. So it tells you that the problem is more of leadership and the commitment to deal with the problem than actually money,” he added.

Emergency teams in Spain are continuing their efforts to locate dozens of people still missing in what is the worst flooding disaster in generations.

More than 200 people are known to have died, with most fatalities happening in the Valencia region, but the death toll is expected to rise.

The floods destroyed bridges and covered towns with mud – leaving cut-off communities without water, food or electricity.

Some residents say more lives could have been saved if the local authorities had been quicker to warn of the flood risk.

Among them is Juan González, who lives in the town of Aldaia in Valencia. He told the BBC that the loss there was devastating.

“This is an area prone to flash flooding. It’s outrageous that our local government didn’t do anything about it, knowing that this was coming, and they did nothing about it,” he said.

Another local, Augustin, said the flat where he lived with his wife and children had been completely flooded and they have had to move in with his parents.

The civil protection agency, overseen by the regional government, issued an emergency alert to the phones of people in and around the city of Valencia after 20:00 local time (19:00 GMT) on Tuesday, by which time the flood water was swiftly rising in many areas and in some cases already wreaking havoc.

Questions remain about the timing of the alert and whether Spain has an adequate warning system for natural disasters.

Mireia, who lives close to some of the devastation in Valencia, said that people were “not prepared at all”.

“Many people were inside their cars, they couldn’t make it out,” she said. “They were just drowned by the water.”

Thousands of volunteers are currently helping the Spanish military and emergency services with the rescue and clean-up operation, and Valencia’s regional president, Carlos Mazon, said more troops would be deployed.

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez took to social media to express his thanks to volunteers, calling them an “example of solidarity and the limitless dedication of Spanish society”.

He has vowed that his government will do whatever it takes to help those affected by the disaster.

In the devastated town of Paiporta, where more than 60 deaths have so far been reported, residents have expressed their frustration that aid is coming in too slowly.

“There aren’t enough firefighters, the shovels haven’t arrived,” Paco Clemente, a 33-year-old pharmacist, told the AFP news agency as he helped clear mud from a friend’s house.

Dozens of people have been arrested for looting, with one Aldaia resident telling AFP he saw thieves grabbing items from an abandoned supermarket as “people are a bit desperate”.

Meanwhile, the Spanish authorities have extended a red alert for torrential rain on the southern coast.

It includes the Huelva region, which has already been badly hit by downpours. The city of Cartaya saw around two months’ worth of rain in just 10 hours.

There are warnings of further heavy downfalls into Saturday.

One of the contributing factors to the disaster was a lack of rainfall throughout the rest of the year, which left the ground in many areas of eastern and southern Spain unable to absorb rainwater efficiently.

The warming climate is also likely to have contributed to the severity of the floods.

In a preliminary report, World Weather Attribution (WWA), a group of international scientists who investigate global warming’s role in extreme weather, found that the rainfall which struck Spain was 12% heavier due to climate change and that the weather event experienced was twice as likely.

Ghana records a daily electricity shortfall of approximately 700 megawatts (MW), sometimes reaching up to 1,000 MW.

According to the Institute for Energy Security (IES), this gap which occurs 100% of the time in the dataset, points to structural issues in scaling up or resource availability for power generation.

Due to this sustained shortfall, Ghana faces challenges in meeting domestic demand reliably and fulfilling export commitments, impacting revenue from energy exports.

The IES explained that the generation system shows moderate daily fluctuations, indicating limited flexibility to adapt to demand changes, which restricts the capacity to meet peak demand.

To prioritise domestic needs, the energy think tank said Ghana often reduces export volumes and imports at some point, affecting trade relations and income from exports to neighbouring countries.

The analysis, it pointed out underscores the importance of enhancing the utilisation of existing dependable capacity, expanding generation capacity to meet medium-term needs, and adopting flexible operational policies to enhance electricity supply reliability and support Ghana’s role as a regional energy exporter.

Recommendations

To address these teething issues, it recommended Ghana consider expanding generation capacity through investments in new facilities, upgrades to existing ones, and enhanced utilisation of existing dependable capacity to help bridge the demand-supply gap.

Similarly, it wants the country to implement policies to optimise and manage peak demand more effectively, such as through demand response programmes to help balance consumption with available resources.

To sustain export commitments, it urged the nation to equally explore bilateral agreements with neighbouring countries that account for supply constraints, ensuring reliability while accommodating domestic needs.

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology is hosting the 2024 Kosmos Innovation Center Agritech Challenge Classic Zonal Pitch.

The KIC Agritech Challenge aims to foster innovation in agriculture among students and aspiring entrepreneurs. The competition encourages participants to develop creative solutions to pressing agricultural challenges, ultimately leading to the establishment of viable businesses.

The 2024 Zonal Pitch will feature ninety-three teams from five different institutions: Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED), Kwadaso Agricultural College (KAC), and Ejura Agricultural College and Mechanization Center (EACMC).

Professor James Osei Mensah, Faculty Advisor of the Kosmos Innovation Center (KIC) Agritech Challenge at KNUST, believes the challenge will inspire the creation of businesses.

“At the end of this day, we expect that there will be thriving business ideas that aim at solving agricultural problems, and by solving these problems, they create businesses, employ themselves, and employ others,” he said.

Prof. Osei Mensah added, “The Agritech Challenge is solving agric problems on any aspect of the value chain, from the input stage until the product gets to the consumer. We have some participants who are using agricultural waste to produce feeds and sanitary pads; others are into processing, converting raw forms of perishable commodities; and others provide technological solutions by creating platforms for transactions. The ideas are diverse, but all must be related to agriculture.”

The Program Manager of Kosmos Innovation Center, Mrs. Terence Tienaah, mentioned that by prioritizing innovation and technology, farmers can adapt to challenges posed by climate change and build capacity among the youth.

“The program does not only seek to identify ideas but also to build the capacity of young people to consider agriculture as a profession and explore vocations within the agric value chain while nurturing sustainable businesses.”

“Working with young people has brought innovation and technology, and is also helping farmers to adapt and develop resilient ways to cope with climate change, which is now the new normal in the space,” she said.

The KIC Agritech Challenge is a partnership between the Kosmos Innovation Center (KNUST), sixteen tertiary institutions, with funding from the Mastercard Foundation.

Significant and consistent energy shortfalls in meeting daily peak demand impact power stability – IES https://www.myjoyonline.com/significant-and-consistent-energy-shortfalls-in-meeting-daily-peak-demand-impact-power-stability-ies/ https://www.myjoyonline.com/significant-and-consistent-energy-shortfalls-in-meeting-daily-peak-demand-impact-power-stability-ies/#respond Fri, 01 Nov 2024 19:14:44 +0000 https://www.myjoyonline.com/?p=10032630320 Such shortfalls, it explained, meant that Ghana faces daily challenges in fulfilling its total energy requirements, which has led to practices such as load shedding or the prioritisation of essential services over broader access.]]>

An analysis of Ghana’s power generation data from September 1, 2024, to October 27, 2024, by the Institute for Energy Security (IES) revealed significant and consistent shortfalls in meeting daily system peak demand.

This impacted domestic energy stability and electricity export potential to neighbouring countries, forcing power imports from Cote d’Ivoire to augment shortfalls in domestic power generation.

Across the dataset, daily power generation regularly falls below the system peak demand of roughly 3700 megawatts (MW), with generation averaging around 3000 MW and thus missing the target by approximately 700 MW daily.

IES said this persistent shortfall suggests underlying issues, potentially rooted in generation capacity limitations, resource constraints, or operational policies that prioritise certain efficiency thresholds.

Such shortfalls, it explained, meant that Ghana faces daily challenges in fulfilling its total energy requirements, which has led to practices such as load shedding or the prioritisation of essential services over broader access.

It continued that the dataset consistently showed that generation remained below demand without any instances of excess power generation.

“While rare, certain days (like October 7, 2024) do show generation levels approaching peak demand, indicating that Ghana’s power infrastructure may have the potential for marginal increases under specific conditions. However, these instances are sporadic and highlight the lack of significant flexibility in the current power generation framework. This pattern points to the country’s inability to convert a significant dependable capacity (close to 5,000 MW) to actual generation capacity due to forced plant shutdowns, fuel supply constraints, and debt issues et cetera, thus limiting the performance of existing infrastructures”, it stressed.

Magnitude and Frequency of Shortfalls

It said the frequency and magnitude of generation falling short of peak demand are striking, adding, the system fails to meet demand every day in the dataset, with shortfalls generally ranging from 700 to 1000 MW.

Such a recurring gap, it stated suggests structural challenges in Ghana’s electricity generation capacity. This continued discrepancy it mentioned impacts the country’s ability to sustain reliable electricity exports, as limited domestic supply necessitates the re-allocation of resources meant for export to satisfy local demand.

Fluctuations in Power Generation

While Ghana’s power generation shows some day-to-day fluctuations, IES alluded that they remain within a relatively narrow band (2700 to 3200 MW).

“The narrow range of these fluctuations implies a stable, albeit limited, generation framework that lacks the flexibility to rapidly scale production up or down based on daily demand variations. This stability, while avoiding extreme volatility, indicates constraints in the system’s ability to dynamically respond to shifts in both peak demand and export opportunities, which hampers operational efficiency and responsiveness”, it said.

On November 2, 2024, Elder Dr. Samuel Amo Tobbin, the Group Chairman of the Tobinco Group of Companies, celebrates his 60th birthday. Affectionately called “Chairman” by his staff, business partners, close friends, and relatives, Dr. Tobbin is not only a successful businessman or entrepreneur; he is also a renowned philanthropist who has also devoted his time to bringing smiles to the faces of the underprivileged and the needy in society through his Samuel Amo Tobbin Foundation (SAT Foundation).

Honoring “Chairman” on his 60th birthday serves as a reminder that true success involves not only reaching the top but also uplifting others along the way. Indeed, Andrew Carnegie, the renowned Scottish-American industrialist and philanthropist, aptly captures this in his famous quote:

“Wealth is not to feed our egos, but to feed the hungry and to help people help themselves.”

Many of us find great inspiration in the life of “Chairman,” also known as Nana Amo Tobbin I, Dwantoahene of the Apinto Divisional Stool, Tarkwa Awodua in the Western Region, and believe he deserves our honour and celebration. Chairman is truly an inspiration and a story that gives much hope to the hopeless.

Dr. Amo Tobbin’s business acumen is also something that budding entrepreneurs can learn from to enhance their profile. He has achieved success not only in the pharmaceutical industry (Tobinco Pharmaceuticals and Entrance Pharmaceuticals and Research Center), where he has carved a niche for himself, but also in other business sectors such as insurance (Priority Insurance Company Limited), banking (Abii National Savings and Loans), construction (Toblues Properties), arts and events (Dor Events), media (Atinka Media Village), hospital (Entrance University Hospital), and education (Entrance University of Health Sciences, Tobinco Training Institute), among others. Perhaps he could organize or provide master tutorials for some of our young entrepreneurs who aspire to succeed.

Industry players and corporate Ghana have celebrated and duly acknowledged Dr. Tobbin’s business excellence. The following awards and recognitions provide ample testimony.

CEO. of the Year 2020-Ghana Manufacturing Awards

Entrepreneur of the Year (2019)– Ghana Pharma Awards

Business Man of the Year (2018) -Chamber Business Award

Entrepreneur of the Year (2018)– Ghana Manufacturing Awards

Entrepreneur of the Year– 5th Ghana Pharma Awards in 2023.

Philanthropic Works

Through his Samuel Amo Tobbin Foundation, Dr. Tobbin has allocated thousands of dollars to provide support to the needy and the vulnerable. This support includes donations to widows, the payment of medical bills for individuals with complex diseases and ailments, the payment of school fees, and the support of state institutions such as the Ghana Police. Notably, he constructed a fully furnished, ultra-modern two-story building, valued at GH3,982,700, nearly GHS 4 million, which now serves as the Headquarters of the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) of the Ghana Police Service.

Galamsey Fight

Dr. Tobbin comes from Tarkwa Awodu in the Western region, one of the areas being devasted by illegal mining, and as part of his contribution to tackling the menace, he has employed over 40 “galamsayers.” These lucky individuals are currently working in various subsidiaries of the Tobinco Group, including Atinka Media Village. Aside from offering them employment, he provided accommodation for them to make their newfound life in Accra very comfortable.

Covid-19 Support

We will fondly remember Dr. Tobbin for his major role in supporting institutions and individuals during the devastating COVID era, which saw many people indoors. He personally visited some poor communities in the capital of Accra to distribute 2000 boxes of beautifully packaged food items to the needy and the vulnerable.

The government had imposed a three-week lockdown to contain the rapid spread of the coronavirus pandemic, causing slum dwellers to lose their daily bread. Ghanaians, particularly the beneficiaries in the ghettos who were uncertain about their next meal, commended the Tobinco CEO for his show of love and compassion.

The Love for God

Elder Amo Tobbin is also a church leader and someone who owes his extreme success to the almighty God. History and posterity will be kind to Elder Amo Tobbin for his unwavering support and contribution to the growth of the Church of Pentecost, as he dedicated all his resources to God’s work.

As we celebrate and honor him on his 60th birthday, we ask God to continue to bless his family and also expand his territory.

Happy birthday, Chairman!

The government, under the leadership of the Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, inaugurated a new music streaming platform named Ghana Music Xperience (GMX) on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at De Icon Centre.

The app, launched in partnership with a private company, GMX Multimedia, and designed by Omni Strategies had support from the Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture.

In his speech at the event, Dr. Bawumia expressed his hope and confidence of helping boost music business in Ghana with the partnership.

However, music producer and tech expert Kobby Spiky Nkrumah is doubting the effective functionality of the app, even though the vice president has assured.

Speaking on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning Show, he explained that the majority of industry players, including musicians and managers, particularly those in rural areas, are not well acquainted with the already existing streaming platforms and have not been properly educated and trained on the processes involved in using the apps.

This makes the GMX App a failure even before it commences operation.

“There’s a lot of education that needs to be done for our musicians. I’ve been doing stuff with music and going round the regions training them on understanding the power of digital marketing and solutions to benefit them and their craft and to put their content out there. You would realise that there’s a lot of knowledge that’s lacking, and so people are suffering today because someone is monetising their music, uploading their music on their behalf, or earning royalties from their music from Spotify, YouTube, and the rest because they don’t know how it’s done.”

“So you’ve brought GMX; now every musician in the rural areas who would have made music and are looking for a way to put it out there, how are they going to put their music on GMX? All these questions need to be answered. They don’t even know how to get their music out there. They rely on people to do it for them, and most of the time they get cheated out of their royalties or streaming numbers. So that problem has not been fixed; GMX may be failing on arrival because a lot of people will be holding their music and asking where they are going to put their music on GMX,” he told Kofi Hayford on Joy Prime.

The tech expert thinks thorough education, training, and empowerment should have been done at the conceptualization stage of the initiative before its launch. He asserted that 90% of musicians across the country will not be able to access the app when operation begins.

Kobby Spiky also highlighted that the government needs to consider the business aspect of the app, as advertisers and subscribers are involved but have unfortunately not been informed about its financial benefits in order to patronize it

“How many advertisers are going to spend on GMX? How many subscribers are going to subscribe to GMX? Because that is what is going to generate the revenue you’re going to share across these artists who are on this platform. It’s going to get to a point where the money is not enough, and some people are going to be like, How much do I even make on GMX? So, we need to think about the business module of it. That’s why I said it’s dead on arrival,” he reiterated.

The music producer reemphasized that a lot of sensitization needs to be done to convince people to patronize the app, making it effective and relevant, especially since it will be in competition with other international platforms.

He suggested that the app should not be limited to only Ghanaian creatives but should be expanded globally to attract more users.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Music Xperience is expected to be operational from January 2025.

The International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) in collaboration with the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), organised a validation meeting in Accra on the Joint Mobile Team concept, an important step in strengthening a whole of government approach to border management and security.

The event focused on presenting the Joint Mobile Teams (JMT) Concept and its Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to other Government of Ghana agencies.

This exercise marked a significant step in advancing inter-agency collaboration in securing Ghana’s border, in line with the objectives of the Strengthening Border Security (SBS) project funded by the European Union Emergency Trust Fund for Africa.

The workshop brought together over 30 key stakeholders from key government institutions, as well as representatives from various border security and management agencies; such as the Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Revenue Authority – Customs Division, Ghana Police Service, National Intelligence Bureau, Narcotics Control Commission, Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Integration and the Ghana Boundary Commission.

The validation exercise provided an interactive platform for participants to assess the draft JMT concept and SOPs, amend sections, and make recommendations to improve the final document.

The JMT concept and SOPs were developed by a Technical Working Group comprising of the GIS, GRA-Customs Division, Ghana Police Service and NIB and are designed to enhance inter-agency collaboration through coordinated joint patrols, information sharing, and effective responses to border security challenges.

ICMPD Ghana, GIS organises validation of Joint Mobile Teams concept, Standard Operating Procedures

The SOP also highlights other important referral agencies for the JMT. It is essential for all agencies operating at the borders to contribute their insights and advise on their roles to ensure operationalisation of the JMT concept.

Prior to the validation workshop, ICMPD organised three simulation exercises at key border crossing points: Paga, Elubo, and Akanu, in the Northern, Western and Volta Regions, borders with Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire and Togo.

These simulation exercises were used to introduce the JMT concept to border security personnel using real-life scenarios to enhance their understanding of the concept and test its practical application. Additionally, it enabled on-the-ground personnel to assess the concept’s relevance to their work and its practical feasibility.

Speaking at the validation meeting, DCOI Laud Ofori Afrifa, Deputy Comptroller General in Charge of Operations and Command Posts at the Ghana Immigration Service, expressed his appreciation for the collaborative efforts that contributed to the development of the JMT concept.

He remarked, ‘‘Effective border management requires a multi-faceted approach, bringing all relevant stakeholders in the border management space on board to ensure the territorial integrity of the country is intact. I am pleased to see all the border agencies committed to the concept, and I am confident that its institutionalization will bring great success and benefits to our nation’s economy.”

The JMT concept is in line with Ghana’s National Security Strategy, which advocates for a collective approach to tackling security challenges through the involvement of multiple agencies.

This initiative builds upon existing agreements, such as the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ghana Immigration Service and the Ghana Revenue Authority – Customs Division, as well as the Memorandum of Agreement between security agencies on Integrated Border Management.

Head of Office at ICMPD Ghana, Amala Obiokoye-Nwalor, emphasised the critical role of inter-agency cooperation in effectively addressing migration and border security challenges in today’s rapidly evolving landscape.

ICMPD Ghana, GIS organises validation of Joint Mobile Teams concept, Standard Operating Procedures

She noted that the JMT is all about fostering inter-agency cooperation and ensuring there is an end-to-end intervention in terms of interception, case management, and referral of both suspects and potential victims.

Ms. Obiokoye-Nwalor further extended her gratitude to the European Union for its continuous support to the SBS project, as well as to all the stakeholders and border management agencies that contributed to the development and validation of the JMT concept.

ICMPD remains dedicated to supporting the government of Ghana’s efforts in migration governance, migration policy development, and national security.

The successful validation of the JMT concept and SOP establishes a foundation for implementing the Joint Mobile Teams Concept to enhance border security in Ghana.

Joy Prime’s culinary reality television show comes your way this week with more excitement, fun, and drama in the kitchen.

The remaining contestants will tackle the “Chanel Rice” task to impress the judges and hopefully dodge eviction.

Last Sunday saw six teams battle it out in the kitchen, undertaking the indomie and flavour infusion task. All teams were given 30 minutes in the kitchen to prepare their meals.

Representatives of Ho Technical University, Sherifa, and Jones, who emerged as “Star School of the Day” the week before, were given the opportunity to choose between cooking with other teams and sitting out the cooking to supervise the teams while they cook instead of the judges.

Both contestants chose to cook as they believed they had great potential to impress the judges with their meals and sweep the weekly title again.

Unfortunately, things did not go as planned for Ho Technical University and the other five teams, as they failed to impress Chef Sam, Chef Rafiatu, and Nutritionist Rejoice with their meals.

The Judges expressed their disappointment at how badly they all performed in the kitchen and denied them the chance to be awarded “Star School of the Day.” News about representatives of Bolgatanga Technical University, Mabel, and Baraka exiting from the kitchen sent shock waves amongst contestants, leaving a gloomy atmosphere in the kitchen.

The remaining five teams were cautioned and advised to go back to their drawing boards and come up with creative ways to tackle tasks. They also encouraged them to work together as a team, as competition will only get tough as weeks go by.

This Sunday, the remaining 5 contestants are back in the kitchen to right their wrongs and hopefully impress the judges with their hot sizzling meals. They take on the “Chanel Rice” challenge, and they are prepared to show the judges the skill they can display in the kitchen.

Which tertiary institution will rise to the occasion and impress the judges, and which team’s meal will disappoint the judges?

Join host Michelle Agyekum, the judges, and the aspiring chefs every Sunday at the only station that brings the Ultimate Experience to your homes, Joy Prime.

Also, to keep your favourite team in the competition, vote for them to the short code *711*603.

The 2004-year group of Prempeh College is investing in the teaching and learning of science and mathematics with the donation of some learning materials to its alma mater.

The alumni donated 90 graph boards to be used in 89 classrooms at the school, an effort that not only addresses current classroom needs but also looks at enhancing the quality of education.

The group also supplied blackboard rulers and other measuring tools that will be particularly valuable for other lessons.

The donation is in celebration of the school’s 75th anniversary since its establishment as one of the top senior high schools in the country.

2004 Prempeh College alumni class donates graph boards to enhance mathematics education at alma mater

President of the group, Osei Kofi Abbey, highlighted the motivation behind the batch’s donation to Prempeh College.

“I remember when I was in Prempeh College, there were so many things that you see labels on donated by so many groups of the school and we thought that it is important that we also contribute to the teaching and learning because others have already contributed,” he said.

With this inspiration, Abbey and his cohort were driven to make a difference by providing essential tools that would support the curriculum and enrich the classroom experience.

According to him, the school has groomed them to become the intellects they are now and was only prudent to give back to the school.

The donation made by the 2004 batch ensures that current and future students have access to quality tools and resources, empowering them to pursue excellence in their studies and laying the foundation for them to also give back to their school and community.

They believe having access to accurate and durable educational materials like graph boards and geometry tools can greatly improve both teaching efficiency and student understanding of Mathematics.

“Basically, every single student does core maths, and other courses like e-maths, physics and economics. And scientists have proven that visual and graphical learning is very important for the development and the growth of the mind,” said Osei Kofi Assibey.

He is advocating for past students to give back to the school.

Assistant Headmaster, Academics, James Owusu Acheaw, expressed gratitude to the group for the generous donation, recognizing the importance of resources that directly impact education.

“As an academic institution, anything that goes into teaching and learning is within our priority,” he said.

According to him, Prempeh College had previously struggled with a shortage of graph boards, essential tools for mathematics and science classrooms.

“The limited number available had to be rotated between classrooms which complicated lessons in various classes,” he stated.

An Accra High Court has overturned the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) 2019 decision to revoke the operating license of CDH Savings and Loans Company Limited.

According to the court, both parties should resolve the issue through arbitration.

Delivering the ruling on November 1, 2024, Justice Brew criticised BoG’s approach, emphasising the constitutional requirement for fair and reasonable administrative actions.

The Court found BoG’s two-week deadline for CDH to liquidate assets to address its liquidity challenges “unreasonable and unfair.”

The BoG originally revoked CDH’s license on August 16, 2019, citing liquidity problems linked to CDH’s inability to sell repossessed collateral, which prevented it from meeting depositors’ withdrawal demands.

CDH’s shareholders, CDH Financial Holdings Limited, subsequently challenged the revocation, seeking to have it quashed on grounds of procedural unfairness and requesting arbitration to avoid further operational disruptions.

In his ruling, Justice Brew referred to Article 23 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, highlighting the obligation for fairness in administrative actions.

NDC challenges NPP’s ambitious vote target in Volta Region, calls it ‘unrealistic and outlandish’ https://www.myjoyonline.com/ndc-challenges-npps-ambitious-vote-target-in-volta-region-calls-it-unrealistic-and-outlandish/ https://www.myjoyonline.com/ndc-challenges-npps-ambitious-vote-target-in-volta-region-calls-it-unrealistic-and-outlandish/#respond Fri, 01 Nov 2024 17:40:15 +0000 https://www.myjoyonline.com/?p=10032630245 The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region has responsed to recent statements by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Communications Director, Richard Ahiagba, who claimed that the NPP would secure 500,000 votes in the Volta Region in the upcoming December elections.]]>

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region has responsed to recent statements by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Communications Director, Richard Ahiagba, who claimed that the NPP would secure 500,000 votes in the Volta Region in the upcoming December elections.

According to the NDC, this ambitious projection is not only far-fetched but also demonstrates the NPP’s lack of connection with the realities on the ground.

The NDC’s Volta Regional Communications Officer, Sorkpa Kafui Agbleze, denounced Mr Ahiagba’s projection as “absurd” and “frankly insulting” to the intelligence of Voltarians, arguing that the NPP has historically fallen far short of similar targets in the past.

In an official statement, Mr Agbleze pointed to the NPP’s vote history in the Volta Region, highlighting their failure to make substantial electoral gains despite repeatedly setting high benchmarks.

“Since 2008, the NPP has set unrealistic targets in the Volta Region, only to underperform each time. Their figures have consistently wavered, with no meaningful improvement,” Agbleze stated.

For instance, the NPP set a 30% target for the Volta Region in the 2016 presidential election but garnered only 10.81% of the vote. In 2020, despite claims that they were gaining ground, they achieved just 14.14%. According to the NDC, the NPP’s fluctuating vote percentages—15.38% in 2008, 12.9% in 2012, and a low of 10.18% in 2016—illustrate a persistent lack of traction in the Volta Region.

The NDC further critiqued the feasibility of the NPP’s current goal, given the Volta Region’s voter statistics. With approximately 1,023,147 registered voters in the region, achieving nearly 500,000 votes would demand an unprecedented level of trust and support that the NPP has historically been unable to attain.

“This target would require a level of support that the NPP has never earned and will never receive, particularly from a population that has been hit hard by economic hardships under their administration,” Mr Agbleze argued, alluding to the current economic conditions including inflation, high unemployment rates, and the depreciating value of the cedi.

Rather than setting what the NDC calls “fantasy” goals, Mr Agbleze urged the NPP to take accountability for the economic difficulties that have affected the livelihoods of Ghanaians, particularly in the Volta Region.

The NDC argues that the region has faced enough economic challenges, and any ambitious claims by the NPP are a testament to the “disconnect between their rhetoric and reality.”

In his statement, Mr Agbleze assured the NDC’s commitment to maintaining the Volta Region as a historic stronghold, emphasising that the people of the region are “fully aware” of which party truly prioritizes their welfare.

He called on the public to remain discerning, rejecting what he described as “empty promises” from the NPP.

This passionate response from the NDC underscores the intensity of the political rivalry as the December 7 elections draw closer, especially in regions traditionally dominated by the party.

The NDC remains confident in their solid support within the Volta Region and is determined to sustain that strength against what they see as exaggerated promises from their opponents.

In a progressive step to tackle billing inaccuracies, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has implemented a monthly meter reading initiative for customers in the Volta and Oti Regions.

This move, aimed at ensuring billing reflects actual electricity consumption, comes in response to widespread concerns about the accuracy of ECG’s previous quarterly billing system.

At the forefront of this initiative, the ECG’s Regional Commercial Manager, Solomon Adjiku, has been meeting with meter readers across various districts to reinforce the critical role of accurate monthly readings.

During these engagements, he highlighted the importance of precise meter readings in building transparency and trust between ECG and its customers.

“Shifting to monthly readings will not only minimize billing errors but also foster improved communication with our customers,” Mr Adjiku stated.

“We want customers to feel assured that their bills reflect only the electricity they have used.”

The transition from quarterly to monthly meter readings in the Volta and Oti Regions is part of a larger ECG strategy focused on enhancing operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.

With more frequent meter readings, the company aims to reduce disputes arising from estimated charges and provide clearer, more accurate billing, reflecting real-time energy use.

Mr Adjiku urged meter readers to be meticulous, adhering strictly to company procedures to ensure the highest standards of accuracy.

“Our dedication to accuracy directly affects our customer’s experience and confidence in our services,” he added, calling on the team to take pride in their role as an essential link between ECG and the community.

Customers in the Volta and Oti Regions are expected to benefit significantly from this initiative as ECG rolls out the new reading schedule, fostering greater transparency and efficiency.

This monthly approach marks a milestone in ECG’s efforts to address billing concerns, signaling a commitment to continually evolving its services in response to customer needs.

ECG also encourages all customers to ensure timely payment of their electricity bills, a crucial aspect that enables the company to further improve and expand its services.

As ECG continues to innovate and adapt, it looks forward to strengthening its relationship with customers in the Volta and Oti Regions, paving the way for a more transparent, reliable billing experience.

A Lecturer at the University of Media Arts and Communication-Institute of Film and Television (UniMAC-IFT), Dr Joseph Chegadam Aketema, will confront a contentious issue: “The Image of Africa in Hollywood Films,” as part of the Inter-faculty Research Seminar hosted by the Directorate of Research Innovation and Development (DRID) at the University of Media Arts and Communication (UniMAC).

Scheduled for Friday, November 8, 2024, via Zoom, this lecture promises to offer a fresh lens on how African realities are depicted in mainstream Western media.

In a pre-lecture interview with DRID, Dr Aketema described his motivation to address the often-problematic narratives Hollywood has shaped about Africa.

“This lecture stems from a need to turn the lens on these portrayals, looking deeply at how Africa is historicized and represented in Western media,” he explained.

UniMAC-DRID seminar to examine Hollywood’s portrayal of Africa

Dr Aketema is particularly interested in sparking critical discussion around “how we, as Black Africans and people of African descent, can dismantle the yokes of subjugation, distortion, and representation.”

The lecture will include an understanding of history, Afrocentric theory, and the impact of Hollywood’s powerful media reach.

Dr Aketema underscored the need for African filmmakers to form a collective front, suggesting that “one arrow cannot kill an elephant.” He believes a unified approach in the African film industry can counteract the influence of Hollywood’s well-established studios and offer more authentic representations of African culture.

The event will also highlight figures in African media history who have worked to change the narrative. “People don’t know about Ali Mata Salembere, one of the founders of FESPACO, or the impact of early African filmmakers,” Dr Aketema said, adding that a deeper understanding of these efforts may inspire new ways of thinking for today’s African filmmakers and cultural scholars.

Hundreds of women from the Builsa North Municipality of the Upper East Region of Ghana have benefited from a massive cancer screening campaign in the capital, Sandema.

The screening exercise, a collaborative effort between the Sandema Hospital and the United States-based 501(c) non-profit organization, Unlimited Cancer Care International, UCCI, marked programmes to commemorate this year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month of October.

Led by midwives, nurses and medics from the Sandema Hospital, the three-day screening exercise which also included students from the Sandema Secondary School, saw over one hundred and fifty-eight women go through breast screening, with over one hundred and thirty-one others being screened for cervical cancers.

With ten women testing positive for cervical cancer, one with lumps and another with obscene breasts, the exercise, according to the organizers was hugely successful.

Upon receipt of the reports, the President and Founder of Unlimited Cancer Care International, Agivert Jackson, commended the hospital for what she called “one more bold step towards the collective fight against cancers”.

“I want to point out that, the fight against cancers, is a collective responsibility, and you have once again heeded the call, even now when it matters most” “she said.

Ms Jackson stated that “when it comes to dealing with the scare of cancers that confront the world, we are ready to pull the strings, flip chapters, and go the extra expensive mile to make a mark, and here today, we showed that we are not giving up the fight”.

“Day in, day out, women are diagnosed with breast cancer. Men are no exception since they are also diagnosed with all forms of male-related cancers including prostate cancers. But with early detection, coupled with the required support, survival rates would continue to increase” she said.

She therefore called for regular self-checks, at the least.

“It is important to self-check and follow that up with seeing a doctor at the appropriate medical facilities for checks for the slightest symptoms of any forms of cancers” Ms Jackson added.

She commended the Sandema Hospital for its consistency in the annual breast screening exercise and the Headmaster and the Sandema Secondary School for allowing the school to participate.

In August this year, UCCI embarked on a Ghana Cancer Awareness project where it undertook a series of activities geared at creating the requisite awareness in the fight against cancers.

The one-month-long “Ghana Cancer Awareness Project” saw the team, including partners from M&B Foundation take the team to Ada in the Greater Accra Region, the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital in the Central Region, the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, Sandema among others.

The team, under the “Condi Projects” also donated cancer-awareness creations branded educational materials such as mathematical sets, exercise books, backpacks and many more items to selected schools in Ghana to enhance the drive.

Female inmates at the Kumasi Central Prisons were presented with cash donations by the team.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken its legal battle to the Sekondi High Court, filing a new application to secure Joana Gyan Cudjoe’s place on the December 7 parliamentary ballot as its candidate for Amenfi Central.

This legal move follows the dismissal of an earlier application by an Accra High Court, in which the NDC sought to restrain the Electoral Commission (EC) from printing ballots and the notice of poll, in defense of Cudjoe’s eligibility.

The NDC hopes this approach will grant them the time needed to ensure Madam Cudjoe’s candidacy on the party’s ticket.

Speaking to JoyNews, the NDC’s Deputy Director of Elections and IT, Dr Rashid Tanko Computer, stated that the party is pursuing further legal action at the Sekondi High Court to overturn the existing injunction affecting Madam Cudjoe’s candidacy.

“This is based on the ruling of the Accra High Court refusing us the injunction because of the earlier injunction which is still active and I cannot authoritatively state that we have actually filed the process as Sekondi High Court and duly serve the Electoral Commission to halt any processes,” he explained.

He added that the hearing which is set for November 7 at the Sekondi High Court, aims to vacate the injunction and pave the way for Madam Cudjoe’s picture to appear on the ballot paper.

Meanwhile, the Amenfi Central NDC have expressed strong dissatisfaction over the EC’s disqualification of their Parliamentary Candidate, Joana Gyan Cudjoe.

At a press conference addressed by Constituency Secretary, Fiifi Sangmoah, the party described the EC’s action as “undemocratic, unconstitutional, provocative, and barefacedly instigated.”

The controversy surrounds the May 13, 2023, parliamentary primaries, where Madam Gyan Cudjoe won overwhelmingly.

However, dissatisfied individuals filed a lawsuit, securing an interlocutory injunction that temporarily restrained her from holding herself out as the duly elected candidate.

The NDC’s Functional Executive Committee annulled the May 13, 2023, elections and conducted fresh primaries on September 8, 2024.

Madam Gyan Cudjoe emerged victorious once again, with the EC supervising the process.

The party argues that the September election superseded the May election, rendering the earlier contest irrelevant and reinforcing Madam Gyan Cudjoe’s legitimacy.

Despite the NDC’s arguments, the EC disqualified Madam Gyan Cudjoe, citing the interlocutory injunction tied to the annulled May 2023 election.

The party sees this decision as a gross display of incompetence and vows to fight back.

The NDC demands that the EC restore Madam Gyan Cudjoe’s name on the notice of poll and ballot papers for Amenfi Central.

”We will only accept the outcome of the December 7, 2024, elections if Madam Gyan Cudjoe remains a contender. As Fiifi Sangmoah emphasized, We will not stop until justice is done and the people’s will is restored.”

Hajia Fathia Abdul Aziz, a staffer at the office of the President was part of those who cut sod for the construction of the facility early this year.

The newly built office was completed within eight months. Officials of the Savelugu NHIS over the years have been operating in rented accommodation.

The edifice was fully funded by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), in line with its modernization and infrastructure expansion agenda.

Although Savelugu was not originally part of the plan for the current phase of office construction, it was later considered after intense lobbying by Hajia Fathia.

Madam Fathia in her remarks at the sod-cutting ceremony underscored the importance of access to quality healthcare to the people of Savelugu.

Aside from Hajia Fathia, Ghana’s Second Lady, Hajia Samira Bawumia was also joined by the National Health Authority (NHIA), Chief Executive, Dr Da-Costa Aboagye to inaugurate the newly built District Office in the Savelugu Municipality on October 24, 2024.

Hajia Samira Bawumia at the opening ceremony applauded the Authority for the numerous completed and ongoing projects geared towards making the NHIS accessible to all residents in Ghana.
According to her, the NHIS has for the past 20 years of its existence impacted the health-seeking behaviour of many people.

She described as unprecedented the level of investments in the health sector made by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration, in the Fourth Republic.

“Agenda 111 is an ambitious and unprecedented healthcare project.”

The Second Lady urged people to prioritize their health by embracing the NHIA’s Preventive, Promotive and Wellness programme.

For his part, Dr. Da-Costa Aboagye attributed the NHIA’s achievements to the national digitalization agenda driven by the Vice President, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

As part of the Authority’s digital revolution, he referenced the E-pharmacy project, the ongoing nationwide registration of children aged 6-14 years, by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in collaboration with the National Identification Authority (NIA) and MyNHIS App.

He further elaborated on the addition of four mental health illnesses to the NHIS Benefit Package, dialysis treatment, four childhood cancers and prompt payments of Claims to credentialed healthcare providers.

Dr Da-Costa Aboagye called for concerted efforts to end illegal charges by some credentialed healthcare providers.

The Referees Manager of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Alex Kotey, has stated that the association intends to emulate how the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) was used at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The use of VAR at the tournament in Côte d’Ivoire received worldwide commendation, with many describing it as efficient and the best use of the technology to date.

The GFA announced earlier this week that they were set to meet a FIFA delegation in Accra on Thursday and Friday to discuss the rollout of VAR in Ghana’s domestic leagues.

The two-day meeting, known as the VAR kick-off meeting, is crucial for FIFA’s Implementation Assessment Approval Program, which is necessary for any member association adopting VAR.

“We agree that we can’t use VAR at all the league venues. It will be used for league matches that are broadcast live on television,” Kotey told Asempa FM.

“If you watched the previous Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, the VAR decisions were on point. That’s what we want to emulate.”

Alex Kotey and the GFA’s General Secretary, Prosper Harrison Addo, were among the GFA delegation to attend the meeting.

President Akufo-Addo has underscored the need for stringent cybersecurity measures as the country steps into a new era of digital connectivity.

According to him, while 5G technology holds tremendous potential for advancing Ghana’s economy and empowering the youth, ensuring robust data privacy and security frameworks is essential.

He said this at the launch of the 55 service in Accra on Friday, October 11.

Speaking in Accra, the President emphasised that “the journey ahead requires vision and responsibility. 5G is a powerful catalyst for shaping Ghana’s future.”

“With this power comes the responsibility to use it wisely. We must address concerns around data privacy, cybersecurity, and responsible use to ensure that 5G fosters progress, not division.”

As Ghana’s youth, who make up a significant portion of the population, stand to benefit from enhanced digital capabilities, the President highlighted government initiatives, including the Ghana Innovation Hub and coding programs, designed to equip young people with vital digital skills.

“Through initiatives like the Ghana Innovation Hub and coding programs, we’re equipping them with digital skills to drive the future of innovation in Ghana by empowering the youth, we ensure a future where domestic talent drives our digital transformation,” he added.

But he stressed that alongside these programs, efforts to protect data integrity and ensure safe usage must be prioritised.

The Government of Ghana has officially launched its high-speed 5G internet service.

The event, held at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra on Friday, November 1, 2024, was themed “5G: Accelerating Ghana’s Digital Transformation.”

5G technology, often called the Fifth Generation of Wireless Technology, promises faster internet speeds, enhanced upload and download capacities, more consistent connections, and improved network capacity.

Like its predecessors—3G, 4G, and 4G LTE—5G operates on similar radio frequencies, but it significantly upgrades the internet experience for mobile users.

The government awarded the 5G license to Next Gen Infraco (NGIC), a new shared infrastructure company co-promoted by the government and seven other partners.

This shared infrastructure aims to provide affordable 5G mobile broadband services across Ghana. Key partners include Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia, Tech Mahindra, AT Ghana, and Telecel Ghana.

In his keynote address, President Akufo-Addo emphasised that Ghana is at a crucial point where digital technology is no longer optional but essential.

He highlighted the country’s digital transformation agenda, which aims to create an inclusive digital ecosystem critical for job creation, economic diversification, and global competitiveness.

President Akufo-Addo

“5G technology will have a transformative impact on our national landscape. Its high speed, minimum latency and enhanced capacity will drive our agenda forward, artificial intelligence and data analytics into daily lives across Ghana from urban centres to remote villages,” he stated.

President Akufo-Addo explained that 5G will drive innovations in health, education, agriculture, and security.

He envisioned a future where remote healthcare consultations, expanded access to educational content, and technological advancements reach even the remotest areas.

“5G will be a catalyst for industrial growth, empowering domestic businesses, particularly micro, small and medium-sized enterprises and SMEs, which are the backbone of our economy with faster, more reliable internet, MSMEs can reach new markets, streamline logistics and scale up their operations,” he added.

In manufacturing and agriculture, 5G will enable real-time data collection and machine-to-machine communication, enhancing productivity and sustainability. Innovations like precision farming, remote monitoring, and smart irrigation will boost food security and promote sustainable practices in agriculture, a sector vital to the livelihoods of many Ghanaians.

The President underscored that industrialisation remains a priority for his administration, and with 5G-enabled automation, robotics, and augmented reality, Ghana’s industrial progress will accelerate, making the country an attractive hub for technological investment and excellence.

“With 5G, we can envisage seamless access to public services, real-time, emergency responses, improved urban planning and enhanced monitoring of public infrastructure. We aim to build a responsive government that evolves with the digital age,” President Akufo-Addo said.

Highlighting existing efforts like the digitised national ID system, E-governance initiatives, and mobile financial services, the President added that 5G will strengthen these programs, making public services quicker, more transparent, and more efficient.

He also said that security is paramount, and 5G’s advanced capabilities will help safeguard the nation’s digital infrastructure, ensuring a secure and sustainable digital future.

He affirmed the government’s commitment to bridging the digital divide so that no Ghanaian is left behind.

“We’re partnering with the private sector to expand infrastructure in underserved areas, knowing that technology’s impact is only as significant as its accessibility. Our vision is a Ghana where every citizen, regardless of location, can harness the power of 5G, unlocking opportunities that were once unimaginable.”

Goldkey Properties, developers of award-winning residential, commercial and mixed-use spaces in Accra, hosted “Blossoms of Hope”, in partnership with the UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce (UKGCC), to raise awareness about breast cancer, focusing on prevention, early detection, and treatment options.

Held at Cantonments City Green Park, Cantonments with support from Blue Skies Ghana LTD., “Blossoms of Hope” featured a panel discussion, a free breast cancer screening conducted by Impact Medical and Diagnostic Centre, and a networking session.

Justine Koblavie, the Head of the Commercial Business Unit at Goldkey Properties LTD., remarked that her company was pleased to organise the event as raising awareness about breast cancer and promoting early detection contributes to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goal 3- Good Health and Well-being.

“By organising the “Blossoms of Hope” event, Goldkey Properties is also able to demonstrate its commitment to social responsibility, employee well-being, and community health, ultimately benefiting business and the wider community”, she added.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the UKGCC, Adjoba Kyiamah, remarked that she was “inspired by the amazing stories of strength and survival shared at the event”. She commended the panel for a great job communicating the prevention, early detection, and treatment options of breast cancer, and urged all to prioritise their health and get screened regularly.

Challenges, Opportunities, and the Future of Breast Cancer Care

Speaking during the panel discussion on “Challenges, Opportunities, and the Future of Breast Cancer Care”, Clinical Oncologist, Dr. Edwina Ayaaba Ayavilah, encouraged all women to regularly check their breasts for abnormalities, emphasising that breast cancer is not a death sentence when diagnosed early.

According to her, regular self-exams and screenings are crucial for catching potential issues before they progress.

“Knowing what to look out for and having a plan in place can make all the difference. Early detection signs can include noticeable changes in the breast or surrounding areas,” she explained.

Dr. Ayavilah added that risk factors such as age and a woman’s menarche also contribute to the likelihood of developing breast cancer.

“The time at which you have your menarche—that’s your first menstrual cycle—affects your risk of breast cancer. You can’t control this, just as you can’t control when you enter menopause,” she said.

Dr. Ayavilah appealed to the government for strategic support and investment to expand radiotherapy facilities across the country.

“We currently have limited resources, and many patients cannot access necessary treatment due to financial and geographical barriers. Increasing access to radiotherapy is crucial if we are to improve survival outcomes, especially for underserved regions,” she emphasized.

She noted that cultural beliefs often deter people from seeking timely care, calling for continuous, year-round breast cancer advocacy and locally-focused research to better understand cancer trends within Ghana and across Africa.

“We need to build our own data and insights to know what works best for Ghanaian patients. Collaboration with transparent, impactful organisations is essential to achieving this,” she said.

Surviving Breast Cancer

Breast cancer survivor and advocate Gina Kumah-Dzagah, who battled breast cancer for over two years and survived, shared her commitment to advocacy by telling her story and ensuring that other women receive the necessary help they need.

“After my treatment, I became dedicated to helping others navigate this journey. I sew artificial breast prostheses to ensure that no woman in Ghana has to worry about post-surgery self-image concerns or resort to inadequate alternatives,” she shared.

Mrs. Kumah-Dzagah highlighted the importance of breast cancer awareness, urging women to take early warning signs seriously.

“Before my diagnosis, I believed that October awareness was just noise. But lack of awareness almost cost me my life. Please, know the signs and symptoms, and if you detect anything unusual, go to the hospital immediately. Early detection and timely, effective treatment are key to survival,” she added.

She further stressed the importance of destigmatizing cancer and improving public education to reduce misinformation about breast cancer.

Salam Mustapha, National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed his delight at the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) for calling off its strike and resuming academic activities at the University of Ghana.

“It was a great delight to receive the news that UTAG has called off its strike,” Mustapha declared, adding, “I am exceedingly happy with this development and doff my hat for UTAG and salute them.”

On October 28, 2024, Mustapha had issued a press release urging the resumption of academic work at public universities, emphasizsng that his appeal was made in the interest of the students.

“I was mindful of the academic work and also their constitutional right to vote since most of the students registered on campus,” he explained.

He recognised the concerns of both students and faculty members about the impact of a prolonged strike on the academic calendar, noting, “I have had fruitful discussions with some executives of UTAG and members who expressed grave worry over the continuation of the strike as it had the propensity to dislocate the realigned academic calendar.”

In closing, Mustapha reiterated his gratitude toward UTAG and its leadership for their dedication to the academic community.

“Once again, I wish to express my profound gratitude to UTAG and its executives for their show of good faith, fidelity, and commitment to Ghanaian students. The NPP youth wing says Ayeekoo,” he affirmed, signalling a hopeful path forward for both students and educators as the academic year resumes.

Workers of the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital at Akwapim-Mampong in the Eastern Region on Friday, November 1, 2024, demonstrated to draw public and national attention to the rate at which drivers plying the Accra-Koforidua and Adukrom road knockdown and kill pedestrians including staff of the hospital.

The protest comes after a midwife was knocked down on the road in front of the medical facility.

The young midwife, Ruth Nartey, was reportedly knocked down by a speeding vehicle in front of the hospital on Wednesday, 30th October.

The protestors are drawing attention to the absence of speed ramps on that stretch.

The killing of Ruth Nartey brings to three the number of pedestrians who have been knocked down this year.

Two of the three victims, Ruth and an elderly woman identified as a trader passed on due to the severity of the injuries sustained.

Another victim, a former lab technician of the hospital, is still recuperating.

A leader of the enraged hospital staff who identified himself as Felix said the demonstration would culminate in a sit-down strike in the coming days if this initial action failed to yield the desired result.

In a petition presented to the Akuapem North Municipal Assembly, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association in the Akuapem North Municipality and the staff of Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital proposed the following solutions to prevent further tragedies on this stretch of road.

Construction of Speed Ramps: The installation of speed ramps at appropriate intervals will effectively reduce vehicle speeds in front of the hospital. The presence of speed ramps will require drivers to slow down, thus providing pedestrians with a safer opportunity to cross.

Pedestrian Crosswalks and Signage: Marked pedestrian crosswalks accompanied by clear, visible signage will alert drivers to expect pedestrians to cross, especially during peak hours when the flow of people is highest.

Road Markings and Reflective Lights: Installing reflective road markings and lights at the crosswalks will enhance visibility, particularly at night or during adverse weather conditions, reducing the likelihood of accidents.

Speed Limit Signage: Clearly displayed speed limit signs in both directions, supported by enforcement mechanisms where feasible, will remind drivers to reduce their speed in this critical area.

They believe that implementing these safety measures will produce multiple, far-reaching benefits, including reduced Fatalities and injuries, enhanced public trust and safety, and reduced burden on medical staff and resources.

They urgently appealed to the Municipal Chief Executive, the Eastern Regional Minister, and the Department of Highways Authority to act promptly in constructing speed ramps and installing appropriate pedestrian safety measures in front of Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital.

“We are confident that your immediate attention to this petition will help save lives and prevent further injuries along this hazardous stretch of road. Thank you for considering this critical safety request. We look forward to your swift action to avert further preventable tragedies.”

The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party, Salam Mustapha, has apologised to Prof. Ransford Gyampo after levelling several allegations of malfeasance against him.

Mustapha now says his accusations against the respected academic are unfounded as he has no evidence to back them.

He had accused Gyampo of collaborating with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to influence student voting by using the recent University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) strike as a tactic.

Additionally, Mustapha accused Prof. Gyampo of seeking a political appointment under an NDC government and of having a negative international reputation tied to allegations of misconduct with students.

However, Mustapha has formally retracted these allegations, acknowledging the defamatory nature of his claims.

In a retraction issued Friday, he admitted that he has no evidence to support his accusations and has issued an unreserved apology to Prof. Gyampo.

“Lawyers for Prof. Gyampo have since engaged me, drawing my attention to the defamatory nature of the contents of my Press Release,” Mr. Mustapha stated. “Given that I have no evidence to back the allegations I made against Prof. Gyampo, I hereby retract and render an unqualified apology to him.”

In March 2024, Evans Cadman Yamoah, held the crowd spell-bound with a captivating performance to claim gold for Ghana in the men’s high jump event at the African Games event held in Accra.

Roared on by a proud partisan crowd, the 23-year-old was the toast of fans, with the crowd responding with a cheer to every leap, on his way to a stunning gold medal.

At the time, the nation brimmed with enormous pride, and the Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif, who handed him his shiny medal, described the moment as special.

Six months on, however, Cadman Yamoah is facing expulsion for failure to pay tuition fees, which amounts to over $15,000.

Yamoah had been on scholarship since transferring from the University of Ghana to the University of Central Missouri in 2022.

But because he already spent two years competing in the collegiate system in Ghana, his NCAA scholarship eligibility expired before he could complete the school.

Now in his final year, Cadman Yamoah’s scholarship has been taken from him and left to fend for himself.

Yamoah took up a job on campus as allowed, but that barely covers his boarding and feeding, with nothing left to pay for the tuition.

“I have tried a lot of options, but the feedback has not been good,” he told Joy Sports.

Some of the options he tried included writing officially to the Ministry of Youth and Sports to request for financial support.

“In the letter, I attached all the evidence as they requested I did, including my transcripts and fees portal information, but they never got back to me and have stopped responding to my messages.”

“I also wrote to other state agencies, but none has responded to my email.

Yamoah’s parents still live in Ghana, working as civil servants, and cannot afford to defray any of their son’s fees.

“The other day, I got called into accounts office and was told I have till December 15 to get the balance paid off since I’m getting out of school. If I fail to comply, I wouldn’t get my degree and the matter would be taken to a debt collection agency, which would not be good for me.’’

Now, Yamoah has resorted to using the media to appeal well-meaning Ghanaians or institutions to come to his aid.

“I am humbly asking for help from anyone who can help me, to please come to my aid to help me graduate. When I had the chance to represent the country, I did it with all my strength and my might.

“I gave my everything to bring smiles to the faces of Ghanaians by winning gold at the African Games.

“I am appealing to the President, the former President, private individuals and businesses, please help me graduate. I don’t want all my years of school to be wasted without my degree,” he appealed.

Joy Sports reached Ghana Athletics, the governing body for track and field in Ghana, and officials confirmed they are aware of Cadman Yamoah’s situation, and say they have been trying to get him help, because the office itself simply does not have the financial wherewithal to help him.

Consumers of millet porridge, known popularly as ‘Hausa Koko’, are paying more to have a satisfying breakfast, as the cost of the main production ingredient – millet – surges.

Vendors say it costs a minimum of GHs15 to purchase the porridge with other accompaniments like milk, peanuts and bean fritters or koose.

Luv Business explored the rising cost of the millet which is also impacting the sale of Brukina in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi.

Hausa koko, brukina see soaring prices as cost of millet surges

“This koko together with milk and ground is 8 cedis,” Alima Sadia, a Hausa koko vendor, told the news team as she serves her customer at Bomso, a suburb of the Oforikrom municipality.

Millet porridge or Hausa Koko is one of the favorite and accessible breakfast dishes for many Ghanaians.

Made from a mixture of grounded millet and other local spices, the porridge is usually enjoyed with other pastries, like koose.

But what was once the cheapest breakfast meal on the Ghanaian menu is now an expensive luxury.

Alimatu Sadia has been in the business for the past two decades.

“At first we used to package the koko with fritters at 10 cedis but now it’s selling at 15 cedis. That’s how much you pay to get a satisfying meal,” she said.

Millet is a household grain used for many delicacies in Ghana, especially in the Northern part.

Its gritty texture adds a satisfying feel when processed into Brukina, a local millet and milk smoothie.

But the snack is also seeing an astronomical rise.

Hausa koko, brukina see soaring prices as cost of millet surges

“These used to sell at 3, 4 and 7 cedis. But because the price of millet has shot up, they are selling at 10 cedis and 5 cedis. We no longer sell 3 cedis,” Gifty, a Brukina vendor at Ayigya, said.

The increasing cost of the meals is attributable to the price surge and scarcity of its major ingredients, millet and beans.

The price of the commodity on the market is seeing a 120% surge from 500 cedis to 1,200 cedis.

Hajia Munira explains the increasing costs.

“Last year, a bag of millet sold at 500 cedis but now it is selling at 1,200 cedis. The exchange rate is our headache,” she said.

The millet is not the only increasing commodity, the beans used for the fritters added to the Hausa kokoare now shooting up.

Hausa koko, brukina see soaring prices as cost of millet surges

Alhaji retails beans at the Alabar market. But his shop is almost empty after the trucks of beans he is transporting from neighbouring Burkina Faso and Niger were hijacked.

“Where we import from isn’t safe. We are sometimes held up at the checkpoints for days and when we return here most of commodities would be spoilt,” Alhaji recounted.

The cup of beans, locally measured as “Olonka” is selling at 65 cedis and a bag is now over 2,100 cedis.

Back at Alimatu’s koko joint, some of her workers are leaving the job which serves as a daily source of income. She is no longer able to pay them an adequate wage.

“Most of my workers have left now. One of them has even packed up her stuff and ready to leave me,” she worriedly said.

Many vendors along the downstream of the value chain are anxious for respite from the skyrocketing prices
