Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Edward Omane Boamah, has assured the party faithful of a robust monitoring plan for the deployment of election materials ahead of the 2024 general elections.

In a Facebook post issued on Thursday, 21st November, he emphasised the party’s commitment to ensuring a transparent and fair electoral process.

The assurance follows the recent commencement of election material deployment by the Electoral Commission.

Omane Boamah stressed the importance of this phase in the electoral process, stating that the NDC is closely observing each step to prevent any potential irregularities.

He reaffirmed the party’s determination to safeguard the integrity of the elections.

In his statement, the former Communications Minister revealed that the NDC’s monitoring teams have been equipped with simple yet effective detection tools.

These tools are designed to assist in tracking and verifying the deployment of election materials, ensuring that the process aligns with expected standards of fairness and transparency.

He encouraged party members to remain focused and united, reiterating the party’s commitment to securing a credible election outcome that reflects the will of the Ghanaian people.

“We admit that as the election day draws closer, the action gets closer and closer to you, all, in the regions, constituencies and the polling stations.”

“This being the case, we trust that our hard-working EAGLEEYES teams across the country empowered with the necessary ‘simple’ detection tools will make us proud, as we coordinate from headquarters,” he posted.

Police Planning Officer at the UN Mission Support for Justice Reform, ACP Dr Benjamin Agordzo has expressed concerns about the preparedness of Ghana’s current police administration and National Election Security Task Force (NESTF) ahead of the December 7 elections.

Speaking at a GIMPA Law Students Association Peace Through Democracy forum on Wednesday, he described the task force as “untried and untested” for a national election.

“So far as I’m concerned, this police administration and NESTF have not been tested when it comes to national elections,” he stated.

While acknowledging recent successes, such as the Assin North by-election, Dr Agordzo cautioned that national elections are a different challenge altogether.

“We cannot assume that the strategies used in by-elections will work at scale. We need to prepare rigorously,” he said.

He also criticized the lack of regular communication from the NESTF. “The IGP alone cannot carry the burden of public communication.

“Regional and district commanders must also step forward to engage the media and communities,” he advised.

Reflecting on past successes, Dr. Agordzo underscored the importance of stakeholder engagement and trust-building.

“In 2016, we engaged all stakeholders—political parties, youth groups, religious bodies, and more—well in advance. This built confidence and clarified expectations. Are we doing the same now?” he questioned.

He further called for a revision of the Representation of the People’s Law, specifically Section 42, which requires the Attorney General’s consent for election-related prosecutions.

“This law perpetuates impunity because the Attorney General is unlikely to prosecute their own people. This must change,” he argued.

Dr. Agordzo concluded with a stark warning about public sentiment.

“Citizens are more aware and poised to stand up to threats this time. If we fail to prepare adequately, the consequences could be dire,” he cautioned.

Four Ghanaian soldiers on a peacekeeping mission in Lebanon were injured when a rocket, likely fired by non-state actors, struck their base, UNP 5-42, in the village of Ramyah on Tuesday.

The United Nations peacekeeping agency in southern Lebanon confirmed that this was one of three attacks on its troops and facilities on that day.

The rocket hit the base near the Israeli border, injuring four Ghanaian soldiers. Three of the injured soldiers required hospital treatment, although the severity of their injuries remains unknown.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has confirmed that the soldiers are currently receiving medical care.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), engaged in a ground invasion of southern Lebanon against Hezbollah, attributed the rocket fire to the Lebanese armed group. However, Hezbollah has yet to comment on the incident.

The rocket was reportedly fired from an unknown location and was intended for an IDF position but fell short, landing within the Ghana Battalion’s area at UNP 5-42.

The explosion caused damage to the washroom and troop accommodations at the base, where the injured soldiers were stationed.

UNIFIL has confirmed that three of the injured soldiers were transferred to a hospital in Tyre for treatment.

In addition to this incident, five rockets struck the UNIFIL Sector West Headquarters in Shama, causing significant damage to the maintenance workshop. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported from that attack.

As Ghana gears up for its December 7 elections, the Police Planning Officer at the UN Mission Support for Justice Reform, ACP Dr Benjamin Agordzo, has urged stakeholders to pay attention to critical risks that could undermine the process.

Speaking at a forum organised by the GIMPA Law Students Association on Wednesday, he identified areas requiring vigilance to ensure peaceful and credible elections.

Dr Agordzo warned against complacency, emphasizing that the strategies used for by-elections, such as Assin North, cannot simply be scaled for a nationwide poll.

“We may pride ourselves on success in Assin North, but we don’t have the luxury of saturating the entire country with police. National elections require a completely different approach,” he explained.

He also raised concerns about the role of the National Security SWAT team, describing it as unconstitutional.

“The Constitution, in Article 202, states that no police service should be created unless by an Act of Parliament. So, where did the National SWAT come from?

“Their orientation and training lean towards a particular regime, and deploying them will not serve the cause of peace,” Dr. Agordzo argued.

Further, he highlighted the lack of proactive engagement with civil society organizations (CSOs).

“If you want peace, include CSOs and think tanks in the planning process from the start. Developing a blueprint before engaging them is counterproductive,” he remarked.

Dr. Agordzo stressed the importance of regular interaction between the National Election Security Task Force (NESTF) and the public, particularly through regional and district commanders.

“The IGP cannot be the sole voice. Commanders at all levels should engage with the media to build trust and clarify the task force’s strategies,” he advised.

As a final note, Dr Agordzo stated the need for a clear deployment strategy and warned against last-minute preparations.

“Election security is about trust. Stakeholders must feel included, and citizens must trust the process. Anything short of that endangers the peace we all want,” he said.

Developing countries financial ask at COP29 is a ‘do or die’ affair – Dr Antwi https://www.myjoyonline.com/developing-countries-financial-ask-at-cop29-is-a-do-or-die-affair-dr-antwi/ https://www.myjoyonline.com/developing-countries-financial-ask-at-cop29-is-a-do-or-die-affair-dr-antwi/#respond Thu, 21 Nov 2024 05:47:42 +0000 https://www.myjoyonline.com/?p=10032642351 Ghana and the rest of developing countries demand for US$1.3 trillion per year from western countries to live with climate crisis impacts and to take actions to reduce all forms of emission is a “do or die” affair.]]>

Ghana and the rest of the developing countries demand $1.3 trillion per year from Western countries to live with climate crisis impacts and to take actions to reduce all forms of emission is a “do or die” affair.

Under the New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance (NCQG), the figure proposed seeks to accelerate the achievement of climate actions linked to Article Two of the Paris Agreement.

Dr Antwi-Boasiako Amoah, the Acting Director in charge of Climate Vulnerability and Adaptation at the Climate Change Department of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) told the Ghana News Agency at the ongoing global talks that a text covering the request had not yet been negotiated.

The 29th Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP29), christened the “Finance COP29, just began its second week of discussion which opens today in Baku Azerbaijan.

He said, “We spent the whole week trying to go over the things that we have gone through all these two years. The main objective of this COP is to have a decision that is going to take us forward, starting from 2025 to implement climate finance as a replacement of the $100 billion goal that we already had”. That was promised by developed countries in Copenhagen.

Per the procedure of the COP, Dr Amoah explained that every issue must have a text, which technical representatives of countries often called negotiators discuss line by line, agree and then adopt.

Dr Amoah said the issue under discussion was the definition of climate finance, “When we say climate finance from developed countries does it mean aid, grant or other funds that come to developing countries that do not specifically support climate change.”

“And this is very important for us developing countries because we have been duped before. Where funds that are not climate-related are branded as climate finance. This has been accounted for as part of the $100 billion.”

Dr Amoah noted developing countries were proposing that the new scheme must agree on what constitutes climate finance, the quantum of funds and the contributors.

“People are saying that at this moment, climate financing cannot be the sole burden of developed countries and therefore, the base must be widened up,” he said.

“However, under the Paris Agreement, where it says developed country parties are supposed to provide climate finance for developing countries to address their climate needs.”

Dr Amoah said the developing countries wanted the funding to be public climate finance, not loans, not other instruments like loans that would increase their debt burdens.

The effects of climate change, such as rising temperatures and changing rainfall patterns, are already being felt in sectors such as Agriculture, Coastal and Urban areas in Ghana.

Agriculture, which is a vital sector of the economy, is particularly susceptible to these changes. Decreased rainfall and prolonged droughts have led to lower crop yields, jeopardizing food security for many Ghanaians.

Climate variability and change are wreaking havoc on Ghana’s agriculture, crops, livestock, and fisheries sectors, with late-onset and early cessation of rainfall, droughts/dry spells, and floods of varying magnitudes and frequency.

The national economy stands to suffer from the impacts of climate change because it is dependent on climate-sensitive sectors, most especially agriculture.

Promoting adaptation and mitigation strategies is crucial for building resilience among smallholders and improving livelihoods at the local level, as some smallholder farmers engage in unsustainable agricultural systems contributing to the impact of climate variability and change.

Emmanuel Attah, the Dormaa West District Director of the National Centre for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Bono Region, has advised the public to be alert and report suspicious characters to the security services, ahead of the December 7 polls.

He said violent extremism and terrorism are common nowadays, hence the need for everybody to remain watchful and also endeavour to crosscheck or verify their sources before they spread any information.

Mr Attah gave the advice when speaking at a meeting on the European Union (EU) funded “Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism” (PCVE) programme, being implemented by the NCCE and held at Nkrankwanta.

It was attended by representatives of political parties, youth groups, religious leaders, security services and traditional authorities.

Mr Attah said extremist groups and individuals used misinformation and disinformation in their operations, saying, they normally targeted and engaged the unemployed youth for their unscrupulous activists.

“They also exploit weaknesses in the economic conditions of the countries, bribery and all forms of inducement targeting the vulnerable for radicalism,” he stated.

Touching on the December 7, polls, Mr Attah said the 1992 Constitution required that every registered, but eligible voter cast their ballot on December 7, and advised the people not to resort into political violence as a means of “electing our leaders.”

He said political violence undermined or compromised national security, and thereby disturbed relative peace and stability.

Superintendent Prince Asante, the Dormaa West District Police Commander, urged the people to support the police to maintain law and order before, during and after the General Elections.

“Section 70 of the criminal code stipulates that whoever intentionally and unlawfully causes harm to anybody shall be guilty of first-degree felony offence,” he stated and urged the people to report trouble makers to the police.

Nana Amoasi VII, Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), has called on the government to act swiftly to prevent an impending power shutdown as three significant power plants face possible closure due to unpaid debts.

The concern stems from a $259 million debt owed by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), which the government has yet to clear.

This information was disclosed by Dr. Elikplim Apetorgbor, CEO of the Independent Power Producers (IPP), during an interview with Citi Business News on Tuesday, 19th November.

Dr. Apetorgbor’s comments come shortly after President Akufo-Addo inaugurated the Bridge Power Project, a new initiative aimed at alleviating energy shortages in the country.

The inauguration of this project highlights the importance of maintaining a stable power supply in Ghana’s energy sector.

In an interview with Citi FM on Wednesday, Nana Amoasi VII stressed the urgency of the situation, urging the government to address the matter without delay to avoid a potential power crisis.

“The bird whispered to us at the IES that they intend to take such a step. There is a fear that if they don’t act now, they won’t have the leverage or that audacity to convince the next government to pay them, and so they are venting out their frustration.”

“I believe that they will make do their word judging from where Asogli took us from. We never believed that any IPP would shut down for the second time. Asogli did as of the 8th of October.”

“…We believe strongly that they will make do their word and that government must take them seriously and act now to avert any [power shutdown],” he said.

A 26-year-old house help is before the Bekwai Circuit Court for allegedly pouring acid on a Senior High School leaver.

Ernest Agyei has denied causing harm to Benjamin Asante.

He was granted a GH¢50,000.00 bail with two sureties to reappear on December 17, 2024.

Police Chief Inspector Christian Amartey, substituting the old charge sheet with a new one, had earlier told the Court presided over by Isaac Apeatu that Asante, the victim, was also the complainant and a former student of Yamfo Anglican Secondary School near Sunyani.

Chief Inspector Amartey said the victim was a resident of Trede as Agyei, the accused person, was a house help resident at Pakyi No 2.

The prosecution said on December 22, 2021, the complainant’s brother Francis Agyei invited the complainant to assist him in cleaning tiles with acid.

Agyei, who is the house help, joined in the cleaning with one Godfred Kwadwo Tawiah, a friend to the accused person.

In the course of the cleaning, the accused person and Tawiah argued, he told the Court.

The Court heard that later, the accused person or Agyei went to the complainant and asked him to see what his friend (Tawiah) had done to him.

The complainant told Agyei that, he would not — interfere in matters between him and Tawiah.

Chief Inspector Amartey said the complainant told him that, he would have done the same if it were to be him which Agyei became offended and rained insults on Asante.

This resulted in an exchange of words between them. Agyei then picked a quantity of acid in a container they were working with and spread same on Asante, the complainant, the Prosecution said.

Chief Inspector Amartey said Asante was rushed to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and was admitted for three months.

He said on June 20, 2022, a complaint was made to the Police, leading to the arrest of Agyei on October 09, 2022.

The Prosecution said after the investigation, Agyei was charged and put before the Court.

A coalition of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) has called on President Nana Addo Dunkwa Akufo Addo to sign the Anti-Witchcraft Accusations Bill (AWAB) into law.

The NGOs include Sanneh Institute, ActionAid Ghana, Amnesty International (AI) Ghana,

Oxfam in Ghana, Songtaba Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom Ghana,

Crossroads International, Ghana Somubie, International Alliance Against Witch Hunts and LAWA Ghana.

In a press conference organised by AI in Accra Rev. Professor John Azumah, Convener of the Coalition said, “Signing the AWAB would enhance the protection of human rights which will also align Ghana with international human rights obligations.”

He said Ghana was the only country in the world with witch camps, “signing the bill will demonstrate the country’s commitment to eradicating all forms of gender-based violence and discrimination.”

Rev. Azumah explained that the Anti-Witchcraft bill passed was in consultation with various stakeholders such as the Attorney General’s, Commission of Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).

“We are joining our voices to CHRAJ, and other reputable national and international bodies to call on the president to sign the bill into law.”

He said, “As a Coalition, they urge the President of the Republic to urgently assent the AWCAB that was unanimously passed by Parliament in July 2023 to protect vulnerable Ghanaian citizens, widows, mothers, grandmothers, sisters etc.”

“We cannot accept that the President’s failure to sign the bill is the last word on this critical issue.”

“Those victims have no voice and have no one within their families and communities to stand up for them, the state remains their only hope.”

“We believe that the accusations and witch-hunting are the root causes of the untold suffering of the victims.”

He said, “The practice of witch-hunting and witchcraft accusations was harmful and mere accusations break up families, destroy lives and livelihoods, and serve as a generational sentence of stigma and suspicion on families.”

Genevieve Partington, Country Director of AI Ghana said in many parts of the country, especially in the rural communities, elderly women were unfairly targeted and accused of witchcraft.

She said those accusations often stemmed from deep-seated superstitions and cultural beliefs that had been years.

She said, “Once labelled as witches, these women have been physically abused and even death at the hands of vigilante justice.”

She said, “Witchcraft accusations continued to tear society apart, perpetuating gender-based violence and denying women their fundamental rights to dignity, security, and equality.”

Isaac Asiedu-Odei, Head of Public Relations, GETFund, announced this on Tuesday at the National Education Week in Accra.

The event was on the theme “The Education Transformation Agenda: Evidence From 2017.”

He said the government was constructing five training centres for the Commission for Technical, Vocational Education and Training.

The contracts were signed in September 2018 and work on two of the projects—Pakyi number one and Anyinam is nearing full completion and handing over.

Two more sites, namely Akomadan and Assin Jakai, are at various stages of completion.

Mr Asiedu-Odei said each of the five TVET Centres was a state-of-the-art complex, comprising fully equipped classrooms, laboratories, workshops, and staffrooms.

On scholarships, he said the Fund had increased in local scholarships from over 300 in 2016 to 5,026 in 2023/2024.

The Head of Public Relations said GETFund had in the past 15 years supported scholars to pursue various programmes at both local and foreign institutions.

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has called on its customers to promptly pay their water bills to enhance the smooth operations of the company.

Theophilus Tawiah Collins, the Ashanti North Regional Chief Manager of the GWCL who made the call, said the non-payment of the water bills was impeding the operations of the company in the region.

Speaking at a customer service week celebration at Kronum, in the Sumae Municipality, he said payments of water bills remained discouraging despite intensified public education.

Customers in the Ashanti North Region, owe the company over GH¢40 million, Mr Tawiah disclosed.

He explained that besides the several collection points, customers could also pay their bills through the use of mobile money apps.

The theme for this year’s celebration was, “Customer service and its critical importance to our mission.”

Customer Service Week is an international celebration, which takes place in October every year to appreciate the importance of customer service, the people who serve and support customers daily to improve upon the mutual relationship that exists between the organization and their customers.

The celebration of customer service week started in 1987 in the United States of America and since then, the whole world has embraced it, making it an annual international event.

Mr. Tawiah explained that providing potable water for the citizenry was becoming expensive due to the current economic challenges, adding that, the company spent huge sums of money on importing chemicals, equipment, and spares, as well as paying huge electricity bills to enable it to provide potable water.

“The only source of income to maintain our infrastructure and equipment is the water bills that we pay.

The GWCL does not receive any money from the government to support our operations.

This is why we encourage you our customers to pay your bills promptly to enable the company to provide potable water to the citizenry,” he noted.

To retrieve the excess GH¢40 million arrears, the Regional Chief Manager, noted that the Company had begun massive disconnections exercise throughout the entire region till the end of 2024.

Mr. Tawiah hinted that the company was facing paper bills, saying that “the process will continue and by December no customer will receive a paper bill,” he said.

Ten customers in the area were given awards for the prompt payment of their bills.

Samuel Kyei Boateng, Customer Care Assistant (Meter reader), Nketiah District in the Ashanti North Region was awarded for his exceptional performance in operations as the Best Staff in the district.

Head of Environment and Climate, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Dr Abdul Razak Saeed, says the transition to greener practices requires deeper research-informed insights for sustainable practices.

He said the research into green transition must unearth the possible pitfalls and opportunities on how Ghana’s Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) could adopt sustainable methods and resources in their production processes.

Dr Razak Saeed was speaking at the stakeholder validation workshop on Greening MSME production with a focus on logistics and packaging.

It was to further empower local MSMEs which play a vital role in several African economies, including Ghana, in applying environmental considerations in their business operations for sustainable growth and integration into the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)

The Head of Environment and Climate said Ghanaian MSMEs by adopting sustainable methods and efficiency, could enhance their economies of scale, and competitiveness, and increase access to wider, premium, and international markets.

He said sustainable practices could enhance their premium and international market competitiveness by harnessing the benefits of AfCFTA.

“By charting this greening production trajectory with MSMEs, we will further support AfCFTA’s potential of enhanced economic growth projected to add around $450 billion to African economies by 2035 and to lift 30 million people out of extreme poverty,” he said.

He said UNDP was therefore leveraging its technical expertise and networks of practitioners and stakeholders to support MSMEs, especially women and youth-led, in greening their businesses to fully harness the potential of the AfCFTA agreement.

Dr Razak-Saeed emphasised that Ghanaian MSMEs pursuing green initiatives would further meet the growing demands of a growing population that was becoming increasingly conscious of the environmental impact of their consumption choices.

Mr. Jacob Gyamfi-Aidsoo, Senior Advisor, AfCFTA, urged MSMEs and businesses intended to export to the European market to have green credentials.

He said the green credentials could be achieved by incorporating a sustainability report to meet the demand of sustainably conscious customers in the European and global markets.

Dr Martin Akogti, Deputy Director and researcher at the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA) entreated all MSMEs to prioritise quality management and sustainable packaging, as many consumers were now environmentally conscious and willing to pay higher prices for sustainable products.

He said GEPA was looking forward to deepening its partnerships with UNDP in various value chains to continue to grow the export sector and drive economic growth and job creation.

Kathleen Addy, Chairperson, of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has cautioned Ghanaians about the information they receive and share, especially with the upcoming December elections, to ensure a peaceful and informed voting process.

She said that combating misinformation and disinformation was crucial to maintaining peace and democracy in Ghana, especially ahead of the December elections.

Ms. Addy gave the caution during an interview at a two-day workshop organized by the Commission in collaboration with the French Embassy.

The workshop aimed to equip NCCE staff with the skills to identify and address misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech

It was on the theme: “Well Informed Citizens for Election 2024: A Civic Education Initiative on Combating Mis/Disinformation and Hate Speech.”

Ms Addy said curbing the spread of misinformation and disinformation, particularly during the period of the election, was crucial in sustaining the peace that Ghanaians had enjoyed over the past 30 years.

To achieve that, she said, it would require commitment, self-discipline, and conscious efforts from all citizens, restraining themselves from sharing information that had the potential to cause mayhem.

“…look, maybe it’s not everybody who is in a position to take the extra steps to fact-check. As you are scrolling through your feed, you may not have the time or the desire to now go and fact-check, but if there is something like that, that kind of information drops in your feed, do not share,” she said.

“If we all make a conscious effort not to share insightful information, hateful information, doubtful information, information that looks like it is infringing on other people’s rights, it is information that is creating problems, building fear, and creating panic amongst people, let’s all commit to not sharing that information.

“That step alone, that individual step alone will go a long way to solve this problem that we are facing… Let us be more circumspect, let us be more thoughtful and stop sharing information that will not do us any good,” she said.

Ms Addy expressed concern about the canker on the work of the NCCE, explaining that as an institution whose basic duty was to inform the public, misinformation and disinformation was threatening its work.

The workshop, she said, was therefore timely as it would equip the staff of the commission with relevant tools necessary to fight misinformation and disinformation.

Ms. Christine Battesi, Political Counsellor at the French Embassy, noted that misinformation, disinformation and hate speech were major obstacles to the effective operation of democracy.

Although not new, she said, the situation had taken a new turn with the advent of social media.

“Today, information and misinformation circulate very quickly, and it is very easy to launch fake news campaigns, often anonymously,” she said.

Ms. Battesi stressed the need for heightened citizen’s awareness to identify and tackle the canker.

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has engaged political youth activists in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region to foster peace, tolerance and prevent all forms of violence ahead of the December polls,

The political activists, drawn from various political parties including the New Patriotic Party (NPP), National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the People’s National Congress (PNC), among others, were taken through key topics, including the role of youth in promoting peace, interfaith tolerance, and identifying and countering misinformation.

The engagement formed part of the European Union-sponsored project “Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism (PCVE),” which the Commission is implementing.

In his welcome address, Abdulai Abdul-Mugis, the East Mamprusi Municipal Director of the NCCE, indicated that the initiative was part of a broader effort to build the resilience of the youth against violent extremism and create a peaceful atmosphere ahead of the elections.

He explained that many political youth activists were often at the forefront of election-related violence and educating them on peaceful coexistence and tolerance was pivotal to shaping Ghana’s political landscape.

“With terrorism and violent extremism also becoming more prevalent in the West African sub-region, particularly in neighbouring Burkina Faso and Mali, Ghana faces increasing security threats, and the youth must not allow themselves to be used by these extremists to cause havoc,” he stated.

Mr Mugis noted that the country had maintained a strong track record of peaceful elections, with successful transitions of power in 2000, 2008, 2016, and 2020, and all stakeholders must ensure that the trend continued to safeguard the peace of the country.

Mr Gariba Sato, the Deputy Regional Director of NCCE, emphasised that as the 2024 elections drew closer, it was critical to ensure that the peace Ghana was enjoying was not disrupted, and the role of the youth activists in ensuring this was paramount.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Cephas Arthur, Divisional Commander of the East Mamprusi Municipality, said while political parties may sometimes exploit their vulnerabilities, especially due to unemployment, such exploitation could be harnessed by extremist groups to propagate violent ideologies.

He urged the youth to be vigilant and guard themselves against being used by anybody to disturb the peace of the country, especially in the upcoming elections.

Reverend Michael Gumah, Chairman of the East Mamprusi Municipal Inter-Party Dialogue Committee, indicated that by educating the political activists on the dangers of violent extremism and the importance of peaceful elections, he was of the firm belief that they could lead by example and encourage their peers to reject violence.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday swore in five new ambassadors at the Jubilee House in Accra.

The new envoys, all seasoned diplomats, include Matilda Aku Alomatu Osei-Agyeman (Ambassador to Austria), Vivian Kafui Akua Asempapa (Ambassador to Senegal), Regina Appiah-Sam (Ambassador to Spain), McArios Akanbeanab Akanbong (Ambassador to Iran), and Dr Senalor Kwabla Yawlui (Ambassador to Sierra Leone).

In his remarks, President Akufo-Addo emphasized that their appointments were critical to Ghana’s diplomatic efforts, especially during challenging global circumstances.

He noted that the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war had underscored the need for international cooperation and diplomatic engagement.

“Your postings have come at a critical juncture in global affairs and Ghana’s development journey,” the President stated.

The President called on the envoys to promote Ghana’s economic revitalisation programme, the Ghana CARES ‘Obaatanpa’ initiative, which focuses on sectors like agriculture, ICT, and job creation.

He urged them to attract foreign investments aligned with these objectives and to contribute to the nation’s sustainable growth.

Reflecting on Ghana’s recent diplomatic achievements, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the country’s full membership in La Francophonie and the election of Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey as the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.

These milestones, he said, reinforced Ghana’s role as a diplomatic bridge between Anglophone and Francophone nations in Africa.

The President also reminded the ambassadors of their dual responsibilities: to represent Ghana’s interests abroad and to engage with the diaspora in contributing to national development.

He urged them to work closely with Foreign Service officers, whom he described as “the backbone of Ghana’s diplomatic missions,” and stressed the importance of diplomacy as a tool for building bridges and fostering international partnerships.

President Akufo-Addo reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections in December, underscoring the importance of maintaining Ghana’s democratic credentials.

He urged the envoys to uphold the values of peace, integrity, and democratic governance in their missions abroad.

“You are the face of Ghana to the world. Carry out your duties with professionalism and integrity, and let your efforts bring honor to our nation,” he said.

Ambassador Vivian Asempapa, speaking on behalf of her colleagues, expressed gratitude to President Akufo-Addo for the appointments and the trust placed in them.

She assured the President that they would work diligently to enhance Ghana’s active role in international affairs and advocate for the country’s interests.

“Mr. President, we accept your charge, which we pledge to fulfill with dignity, integrity, and diligence,” she stated.

“Guided by the vision of our forebears, we commit to upholding and defending the principles of democracy, unity, and progress that have always defined our nation,” she added.

The Ghana Police Service has urged Ghanaians to go about their usual activities before, during, and after the upcoming elections without any fear.

“We want to assure you that the elections will be very peaceful because of the measures put in place. Ghanaians, feel free and live your lives. We have your back,” Dr George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police said.

Speaking during a stakeholder engagement with the National Security Taskforce, Dr. Dampare stated that elections are a process, not an event, and disclosed that more than two years of planning had gone into ensuring security for the election.

He introduced a comprehensive 5,400-page security document, dubbed “the master blueprint,” which covered all aspects of security and election management, with a vision for Ghana’s future over the next 30 years.

The document aims to maintain peace and stability.

Dr. Dampare pointed out that these preparations had already led to peaceful elections at various levels, including during campaigns.

He also outlined new protocols for coalition centres, where only authorized stakeholders, such as candidates, media, and observers, would have access to ensure a transparent ballot counting process.

The IGP called for collaboration among all stakeholders to make the elections peaceful and successful to bring pride to Ghana and Africa.

He also warned potential troublemakers that the police would take decisive action against anyone attempting to disrupt the election process.

Reverend Dr. Primerose Degbe of the Civil Forum, a coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), praised the security taskforce for its effective management of past elections, including district and by-elections.

He expressed confidence that the security forces were well-prepared to ensure the upcoming elections was peaceful and secure.

U.S. regulators want a federal judge to break up Google to prevent the company from continuing to squash competition through its dominant search engine after a court found it had maintained an abusive monopoly over the past decade.

The proposed breakup floated in a 23-page document filed late Wednesday by the U.S. Justice Department calls for Google to sell its industry-leading Chrome web browser and impose restrictions designed to prevent its Android smartphone software from favouring its search engine.

The recommended penalties underscore how severely regulators operating under President Joe Biden believe Google should be punished following an August ruling by U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta that branded Google as a monopolist.

The Justice Department decision-makers who will inherit the case after President-elect Donald Trump takes office next year might not be as strident.

The Washington, D.C. court hearings on Google’s punishment are scheduled to begin in April and Mehta is aiming to issue his final decision before Labor Day.

If Mehta embraces the Justice Department’s recommendations, Google will almost certainly appeal the punishments, prolonging a legal tussle that has dragged on for more than four years.

Besides seeking a Chrome spinoff and corralling of the Android software, the Justice Department wants the judge to ban Google from forging multibillion-dollar deals to lock in its dominant search engine as the default option on Apple’s iPhone and other devices.

Regulators also want Google to share data it collects from people’s queries with its rivals, giving them a better chance at competing with the tech giant.

The measures, if they are ordered, threaten to upend a business expected to generate more than $300 billion in revenue this year — a moneymaking machine that has given Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc.

“The playing field is not level because of Google’s conduct, and Google’s quality reflects the ill-gotten gains of an advantage illegally acquired,” the Justice Department asserted in its recommendations. “The remedy must close this gap and deprive Google of these advantages.”

It’s still possible that the Justice Department could ease off attempts to break up Google, especially if Trump takes the widely expected step of replacing Jonathan Kanter, who was appointed by Biden to oversee the agency’s antitrust division.

Although the case targeting Google was originally filed during the final months of Trump’s first term in office, Kanter oversaw the high-profile trial that culminated in Mehta’s ruling against Google. Working in tandem with Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan, Kanter took a get-tough stance against Big Tech that triggered other attempted crackdowns on industry powerhouses such as Apple and discouraged business deals from getting done during the past four years.

Trump recently expressed concerns that a breakup might destroy Google but didn’t elaborate on the alternative penalties he might have in mind. “What you can do without breaking it up is make sure it’s more fair,” Trump said last month. Matt Gaetz, the former Republican congressman that Trump nominated to be the next U.S. Attorney General, has previously called for the breakup of Big Tech companies.

Gaetz, a firebrand for Trump, faces a tough confirmation hearing.

This latest filing gave Kanter and his team a final chance to spell out measures that they believe are needed to restore competition in search. It comes six weeks after Justice first floated the idea of a breakup in a preliminary outline of potential penalties.

But Kanter’s proposal is already raising questions about whether regulators seek to impose controls that extend beyond the issues covered in last year’s trial, and — by extension — Mehta’s ruling.

Banning the default search deals that Google now pays more than $26 billion annually to maintain was one of the main practices that troubled Mehta in his ruling.

It’s less clear whether the judge will embrace the Justice Department’s contention that Chrome needs to be spun out of Google and Android should be unbundled from the company’s other services.

Trying to break up Google harks back to a similar punishment initially imposed on Microsoft a quarter century ago following another major antitrust trial that culminated in a federal judge deciding the software maker had illegally used his Windows operating system for PCs to stifle competition.

However, an appeals court overturned an order that would have broken up Microsoft, a precedent many experts believe will make Mehta reluctant to go down a similar road with the Google case.

In the corridors of Ridge Hospital, Lisa Laryea’s family gathers around a phone, watching her faint smile from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

It is the only glimpse of the 10-year-old they have had in days.

Lisa, who once filled her home with laughter and light, is now battling stage 4 leukaemia, a life-threatening cancer of the blood and bone marrow.

Lisa, a student of Lerato Preparatory and JHS in Lartebiokorshie, was known for her love of books and her dream of becoming a paediatrician. But her vibrant life slowed on October 31, 2024, when what seemed like a simple cold and headache escalated into the unimaginable.

“Lisa went for career day at school, and then my mother was called by the school authority that Lisa was complaining of body pains.

“On 1st November 1, 2024, she was taken to the hospital for treatment for common cold and malaria, but upon close examination by the physicians, we were told they were going to admit her.”

Georgia Golightly Thompson further told JoyNews’ Emmanuel Dzivenu, “Later, I was called for counselling at the hospital. I was very alarmed, and I was devastated when the news was broken to me that Lisa had been diagnosed with stage 4 leukaemia, which happens to be cancer of the blood and bone marrow.”

Her condition requires urgent treatment, including a bone marrow transplant in South Africa. The cost? A staggering $100,000. For Lisa’s family, raising this amount seemed impossible.

“I had started selling my assets, and it wasn’t getting anywhere. I had sold my little plot of land I had, but it still didn’t amount to anything,” Lisa’s mom indicated.

Desperation drove the family to social media, where they shared Lisa’s story in a heartfelt plea for help. The post quickly went viral, and the family’s prayers were answered when it reached the CEO of Engineers & Planners and Dzata Cement, Ibrahim Mahama.

Known for his philanthropic efforts, Mr. Mahama has pledged to cover the entire cost of Lisa’s treatment, including airfare for Lisa, her mother, and auntie, as well as a medical doctor to South Africa.

Speaking on his behalf, Rafik Mahama, a special aide to Ibrahim Mahama, said, “Mr. Ibrahim Mahama doesn’t look at cost when it comes to saving somebody’s life. He gives those instructions that whatever it takes to save the person’s life, you go ahead and do it.

“So that’s why we didn’t look at the cost of it but made sure we got Lisa to South Africa and for her to go through the procedure. We have the doctors on standby and the nurse as well, and they’re even in touch with the family.”

For Georgia and the rest of Lisa’s family, the relief was overwhelming.

Lisa’s aunt, who had tirelessly supported the family throughout this ordeal, expressed her gratitude as well.

Lisa is expected to leave for South Africa on Thursday, November 21, 2024. The family is optimistic that this is the turning point in their young daughter’s battle against cancer.

However, Lisa’s journey is far from over, but her family is no longer fighting alone. Thanks to one man’s compassion, Lisa now has hope – a chance to survive, thrive, and one day become the paediatrician she dreams of being.

Police Planning Officer at the UN Mission Support for Justice Reform, ACP Dr Benjamin Agordzo, says Ghana can conduct peaceful elections without deploying military personnel to polling stations.

Speaking at the Peace Through Democracy forum organised by the GIMPA Law Students Association on Wednesday, he stated that strategic policing, dialogue, and trust-building are sufficient to maintain security during elections.

Reflecting on the 2016 elections, widely regarded as one of the most peaceful in Ghana’s Fourth Republic, Dr Agordzo stated, “Not even a fly was reported to have died during the 2016 elections.”

He attributed this to deliberate efforts by the National Election Security Task Force (NESTF), which he said successfully employed a systematic dialogue approach with key stakeholders.

“The dialogue approach was adopted alongside law enforcement because we realised that a militant posture alone could not resolve crises,” he explained.

'We can ensure a peaceful election without the military' – Dr Agordzo

Stakeholders such as political parties, youth groups, religious bodies, and the media were engaged in open discussions that helped build confidence and clarify expectations.

Dr Agordzo revealed that in 2016, the NESTF avoided using military personnel at polling stations, instead relying solely on police officers trained specifically for the elections.

“We trained special police officers and deployed them to the borders with UN Police jackets and helmets. No military officer. I am emphasising this to say that we can do this election peacefully without deploying any military officer,” he declared.

He cautioned against the use of military personnel, citing incidents like Ayawaso West Wuogon and Techiman South, which he said are “still fresh on our minds.”

According to Dr. Agordzo, such deployments could undermine public trust and provoke unnecessary tension.

In his call for peaceful elections, Dr. Agordzo emphasized the importance of planning, trust-building, and avoiding excessive force.

“Let’s trust the police to handle this election professionally. Dialogue, education, and careful coordination will ensure we achieve peaceful elections without military intervention,” he concluded.

In the 2020 election, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) protested the results, describing them as “flawed” and alleging that state security forces were used to intimidate voters in their strongholds.

The National Election Security Taskforce (NESTF) reported that eight lives were lost during the general elections, with 61 recorded cases of electoral and post-electoral violence across the country, including six incidents involving gunshots.

Police Planning Officer at the UN Mission Support for Justice Reform, ACP Dr Benjamin Agordzo, has urged police officers to exercise restraint and professionalism during the 2024 general elections.

Speaking at the Peace Through Democracy forum organised by the GIMPA Law Students Association on Wednesday, he stated that police officers are not the ultimate authority at polling stations.

“We made it clear during the 2016 elections that a police officer is not the overall boss at the polling station,” Dr Agordzo said.

“He is working under the presiding officer.” This principle, he added, helped to maintain order and prevent unnecessary confrontations during the 2016 elections.

Dr Agordzo recounted efforts to educate officers ahead of the 2016 polls.

Police officers must avoid power trips at polling stations – Dr Agordzo

“We produced over 42,000 booklets for police officers, summarizing their roles and responsibilities at polling stations,” he said.

These materials served as quick reference guides to help officers stay focused on their duties.

He warned against the temptation for officers to throw their weight around, noting that such behaviour could lead to tensions with voters and other stakeholders.

“Citizens are more empowered and poised to stand up to threats this time,” he cautioned.

Dr Agordzo also called for regular interactions between the police and the media to build public trust.

“The EC is doing theirs, but what about the National Election Security Task Force?” he asked.

“We need to see regional and district commanders engaging with the media regularly.”

Reflecting on past successes, he reiterated the importance of maintaining professionalism and neutrality.

“In 2016, we proved that elections could be peaceful without intimidating voters,” he said.

“We can achieve the same in 2024 if we stick to the principles of trust, restraint, and inclusivity.”

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Addison, says the newly commissioned headquarters of the Central Bank will help enhance operational efficiency and strengthen Ghana’s standing as a leader in Africa’s financial ecosystem.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony of the new facility on Wednesday, Dr Addison said the new headquarters ‘The Bank Square’ was a testament to the Central Bank’s dedication to investing in Ghana’s future.

The Bank Square is a symbol of the nation’s progress, resilience – BoG Governor

“This new Head Office complex, called THE BANK SQUARE, is more than a physical structure. It is a national monument highlighting the symbolic representation of our strong commitment to the transformation of the Ghanaian economy.

It also highlights the central and pivotal role of the Bank of Ghana and how it is intertwined with the development and history of Ghana,” Dr Addison said.

He said the primary objective of the new headquarters was to streamline the bank’s activities by consolidating its multiple offices scattered across Accra.

The Bank Square is a symbol of the nation’s progress, resilience – BoG Governor

This centralisation, he noted, is crucial for fostering better coordination, communication, and cost-effectiveness in the bank’s operations.

The facility features four key components: the Amenity Pavilion, Urban Block, The Podium, and The Tower.

Over the past 67 years in operation, the core functions of the central bank have expanded, in terms of both scope and number of functions, following the fast-changing domestic economic landscape and increasing integration with the global financial architecture.

For example, the scale of issuing and redeeming currency in the 1950s pales in comparison to the same operation in today’s economy. The number of regulated financial institutions has increased from less than five individual institutions in 1957 to over 830 institutions and across many institutional categories presently.

Dr Addison lauded Sir David Adjaye, an internationally renowned architect, for the architectural ingenuity behind the Bank Square.

“By commissioning this product of the imagination of an internationally celebrated architect, Sir David Adjaye, a proud son of Ghana, we are boldly affirming our commitment to investing in the nation’s future. His architectural firm, Adjaye Associates, has created this enduring masterpiece—one designed to withstand the test of time and serve as a beacon of Ghana’s revitalization for generations to come,” Dr. Addison remarked.

Dr. Addison emphasised that Bank Square will significantly enhance the Central Bank’s operational efficiency, sustainability, and employee wellness.

“As one of Accra’s most significant modern civic landmarks, the Bank Square is not just physical structure but also a symbol of the nation’s progress and a commitment to fostering a resilient and sustainable economic future for Ghana,” he added.

The 2016 general election in Ghana is widely regarded as one of the most peaceful and well-organised in the country’s Fourth Republic.

According to ACP Dr Benjamin Agordzo, a Police Planning Officer at the UN Mission Support for Justice Reform, this achievement was no accident.

Speaking at the Peace Through Democracy forum organised by the GIMPA Law Students Association on Wednesday, he outlined deliberate strategies that contributed to the election’s success.

“The 2016 general election in Ghana remains, arguably, the most peaceful in the Fourth Republic,” Dr. Agordzo said.

“Not even a fly was reported to have died during the election.”

In the 2020 election, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) protested the results, describing them as “flawed” and alleging that state security forces were used to intimidate voters in their strongholds.

The National Election Security Taskforce (NESTF) reported that eight lives were lost during the 2020 general elections, with 61 recorded cases of electoral and post-electoral violence across the country, including six incidents involving gunshots.

Giving an insight into why the 2016 election had such a peaceful outcome, Dr Agordzo stated that it was the result of systematic dialogue with stakeholders and an inclusive planning process led by the National Election Security Task Force.

A key factor was the dialogical approach adopted by the Task Force.

“We realised that a militant posture alone could not resolve crises,” Dr Agordzo noted.

Dialogues were held with a wide range of groups, including political parties, youth groups, religious leaders, and civil society organisations.

One milestone was the Adaa Communiqué, where political parties publicly renounced violence and disassociated themselves from vigilante activities. The process was unprecedented in its scope.

“For the first time ever, systematic and well-coordinated meetings were held nationwide, involving the IGP and police leadership on one hand and stakeholders on the other,” Dr Agordzo said.

These sessions were marked by open and frank discussions, which helped to build trust and clarify issues that could otherwise cause mistrust during the elections.

Another innovation was the extensive use of literature to educate stakeholders on peaceful elections.

“We created over 5,000 election booklets for senior security officers and 42,000 copies for every police officer deployed on duty,” he revealed.

These materials clarified the roles of police officers, emphasizing that they were subordinate to the presiding officers at polling stations.

Dr. Agordzo also highlighted the role of community policing.

“We visited churches, mosques, and communities to engage directly with citizens,” he said.

This proactive engagement fostered trust and cooperation between the police and the public.

He praised the deployment strategy, which included special police officers stationed at border areas but excluded military personnel at polling stations.

“No military officer was deployed at any polling station in 2016,” he said, adding that this approach prevented unnecessary intimidation of voters.

Dr. Agordzo attributed the success of the 2016 elections to deliberate planning, inclusivity, and trust-building.

“It didn’t just happen. It was the result of deliberate efforts,” he stressed.

Police Planning Officer at the UN Mission Support for Justice Reform, ACP Dr Benjamin Agordzo, has called for the exclusion of the National Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) from Ghana’s 2024 general elections.

He described the unit as “illegal” and unnecessary.

Speaking at the Peace Through Democracy forum organised by the GIMPA Law Students Association on Wednesday, Dr Agordzo raised concerns about the legality and orientation of the SWAT unit under the National Security apparatus.

“According to the Constitution, apart from the Ghana Police Service, no other police service should be created unless by an Act of Parliament,” he stated.

“Where from the National SWAT? Who created it, and under what Act of Parliament?”

He described the unit’s existence as a constitutional violation and argued that its deployment in elections poses risks to peace and credibility.

Dr. Agordzo recalled the controversial role of SWAT in the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, which was marred by violence.

The by-election which was held on January 31, 2019, was marred by a shooting incident at the residence of Mr Kwasi Delali Brempong, the NDC candidate, which resulted in injuries to 18 persons. An observer at one of the polling stations was also assaulted.

“Ayawaso West Wuogon is still fresh in our minds,” he said.

“If we really need peace, we must advocate that the National SWAT is not deployed,” Dr Agordzo added.

He stated that election security should be the sole responsibility of the police, supported by specially trained officers when necessary.

“The orientation and training of the National SWAT are skewed towards serving a particular regime,” he said, warning that their involvement could undermine the neutrality of election security operations.

Dr Agordzo proposed alternative strategies, such as enhancing the capacity of the police and engaging with stakeholders early in the election process.

He also called for a clear distinction between strategies for by-elections and general elections.

“We don’t have the luxury of saturating security forces in a single constituency for national elections,” he said.

The senior police officer reiterated the need for inclusivity in election security planning. “

Civil society organizations and think tanks should be part of the National Election Security Task Force,” he argued. This, he said, would enhance transparency and ensure that diverse perspectives are considered.

In his concluding remarks, Dr. Agordzo urged authorities to avoid deploying the military at polling stations.

“Techiman South is too fresh on our minds,” he cautioned. “We can do this election peacefully without deploying any military officer.”

Ford cuts 800 jobs claiming weak demand for electric cars https://www.myjoyonline.com/ford-cuts-800-jobs-claiming-weak-demand-for-electric-cars/ https://www.myjoyonline.com/ford-cuts-800-jobs-claiming-weak-demand-for-electric-cars/#respond Thu, 21 Nov 2024 02:06:00 +0000 https://www.myjoyonline.com/?p=10032642283 Ford has announced it will cut 800 jobs in the UK over the next three years.]]>

Ford has announced it will cut 800 jobs in the UK over the next three years.

The move is part of a major restructuring programme, which will see 4,000 posts closed across Europe as a whole.

The company said it had to act because of difficult trading conditions, including intense competition and weak demand for electric vehicles.

However, the cuts will not affect its manufacturing sites in Dagenham and Halewood, or its logistics base in Southampton. Ford said it hoped to make the majority of job cuts through voluntary redundancy.

“Making this announcement isn’t something that anybody wants to do, and I appreciate it will have a very significant impact on our employees,” said Lisa Brankin, managing director of Ford of Britain and Ireland.

“It’s not the news anyone wants to hear at any time. So our aim is to try to deliver this through voluntary redundancy.”

Ford has 5,300 employees in the UK.

A government spokesperson told the BBC it has “asked the company to urgently share its full plans so we can help mitigate the impact in the UK”.

The restructuring plan will remove 15% of its workforce. The majority of them are expected to be in administrative or product development roles.

The company currently makes diesel engines for vans at its Dagenham factory in Essex.

It builds gearboxes in Halewood and is in the final stages of creating a major new facility for producing motors for electric vehicles on the site.

Both factories are being protected from the cuts, along with Ford’s transport operations division, which is based in Southampton.

However, six other sites across the UK could be affected, including a major research and development centre at Dunton in Essex, where it also has its UK headquarters and a giant parts distribution centre in Daventry.

This is the second round of cuts to hit Ford’s operations in Britain in less than two years. In March 2023 it said 1,300 jobs were to go, a fifth of its workforce, most of them at the Dunton site.

The latest announcement comes at a time when car manufacturers across Europe are struggling.

Among the issues they face are high energy costs, weaker-than-expected demand for electric cars and growing competition from Chinese manufacturers.

Many of the continent’s biggest names, including Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz and BMW have seen their profits tumble this year.

Volkswagen is even contemplating the closure of factories in Germany, a step that would be unprecedented.

“The automotive industry is going through a period of massive disruption at the moment,” explained Ms Brankin.

“We’ve got unprecedented competition, regulation and lots of economic headwinds”

Those pressures are hitting Ford at a difficult time. The carmaker is attempting to move away from its past as a mass manufacturer of cheap “runabouts”, and position itself as a more upmarket brand, focused on electric cars. Last year, it stopped making the Fiesta after nearly five decades.

In addition to the cuts in the UK, Ford will be shedding 2,900 jobs in Germany and another 300 in the rest of Europe.

Meanwhile in Britain, the government is coming under intense pressure from the car industry over rules designed to force them to build more electric vehicles. The issue is due to be discussed at a meeting between industry and ministers on Wednesday afternoon.

Under the so-called Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate, which came into force this year, at least 22% of cars sold must be classed as zero emission. If manufacturers fail to hit their quotas, they could face fines of up to £15,000 per car.

A number of carmakers are already struggling to meet their targets, although there are flexible mechanisms built into the rules which should allow them to avoid fines for the moment.

But the quota is due to rise to 28% next year, and to 33% in 2026 – being ramped up each year after that to hit 80% by 2030.

Manufacturers insist this is happening too fast. Although sales of new EVs are rising – with one in five cars sold in October being battery-powered, they say this is misleading.

They claim demand for electric cars simply isn’t high enough yet, forcing them to offer unsustainable discounts to meet their targets.

Some are calling for the government to water down the quotas, to give them more time.

Others say it needs to offer greater taxpayer-funded incentives for electric cars and to do more to reassure car buyers that enough charging infrastructure will be built.

But according to Vicky Read, chief executive of charging firm Charge UK a weakening of the mandate would be the wrong move.

“The government must hold its nerve and use the meeting to signal support for a policy that is evidently working,” she said.

A government spokesperson said it is “determined to work in close partnership with industry as we implement the 2030 transition deadline”.

A 43-year-old father was fatally shot by police in Las Vegas after he called 911 for help while fighting off an intruder in his home.

The family of Brandon Durham, including his 15-year-old daughter who was hiding in a nearby room when her father was killed, have asked for the officer to be fired.

Mr Durham’s teenage daughter said she was “disgusted” with Las Vegas police as they treated him like “the suspect” not “the victim”.

A lawyer for Alexander Bookman, the officer who shot Mr Durham, said he committed no crimes.

The incident last week brought police shootings back into the spotlight, occurring just days before the Justice Department opened an investigation into the death of Sonya Massey, who was fatally shot in July by an officer inside her home in Illinois.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said Mr Bookman, 26, had been placed on paid administrative leave while they conducted an internal review of the 12 November incident.

Mr Durham had called 911 to report that two people were shooting outside and were trying to break into his home, police said in a press statement.

Officers responding to the report found cars with broken windows outside.

They also noticed damage to the house and heard yelling from inside, police said, prompting Mr Bookman to kick down the front door to enter.

Body camera footage released by the police shows Mr Bookman walking through the home with his gun drawn while screaming and banging can be heard out of view.

Turning the corner of an L-shaped hallway, the officer finds a shirtless Mr Durham wrestling over a knife with a woman wearing a ski mask, later identified as 31-year-old Alejandra Boudreaux.

Mr Bookman yells, “Hey, drop the knife, drop the knife”, seconds before firing a shot hitting Mr Durham and sending him and Ms Boudreaux to the ground.

Mr Bookman then fires five more shots at Mr Durham and says “Put your hands up”, body-worn camera footage released by police showed.

Mr Durham was pronounced dead on the scene. Ms Boudreaux was arrested and charged with four counts, including home invasion with a deadly weapon.

“I am disgusted in how the Metropolitan Police told my father, after killing him, to stay down,” Mr Durham’s daughter told local news. “I’m disgusted that the Metropolitan Police will allow me to live fatherless for the rest of my life.”

The family’s attorney has asked for an immediate arrest warrant for Mr Bookman.

“Unlike a civil case, in which an individual’s negligence is at issue, criminal cases require proof of a person’s criminal intent,” David Roger, general counsel for the Las Vegas Police Protective Association, said in a statement to CNN.

“While Mr. Durham’s death is tragic, Officer Bookman was doing his job and did not intend to commit a crime.”

Citing a police report, local news outlets said Mr Durham and Ms Boudreaux were previously in a romantic relationship.

Assistant Sheriff Dori Koren said police did not find a gun on the scene, despite multiple reports of shots fired.

The similar details between Mr Durham’s death and that of Sonya Massey, the Illinois woman who was shot and killed by police in her home after calling for help, have renewed calls for police reform.

Ukraine is taking steps to address the challenges faced by African students whose education was disrupted by the ongoing war, according to Maksym Subkh, Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Representative for the Middle East and Africa.

In an interview, Mr. Subkh revealed that Ukraine has requested detailed information from African governments to identify and assist affected students individually.

“We want to reach out to all students, one at a time, and address their specific concerns,” he said.

While acknowledging that it may not yet be safe for all students to return to Ukraine, he noted that some provinces remain secure, making it possible for certain students to resume their studies.

Ukraine is particularly focused on helping medical students who are unable to continue their education online.

The government is actively exploring solutions to enable these students to complete their training.

A key concern, Mr. Subkh added, is the inability of students to receive their certificates, a challenge Ukraine is working tirelessly to resolve.

The Deputy Foreign Minister emphasised Ukraine’s commitment to supporting African students and ensuring they can continue their education despite the hardships caused by the conflict.

Ukraine has expressed strong support for Africa’s quest for reforms at the United Nations, calling for the continent to be granted two permanent seats on the UN Security Council.

Maksym Subkh, Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Representative for the Middle East and Africa, emphasized that Africa deserves greater representation in global decision-making platforms, including a place in the G20.

“Africa has come of age and must be accorded the representation it rightfully deserves,” Mr. Subkh said during an interview with Joy News’ in Kyiv.

The deputy minister affirmed Ukraine’s commitment to strengthening ties with Africa and highlighted the nation’s intention to return to peacekeeping efforts on the continent once the war with Russia concludes.

He also detailed the devastating impact of Russia’s aggression on Ukraine, revealing that 50% of the country’s power grid has been destroyed as part of the ongoing conflict.

Despite these challenges, Mr. Subkh reiterated Ukraine’s dedication to global partnerships and its belief in Africa’s pivotal role in shaping the future of international governance.

From danger to hope: How ‘Minefield Honey’ is transforming Ukraine’s devastated lands https://www.myjoyonline.com/from-danger-to-hope-how-minefield-honey-is-transforming-ukraines-devastated-lands/ https://www.myjoyonline.com/from-danger-to-hope-how-minefield-honey-is-transforming-ukraines-devastated-lands/#respond Thu, 21 Nov 2024 01:13:00 +0000 https://www.myjoyonline.com/?p=10032642264 The “Minefield Honey” initiative, created by Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Saatchi & Saatchi Ukraine in partnership with the agro-industrial company Kernel, is a testament to human ingenuity and resilience. ]]>

In a land where war has sown peril into the soil, the Ukrainian people have found a way to nurture hope—one drop of honey at a time.

Ukraine, one of the most heavily mined countries in the world, faces a staggering challenge: 174,000 square kilometres of land—fields, forests, and reservoirs—are riddled with deadly explosives.

These mines not only threaten lives but render vast swaths of land unusable for agriculture, crippling Ukraine’s food security and economy. Yet, out of this devastation, a groundbreaking project has emerged.

The “Minefield Honey” initiative, created by Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Saatchi & Saatchi Ukraine in partnership with the agro-industrial company Kernel, is a testament to human ingenuity and resilience.

The idea is as simple as it is extraordinary: use technology and nature to reclaim dangerous, mined agricultural fields.

Sowing Seeds of Hope

To avoid human contact with mines, drones are deployed to scatter a special mix of honey grasses across the hazardous fields.

These flowers, untouched by the lurking danger below, attract bees that safely collect nectar without triggering mines. The result is honey—pure, golden, and symbolic of Ukraine’s resolve.

But this project isn’t just about honey. Each jar of “Minefield Honey” carries a powerful message to the world: the urgent need for demining efforts.

Ukrainian diplomats will use the honey as a conversation starter, gifting it to global leaders and public figures to raise awareness and funds for demining the ravaged land.

Uniting Innovation and Purpose

The initiative has garnered the support of the State Emergency Service, Dronarium Ukraine, and the Union of Beekeepers of Ukraine.

It even features uniquely designed hives modelled after mine hazard warning signs—poignant reminders of the land’s plight.

This fusion of creativity and purpose underscores the project’s dual mission: to keep the fields productive while rallying international support for demining.

Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasizes the project’s strategic impact:
“This initiative allows us to spotlight the devastation caused by Russian mining and mobilise resources to restore safety and productivity to our land. Military diplomacy is about turning every challenge into an opportunity for progress.”

A Beacon of Resilience

The commitment of partners like Kernel further amplifies the project’s potential. “War has left hundreds of thousands of hectares of farmland unusable,” shares Kateryna Spivakova, Kernel’s Director of Communications.

“But through this life-affirming project, we’re showing that even in the darkest times, we believe in the recovery and strength of our homeland.”

A Future Reimagined

The “Minefield Honey” project is still in its early stages, with field tests already conducted and full-scale implementation set for spring 2024.

Each step forward attracts more attention and support from the global community, paving the way for change.

In the face of destruction, Ukraine has chosen creation.

“Minefield Honey” is more than a product—it is a testament to resilience, ingenuity, and hope. Every jar tells a story of a nation determined to heal its land and its people, proving that even amidst danger, life can flourish.

The Western Rust has premiered in Poland, three years after cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was accidentally shot and killed on set in New Mexico.

Organisers of Poland’s Camerimage International Film Festival said the screening was a tribute to the 42-year-old Ukrainian-born cinematographer, who was a fan of the event and had attended in the past.

The movie’s star Alec Baldwin was not invited and did not attend the premiere.

Writer and director Joel Souza, who was wounded in the shooting, told the BBC at the premiere that at one point he “couldn’t even conceive of ever being back on the set ever again, it just hurt too much”.

He said he changed his mind and decided to complete the film after speaking to Hutchins’ husband, Matt.

But the announcement that Camerimage in the northern Polish city of Torun was going to give the movie its international debut has been criticised by some prominent cinematographers in Hollywood for being disrespectful to Hutchins’ memory.

Hutchins’ mother, Olga Solovey, who is suing the production and Alec Baldwin in a civil action, didn’t attend either.

In a statement issued by her lawyer she said she regards the premiere as an attempt to profit from her daughter’s death.

“Alec Baldwin continues to increase my pain with his refusal to apologise to me and his refusal to take responsibility for her death,” she said.

In October 2021, Baldwin was rehearsing a scene on set with a gun, which was supposed to be loaded with dummy rounds, when the weapon fired a live round, killing Hutchins and wounding Souza.

How a live bullet got into the gun remains a mystery.

In July, a judge dismissed an involuntary manslaughter case against Baldwin after police and prosecutors withheld evidence from the defence.

In March, the armourer on the film set, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and is serving an 18-month prison sentence. She has appealed against the verdict.

Set in 1882 in Wyoming, Rust tells the story of a 13-year-old boy who is sentenced to be hanged after he accidentally kills a rancher. He goes on the run with his grandfather, Baldwin’s Harlan Rust.

Souza, who attended the premiere with Bianca Cline who replaced Hutchins as the film’s cinematographer, refused several requests to complete the film after the tragic shooting, said Hutchins’ husband, Matt, convinced him to complete the film, which is dedicated to her.

“At first I didn’t really know if I wanted to do this, to be honest, but as I found out that this is what Matt wanted, this is what the family wanted, it started to change the equation for me,” he told the BBC.

“It was going to be more about honouring her legacy and her memory, saying that her final work was completed and that began to change my mind on things,” he added.

Both he and Cline acknowledged that many in the industry were uncomfortable with his decision.

“Everybody’s angry, we’re angry as well. It’s something tragic and it’s hard to deal with. Some people think it’s better to deal with that through not participating and other people think it’s honourable like we do. I don’t think there’s any right or wrong answer to this,” Cline told the BBC.

Before the screening, Rachel Mason, a close friend of Hutchins who filmed a documentary about the making of Rust, recalled how difficult it was to complete the movie with all the controversy surrounding it.

She said some crew members told her not to film them on the closed set, in case, she said, it was discovered they had worked on Rust “and I might never get a job again”.

Crew came back to finish the filming after they realised it might help Hutchins’ family.

“She had this amazing gift of becoming friends very, very fast with people. And they all fell in love with her,” she said.

Ms Mason also recounted a conversation with Hutchins’ mother 18 months ago during which she told her she wanted the film to be completed because it was her daughter’s “big work”.

Rust depicts the manhunt for grandfather and grandson amidst a backdrop of snow-capped mountains and tumbleweed dirt towns.

It knowingly acknowledges classic westerns including John Ford’s ‘The Searchers’ and Sergio Leone’s ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’.

Souza was very close to his own grandfather, who, he said, loved westerns.

Several people I spoke to after the screening enjoyed the movie with Jan, a film colourist from Warsaw calling it “a classic western”.

Leonora, a cinematographer from Belarus said it was brilliant and she had cried all the way through Ms Mason’s speech.

One viewer noted the many gunfight scenes involving Alec Baldwin could be distracting.

“All the time as I was thinking about it, especially during the gunfight scenes, it was hard not to get pulled back out of the movie, especially when Alec Baldwin’s holding a gun, but most of the time it was just a really, really enjoyable experience,” Maciej from Torun said.

In a statement, Melina Spadone, a representative for Rust Movie Productions, defended the festival against some of the criticism.

“The Camerimage festival celebrates the artistry of cinematographers; it is not a festival for buyers.

“None of the producers of Rust stand to benefit financially from the film. The suggestion that those involved in completing Halyna Hutchins’ film were motivated by profit is disrespectful to those who worked tirelessly to honour her legacy.”

Texas authorities say they are prepared to offer President-elect Donald Trump 1,400 acres (567 hectares) of land along the US-Mexico border to build detention facilities for undocumented migrants.

In a letter, the Texas General Land Office said the plot could be used to build facilities for “processing, detention, and co-ordination of the largest deportation of violent criminals in the nation’s history”.

Trump has repeatedly pledged to deport millions of undocumented migrants and mobilise the National Guard to help carry this out.

His plan, however, is likely to face enormous financial and logistics hurdles, as well as immediate legal challenges from rights groups.

The letter, published online and sent to Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, notes that the owner of the recently purchased land had refused to allow a border wall to be built there and “actively blocked law enforcement” from accessing it.

“Now it’s essentially farmland, so it’s flat, it’s easy to build on. We can very easily put a detention centre on there,” Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham said in an interview with Fox News, which first reported the offer.

The state government in Texas, which launched its own unilateral border security operation after Trump left office, has been broadly supportive of Trump’s promises to strengthen the US-Mexico border.

Buckingham said she was “100% on board with the Trump administration’s pledge to get these criminals out of our country”.

But the Democratic governors of three other southern border states – California, Arizona, and New Mexico – have said they will not aid mass deportations.

“Local and state officials on the frontlines of the Harris-Biden border invasion have been suffering for four years and are eager for President Trump to return to the Oval Office,” Trump transition spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said in a statement.

“President Trump will marshal every lever of power to secure the border, protect their communities, and launch the largest mass deportation operation of illegal immigrant criminals in history.”

What any new detention facilities would look like is unclear, although the incoming “border czar” Tom Homan has suggested they could be “soft-sided”.

Facilities currently in use range from soft-sided, camp-like facilities used by Customs and Border Patrol to house undocumented migrants for short periods, as well as brick-and-mortar buildings used by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, or ICE.

County and state jails are also used, for which local jurisdictions receive compensation from immigration authorities.

Stephen Miller, the top Trump adviser on immigration who has been picked as deputy chief of staff for policy, has previously said the Trump administration would build vast holding facilities to serve as staging centres for mass deportations.

Migrant detention facilities range from brick-and-mortar facilities to tent facilities, such as this one in Florida

In a late 2023 interview with the New York Times, Miller said that the facilities would likely be built on open land near Texas’ border with Mexico.

A 2024 spending bill signed by President Joe Biden allocated $3.4m (£2.69m) for ICE to house as many as 41,500 on any given day.

“If Trump conducts mass deportations, ICE would blow past that number very quickly,” Adam Isacson, a migration and border expert from the Washington Office on Latin America told the BBC.

ICE data compiled by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University found that there were 38,863 immigrant detainees being held as of 2 November.

The largest number – just over 12,000 – are held at facilities located in Texas.

News of Texas’ offer to the president-elect comes as Democratic-run cities and states have vowed to not co-operate with Trump’s promises of mass deportations.

On Tuesday, for example, Los Angeles’ city council passed a “sanctuary city” ordinance to bar using local resources to help federal immigration authorities.

Kathleen Bush-Joseph, a policy analyst at the Washington-based Migration Policy Institute, said that the fact that Republican-led states are more likely to cooperate with the Trump administration’s immigration goals could create a “patchwork of protections” that differ widely across the country.

“We might see the divide between red and blue states widen,” she said.

Ms Bush-Joseph added that additional facilities in Texas could also mean that undocumented migrants detained in the US interior could ultimately be moved and processed there.

“If you’re picking up people in blue states, and they don’t have detention facilities available, then do you try to move them to red states?” she asked. “That’s the question.”

A congressional ethics committee has failed to reach an agreement over whether to release a report on alleged sexual misconduct by Matt Gaetz, Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the US Department of Justice.

The House committee met for two hours behind closed doors on Wednesday, as calls grew for details of its investigation into Gaetz, a former Florida congressman whose nomination to serve as attorney general has proved controversial.

“There was no consensus on this issue,” Democratic Representative Susan Wild told reporters, adding that a vote had been taken but the bipartisan committee remained split along party lines.

She said they would meet again on 5 December. It is unclear whether they could release the report into Gaetz, who denies any wrongdoing, before then.

Pressure has mounted on the ethics committee to release its findings, as members of the Senate begin meeting with Gaetz ahead of a hearing when they will vote on whether to confirm him as attorney general.

“They’ve been going great,” Gaetz said of the meetings on Wednesday.

“Senators have been giving me a lot of good advice. I’m looking forward to a hearing.”

The ethics committee had been preparing to vote on the report’s release before Gaetz’s abrupt resignation from the House, which came just after Trump’s nomination, the New York Times reported.

His departure cast doubt on whether the report would see the light of day because having resigned he is no longer under congressional jurisdiction and the committee only investigates House members.

The committee Chairman Michael Guest, a Republican, told reporters on Wednesday that he had “some reservations” about releasing the report because it is still going through the review process.

He told CNN the committee would consider releasing it publicly or sending it directly to the Senate Judiciary Committee, but it remains uncertain whether it will leave the committee at all.

Reporters and members of the media packed the hallway outside the room where members of the committee met on Wednesday. Most lawmakers remained tight-lipped as they passed the gauntlet of journalists on their way out of the meeting.

Speaking to MSNBC afterwards, Congressman Mark DeSaulnier, a Democrat, said he had faith that “we will get to the right solution”.

Gaetz, 42, is a lawyer who made a name for himself on Capitol Hill and cable news as a right-wing rabble-rouser. He is a staunch defender of Trump and led a successful effort to oust Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy last year.

Some of Gaetz’s former House colleagues have voiced support for his nomination, including Speaker Mike Johnson, who called him a “reformer” who would “bring a lot to the table”.

But Gaetz also has been dogged by allegations of impropriety in recent years.

The US Justice Department previously investigated him for allegations he had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl and violated sex trafficking laws.

But the case was dropped and Gaetz, who denied the allegations, was never charged.

In June, the ethics committee announced it was investigating several allegations against Gaetz, including that he “engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use, accepted improper gifts, dispensed special privileges and favours to individuals with whom he had a personal relationship, and sought to obstruct government investigations of his conduct”.

Two women testified to the committee that Gaetz paid them “for sex”, their lawyer, Joel Leppard, told CBS this week. One of the women also testified that she witnessed the then-congressman having sex with a minor during a party in 2017, the lawyer said.

Gaetz has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and says the accusations are politically motivated.

“Lies were weaponised to try to destroy me,” Gaetz posted on X on Friday. “These lies resulted in prosecution, conviction, and prison. For the liars, not me.”

Trump showed no sign of backing down on his cabinet pick this week.

“Matt Gaetz will be the next attorney general. He’s the right man for the job and will end the weaponisation of our justice system,” Trump transition spokesman Alex Pfieffer said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Senators of both parties have spoken in favour of accessing the ethics report.

Dick Durbin, an Illinois Democrat and chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, demanded that the other committee “preserve and share” the report with his panel.

“Make no mistake: This information could be relevant to the question of Mr Gaetz’s confirmation as the next attorney general of the United States, and our constitutional responsibility of advice and consent,” Durbin said.

Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican who also sits on the judiciary committee, said: “I think that if they want a speedy consideration of this nomination, we’ve got to have as much transparency as we can have.”

Ukraine is set to launch a program to provide ready-to-eat meals for schools in Ghana and other African countries, according to Maksym Subkh, Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Representative for the Middle East and Africa.

The initiative, spearheaded by Ukraine’s First Lady, is part of efforts to deepen ties with African nations and address food security challenges.

Speaking ahead of the upcoming Grain Summit this weekend, Mr Subkh revealed that the program mirrors a similar initiative already operational in Ukraine.

Beyond providing meals, Ukraine aims to introduce technology for local production to ensure self-reliance among African nations.

This comes as Ukraine has already donated 300,000 metric tonnes of grains to African countries amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia.

However, the Grain Summit is expected to explore ways to further bolster food security and enhance agricultural capacity across the continent.

Despite its generosity, Ukraine is grappling with enormous losses from the war. Since Russia’s aggression began, the country has incurred total damages estimated at $1 trillion.

Trade alone has suffered losses amounting to $450 billion, with the agricultural sector losing over $80 billion.

One of Ukraine’s most pressing challenges is demining its arable land.

Mr Subkh highlighted that approximately 40,000 square kilometres of farmland have been contaminated with landmines.

Clearing this vast area is expected to take more than a century if Ukraine undertakes the task alone.

The upcoming summit, therefore, represents a significant opportunity for Ukraine and its African partners to collaborate on food security and agricultural development despite the daunting challenges posed by the ongoing conflict.

In celebrating Ashanti Month, the Telecel Ghana Foundation has organised two of its flagship health initiatives, Healthfest and Homecoming in Kumasi to support the healthcare and well-being of residents and communities in the region.

Healthfest

As a demonstration of healthcare support and community spirit, the telco organised Healthfest – a free medical screening event for a wide range of health checks such as blood pressure, blood sugar, malaria, hepatitis B, HIV, typhoid, weight and general health consultations in the bustling streets of K.O. Freeman in Ashtown.

A total of 483 people received free medical screening and health advice based on the outcomes of the checks.

The Foundation also facilitated the registration, replacement and renewal of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) for 300 inhabitants of Kumasi.

For many residents like 53-year-old petty trader and mother of three, Naomi Antwi Agyei who couldn’t afford regular check-ups, Healthfest provided them with valuable insights into their medical conditions and how to take better care of themselves.

“I am always sceptical about health outreach programmes but attending today’s medical screening by Telecel Ghana Foundation has been very helpful.

“I never knew I had health conditions but now that I’m aware, I can take steps to manage them,” Mrs. Antwi Agyei said.

Healthfest was designed not only to provide immediate health checks but to also encourage people to embrace healthier lifestyles and seek treatment if needed.

Homecoming

Telecel Foundation’s connected health initiatives impacts hundreds in Kumasi

As Healthfest was in progress in Ashtown, about eleven kilometres in Atonsu, the Foundation was simultaneously organising Homecoming – an initiative to settle the outstanding debts of recovering patients burdened by medical expenses at the Kumasi South Hospital.

The Foundation covered the medical bills of about 15 indebted patients recovering from various health conditions including skin burns, auto accidents, surgeries, chest infections and birth complications, who were discharged to reunite with their families.

In addition, the Foundation donated medical supplies such as gloves, fetoscopes, bedsheets and toiletries to the mother and baby unit of the hospital, to equip maternal health officers in caring for expectant and nursing mothers.

“The clearing of the treatment costs of patients and donation of medical supplies will make a huge difference. This gesture has empowered the hospital to work and save the lives of patients as well as deliver quality health care to those in need,” said Dr. Gyamfi Yeboah, Administrator for Kumasi South Government Hospital.

The Connected Health initiatives of Telecel Ghana Foundation during Ashanti Month are a testament to the power of community-driven healthcare.

With Homecoming, the Foundation provided direct relief to individuals facing overwhelming medical expenses, while Healthfest ensured that the broader community had access to critical health screenings and education.

Head of Foundation, Sustainability and External Communications at Telecel Ghana, Rita Agyeiwaa Rockson said, “We believe that everyone deserves access to quality healthcare, regardless of their financial situation or socioeconomic background.

“With our Connected Health Initiatives, we are contributing to prime healthcare delivery and community health support for people and communities in Kumasi and other parts of the Ashanti Region.”

Two-year-old Richmond has both thighs bandaged as a result of hot soup pouring on his pelvic region in a kitchen accident.

Recovering from the skin burns on his lower body, Richmond’s health condition is compounded by the inability of the family to pay his medical bills. His dad, Kurt Asubonteng was grateful to the Foundation for coming to their aid.

“This gesture from Telecel Foundation is a miracle for us. Although Richmond was ready to be discharged, we struggled to raise funds to clear his treatment bills. With Telecel Foundation coming to our aid, we can now go home as he heals from the burns,” Kurt said.

YARP Foods, one of the winners of the KIC 2024 AgriTech Challenge Pro, has officially launched its new cassava flour production facility on November 6.

The production facility, located in Akumsa Dumase, in the Bono East Region, represents a milestone for the budding agribusiness, which has been at the forefront of transforming Ghana’s cassava value chain.

With a production capacity of 1 toner per day, the facility is set to gradually meet growing demand in both local and international markets.

Speaking at the launch event Andy Donsah Yeboah, Co-Founder/CEO of YARP Foods, expressed gratitude for the journey so far.

“This milestone reflects our commitment to leveraging innovation to create sustainable solutions within the agricultural sector.

“Cassava, a staple crop in Ghana, has enormous untapped potential, and we aim to redefine its value by producing high-quality cassava flour that caters to the food and industrial sectors,” he said.

From Idea to Impact

YARP Foods’ journey began in the 2024 AgriTech Challenge Pro, a flagship program by Kosmos Innovation Center (KIC) designed to empower entrepreneurs in the agriculture sector with the tools and skills to turn their innovative ideas into impactful businesses.

The program is being implemented in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation. Winning the challenge provided the team with funding, mentorship, and technical support, paving the way for the realization of their ambitious goals.

“KIC is incredibly proud of what YARP Foods has achieved,” said Benjamin Gyna-Kesse, Executive Director of KIC.

“Their success is a testament to the transformative power of entrepreneurship and the potential of young agribusiness leaders to drive sustainable growth and employment opportunities in Ghana’s agriculture sector.”

Transforming the Cassava Value Chain

Cassava, a key staple in Ghana, is often underutilized despite its versatility and potential economic benefits. YARP Foods is bridging this gap by producing gluten-free cassava flour for use in baking, confectionery, and industrial applications.

The facility will also provide a reliable market for local cassava farmers, enhancing their livelihoods and promoting inclusive growth across the value chain.

“We source directly from smallholder farmers, ensuring their livelihoods,” said Andy “Our goal is not only to create a profitable business but also to make a meaningful impact on the lives of farmers and the broader community.”

“We are also creating employment opportunities for other young people within the community who work within the production facility.

YARP Foods also runs an out-grower scheme where they support farmers with farming inputs. They also organise a free training program dubbed “Dwakesee3” ( translated from Akan as big market) in pastry making for young people within and outside the community to boost employment and livelihood.

Driving Ghana’s Food Processing Industry Forward

YARP Foods’ new facility is poised to contribute to Ghana’s broader food processing agenda, reducing reliance on imported raw materials and promoting local production.

The company is also exploring export opportunities, which could position Ghana as a key player in the global cassava flour market.

As YARP Foods continues to grow, its success serves as an inspiration for other entrepreneurs in Ghana’s agriculture sector.

By combining innovation, sustainability, and community impact, the company is charting a path for a thriving agribusiness ecosystem in the country.

Tensions at the French mass rape trial burst into the open on Wednesday when Dominique Pelicot’s daughter Caroline shouted at her father from across the courtroom that he would “die alone like a dog”.

Caroline Darian, 45, has repeatedly said she is convinced her father drugged and abused her after semi-naked photos of her asleep were found on his laptop.

He has denied abusing her but has admitted to drugging his wife Gisèle for a decade and recruiting men online to rape her in their home when she was unconscious.

Dominique Pelicot and 50 other men have been on trial since September, and a verdict is expected on 20 December.

During an emotional day in court in Avignon, Gisèle Pelicot’s lawyers gave their closing arguments, describing the historic nature of the trial and paying tribute to her courage in waiving her anonymity to bring the mass rape trial into the open.

In her statements to the court, Caroline spoke of her anguish at what she says are persistent lies by her father.

Earlier this week, with a voice full of emotion, she told the court her life had “stopped” when police first showed her photos from her father’s laptop in 2020.

On Wednesday, Dominique Pelicot was given a chance to address his daughter while taking the stand for the final time in this trial.

The main defendant said he most wished he still had Caroline’s support.

“Some may laugh but it’s my daughter I wish I could look at in the face. It hurts to see her like this,” he said, sitting in a glass box only metres away from his daughter and the rest of his family.

“I would love to see her, I would love to talk to her,” he added. As his voice faltered, Caroline rose: “I will never come to see you. Never. You will die alone like a dog,” she shouted.

“We all die alone,” he replied. “You especially,” she hit back.

It was the last public exchange between a father and daughter who by all accounts had had, for many years, a loving and close relationship.

Mr Pelicot recalled visiting her in hospital when she was recovering from surgery as a child so he could hold her and comfort her, and shared memories of her teenage years.

When he repeated that he would always love her even if she had stopped loving him, she looked ahead silently, tears streaming down her face – but did not respond.

It was only later, when the session ended, that she approached the box her father sat in and shouted: “You had two months [to tell the truth]!”

During questioning, Mr Pelicot also stated that he was a sex addict and that getting found out by police in November 2020 had “unburdened him”.

He denied that his crimes against his wife had been sparked by an inferiority complex or by a desire for revenge for an affair she had in the 1980s.

Asked what he thought about chemical submission – drugging someone for coercion or assault – he answered: “It’s crap. It annihilates everything. It should never be done.”

Mr Pelicot’s statements were followed by closing arguments from Gisèle Pelicot’s legal team.

Lawyers for the 50 other defendants will give their own closing arguments from next week. They are expected to explore more deeply the defence that many of the men cannot be guilty because they did not realise Ms Pelicot was unconscious and therefore did not “know” they were raping her.

Over almost three hours Ms Pelicot’s lawyers, Antoine Camus and Stéphane Babonneau, retold the horrific story of Dominique Pelicot’s crimes, peppering their account with literary references.

“Everyone contributed to this monstrosity on their own level, and allowed a woman’s ordeal to go on. It’s the banality of evil of [philosopher] Hannah Arendt,” said Mr Camus.

Getty Images Headshot of a woman with a short brown bob, wearing a grey scarf and a grey V-neck jumper
Gisèle Pelicot gave evidence for the final time on Tuesday

They pleaded with the judges to hand down sentences that reflected the extent of the suffering of Gisèle Pelicot and her family.

Mr Camus said he was aware of the “expectations and hopes in this room and beyond” for the trial, which he said he described as historic, because “we badly, urgently want and need it to be”.

Leaning heavily on the notion of free will, he dismissed the defence’s argument that many of the men who allegedly raped Ms Pelicot did so because they were intimidated, manipulated or tricked by her husband. “Manipulation is not hypnosis,” he said.

The fact they were all aware that Mr Pelicot was “recruiting” many other men too should be taken into account by the judges, he added.

“Everyone who came into that house of horrors knew that others had come before him and others would follow,” Mr Camus said.

His colleague painted a devastating picture of Ms Pelicot’s life since her husband’s crimes had become known.

Stéphane Babonneau then described what had led Ms Pelicot – who by then was living in a small village under her maiden name – to give up her anonymity and open the trial to the public and the media.

It was in 2023, he said, when French media began reporting on the Pelicot case using pseudonyms that “a feeling of rebellion started to take hold of Gisèle Pelicot”.

“She decided to take back control of her life. The moment had come for shame to change sides.”

The will to stop hiding had awoken in her, he said, because she hadn’t done anything wrong. And she thought the details of her case and the videos of the alleged assaults would help expose the reality of rape.

“For her story to be useful and to help other women she understood she had to give up the anonymity that had served her for years,” Mr Babonneau explained. “She had to accept she would forever be the victim of the Mazan rapes.”

The lawyer also urged judges not to accept that the defendants had made a “mistake” when – as some have said – they raped Ms Pelicot involuntarily or “out of stupidity or ignorance”.

“If you accept the right to make a mistake, what will stop another man tomorrow from saying that when a woman told him ‘no’ he actually understood ‘yes’? That he also made a mistake?”

“I ask you to reject the right to make mistakes which would put society in danger – and at the risk of seeing more Gisèle Pelicots,” Mr Babonneau said.

He ended by paying tribute to Ms Pelicot and said the trial would be a “legacy” for future generations: “They will hear the name Gisèle Pelicot, they will hear about her courage and about the price she paid.”

Turning to look at Ms Pelicot, he said: “You did your job. You went beyond what was expected of you.”

“Now, pass on the torch to the others to carry on the fight you never chose.”

Gisèle Pelicot, to his right, wiped her eyes.

In the heart of Northern Ghana, the Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion (SOCO) Project is working to strengthen the bonds that hold communities together and to build resilience against economic and social challenges.

Through an array of youth engagement initiatives, cultural celebrations, and sports activities, SOCO is empowering communities across the Upper West, Upper East, Northern, North East, Savannah, and Oti Regions, fostering a spirit of unity and mutual understanding among diverse groups.

Implemented by the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development (MLGDRD), the SOCO Project is part of a larger regional initiative encompassing Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, and Benin, with a total investment of $450 million by the World Bank, of which Ghana has been allocated $150 million.

The project aims to address the complex factors driving fragility in these regions, including economic instability, climate risks, and social inequality.

One of the SOCO project’s core objectives has been to encourage social cohesion and prevent divisive forces from destabilizing communities. Notable among these initiatives are 20 events dubbed “SOCO Games” and 15 cultural festivals hosted across the selected project regions.

The project has also provided over 8,000 community members with spaces to connect, celebrate, and engage in healthy competition.

SOCO Project promotes peace among youth in northern Ghana ahead of elections

These sports and cultural gatherings not only create a sense of unity but also serve as a practical measure to keep the youth actively involved in positive community life, reducing the risk of them engaging in divisive or extremist behaviours.

Additionally, these gatherings bridge divides between different cultural and ethnic groups, promoting a collective sense of identity and purpose that transcends individual, ethnic and religious differences.

SOCO project has also inaugurated two Youth Parliaments in West Mamprusi and Nabdam Districts with about 14 more to be inaugurated in the second cycle of implementation.

The SOCO Project has funded eleven 11 Youth Parliamentary sessions in its first year of implementation. These parliaments give young people a formal voice in local governance, allowing them to engage in discussions on pressing issues, propose solutions, and play an active role in decisions affecting their lives and communities.

The Youth Parliament model provides youth with a sense of agency and belonging, fostering positive civic engagement rather than allowing frustrations to potentially turn toward divisive actions.

Further reinforcing its commitment to peace, the SOCO Project has organized 10 inter-community dialogues across the regions, inviting diverse groups to partake in conversations aimed at promoting mutual understanding, respect, and peace.

In communities where resources are limited and pressures are high, these dialogue sessions provide an essential platform for addressing misunderstandings and grievances in a controlled, constructive environment.

As political campaigns intensify, MLGDRD remains focused on the importance of these SOCO-led peace-building efforts.

Recognising that community and youth engagements are critical to maintaining a peaceful atmosphere before, during and after the 2024 election.

The ministry is actively working to expand these initiatives and deepen SOCO’s reach to ensure that as many young people as possible have the support and guidance they need to build peace and stability within the Northern parts of Ghana.

With the focus on youth inclusion, SOCO is not only reducing vulnerability to extremism but is also investing in the long-term social cohesion and resilience of northern Ghana.

As the nation approaches a critical political period, the SOCO project’s initiatives are paving the way for a safer, more united future, one where the young people of northern Ghana are equipped to lead their communities with empathy, respect, and a shared vision for peace.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has sentenced the former head of the Islamic police in Mali’s historic city of Timbuktu to 10 years in prison for war crimes.

Prosecutors said al-Hassan ag Abdoul Aziz ag Mohamed ag Mahmoud led a “reign of terror” in the city after it was overrun in 2012 by the al-Qaeda-linked Ansar Dine group.

He was found guilty in June this year of torture, overseeing public amputations by machete and the brutal floggings of residents, including children.

Hassan, aged 47, was acquitted on charges of rape and sexual slavery, as well as destroying Timbuktu’s ancient mausoleums.

Hassan looked emotionless after his sentence was read out on Wednesday, at the ICC in The Hague, Netherlands.

The jail term “is proportionate to the gravity of the crimes and the individual circumstances and culpability of Mr Al Hassan,” said presiding judge Kimberly Prost.

“It adequately reflects the strong condemnation by the international community for the crimes committed by him and acknowledges the significant harm and suffering caused to the victims,” she added.

Some rights groups had expressed disappointment that Hassan was charged but then acquitted of gender-based crimes.

According to the AFP news agency, the court heard that some women were arrested then raped in detention under the rule of Ansar Dine.

The ICC ruled that crimes of sexual violence had taken place, but Hassan was not found to bear responsibility for them.

Hassan has 30 days to appeal against the judgement and reparations to the victims will be addressed in due course.

He was handed over to the ICC in 2018 by the Malian authorities – five years after French troops helped liberate Timbuktu from the jihadists.

Ansar Dine was one of several Islamist militant groups to exploit an ethnic Tuareg uprising to take over cities in northern Mali.

Another Islamist militant leader who destroyed ancient shrines in Timbuktu was sentenced to nine years in jail in 2016.

Ahmad al-Faqi al-Mahdi admitted to leading fighters who destroyed historic mausoleums at the world heritage site in Mali in 2012.

Timbuktu was a major centre of Islamic learning between the 13th and 17th Centuries and was added to the Unesco world heritage list in 1988.

Prominent Ugandan opposition figure Kizza Besigye has appeared before a military court in the capital, Kampala, where he has denied charges that include the illegal possession of firearms and negotiating to buy arms abroad.

His appearance comes after his wife said he was kidnapped in neighbouring Kenya last Saturday and sent back home where was being held in a military jail.

In a post on X, Winnie Byanyima wrote that her 68-year-old husband had been seized in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, during a book launch event – and she demanded the Ugandan government free him.

Besigye was told during the military court hearing, held amid heavy security, that he would remain in custody until 2 December.

Besigye – who has contested and lost four presidential elections against President Yoweri Museveni – appeared along with his co-accused, opposition politician Obedi Lutale, who also denied the charges.

Kizza Besigye demanded that he be tried in a civilian court if he had to face charges, but he was overruled

The four counts they face include being found with two pistols and ammunition in a hotel in the Kenyan capital and negotiating for arms with foreigners in the Swiss city of Geneva, the Greek capital, Athens, and Nairobi.

On his arrival at the Makindye military court – after being incommunicado for days, Besigye waved to the gathered journalists and senior members of his Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party.

As the hearing got underway, Besigye objected to being tried in a court-martial, saying that if there were any charges against him, he should be tried in a civilian court.

But he was overruled and the hearing continued.

Earlier, his wife, a respected human rights advocate and executive director of UNAids – the joint UN programme set up to eradicate the disease, had said in her tweet: “He is not a soldier. Why is he being held in a military jail?”

Besigye used to be Museveni’s personal doctor but went on to become an opposition leader and has referred to the leader of the East African country, who has been in power since 1986, as a “dictator”.

He has alleged that previous presidential elections were rigged – a claim denied by the government – and has been arrested on numerous occasions in the past.

On one occasion he was shot in the hand; on another, he suffered eye injuries after being doused in pepper spray.

The authorities have accused him of provoking them, and he has been charged with inciting violence.

Besigye’s alleged kidnapping has raised concerns in Kenya, where rights groups have voiced alarm recently after a spate of forced deportations from the country, once regarded as a safe haven for refugees from across the region, and further afield.

Kenya’s state-funded human rights body, the KNHRC, has expressed concern over Besigye’s case.

The Pan-African Opposition Leaders Solidarity Network also said the matter was “deeply disturbing and of grave concern”, adding that abductions by state security forces were not the legal way for cooperation between Uganda and Kenya.

Kampala Mayor Erias Lukwago, one of Besigye’s close political allies, has demanded a response from the Kenyan government over the issue.

“The manner and circumstances surrounding his arrest are really disturbing to us… [it] is shrouded in mystery. The government of Kenya owes us an explanation,” he said.

But Kenyan government spokesman Isaac Mwaura told the BBC he was not aware of any abduction and the top civil servant in the foreign affairs ministry, Korir Sing’oei, said he had not even been aware Besigye was in the country.

“Kizza Besigye visits Kenya many times, he is a leader who has friends, family here… [but] he didn’t tell us that he was coming to Kenya as the foreign affairs ministry, or that he needed any facilitation. We understand him, we value him and we hope that his situation can be resolved by the neighbouring country,” Sing’oei told the BBC.

Besigye has been less active in politics in the last couple of years and did not contest the 2021 election, telling his supporters in April that he had taken a political break.

But he announced he was returning to the political fray for the next two years to sort out the “chaos” in his party, which has split into two factions.

He said he wanted to retire at 70 and would “push hard” to help Ugandans in the little time he had.

With no end in sight to the civil war in Sudan, the country’s footballers have offered a glimmer of hope to their compatriots thanks to their unlikely qualification for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

The conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces militia began in April last year and has forced over 11 million people from their homes.

Aid workers say it has created the world’s worst humanitarian crisis – with the leading cause of death across the country being preventable disease and starvation.

Yet despite that backdrop, coupled with being forced to play their home ties outside of Sudan and the suspension of the domestic league, the Falcons of Jediane will represent their nation at the 2025 Afcon in Morocco.

“It’s something that’s consistently in our minds. Our families are still affected by the war,” forward Abobakar Eisa told Newsday on the BBC World Service.

“The manager always says: ‘When you’re putting on the shirt, you don’t just do it for your family and yourselves. You do it for everyone else’s family, and everyone in Sudan – for your whole country – to lift their spirits up.’

“We’re doing that through football, which is a beautiful thing. We know we’re playing for a much bigger cause.”

A draft United Nations Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in Sudan has been vetoed by Russia – a move which British foreign secretary David Lammy described as a “disgrace”.

Meanwhile, a recent study says the number of people killed since the conflict started is significantly higher than previously reported, with United States special envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello saying some estimates suggested up to 150,000 people had been killed.

“[My] family had to migrate to Egypt because you could walk out in the street and there’d be gunshots, or there’d be gunshots flying through windows or walls,” Eisa said.

“It’s very, very dangerous. We’re hoping it gets settled quickly, so people can find peace.

“It’s painful to speak about these things, but you have to think that things are going to get better.”

Upsetting the odds – and Ghana

Sudan have been well supported in their ‘home’ games in the 2025 Afcon campaign

Sudan, ranked 110th in the world, was the third seed in their group when the 2025 Afcon qualifying draw was made in July.

However, taking four points from a double-header against four-time Nations Cup winners Ghana last month put the team, which is coached by former Black Stars player and manager Kwesi Appiah, a point away from reaching the finals.

Appiah’s side fell to a damaging 4-0 defeat away against Niger last week, but Eisa said the squad remained positive heading into their final game against already-qualified Angola on Monday.

“The Niger game took us by surprise,” the 28-year-old, who plays his club football in Thailand, explained.

“On the way home, we said to ourselves we’re more than capable. We knew we had pressure, but at the same time we knew we could get the job done.”

Sudan ground out a 0-0 draw in Benghazi, at their makeshift home stadium, to seal second spot in Group F.

Eisa said the side has fed off the support of the Sudanese diaspora in their two qualifiers hosted in Libya – as well as local supporters – after starting their campaign in South Sudan.

'Bigger cause' of civil war drives Sudan's Afcon dream

“We’ve had a really big following,” he added.

“Obviously it’s not home, it’s not Sudan, but at the same time, it does feel like that with the support that they show and bring to us.

“[Against Angola it] was very loud. We couldn’t hear ourselves.”

Taking on the continent

The delayed 2021 Afcon was Sudan’s most recent outing at the continental showpiece, a campaign that ended in the group stage.

“As a kid, you grow up watching the Africa Cup of Nations,” said Eisa, who was not involved last time around.

“To actually be a part of history, and with what’s going on in Sudan, is an amazing feeling.”

Next year’s finals in Morocco will not kick off until 21 December, a delay which Eisa described as “annoying” given the mood amongst the squad.

Yet, despite their handicaps, Sudan are also performing admirably in preliminaries for the 2026 Fifa World Cup.

They sit top of Group B, ahead of 2021 Afcon winners Senegal and two-time continental champions DR Congo, with the group winners assured of a place at the tournament in Canada, Mexico and the USA.

The Teranga Lions are scheduled to travel to face Sudan in March’s international window.

“Our attention quickly goes to that game,” Eisa said.

“It’s like we’ve actually got no time to think about the Afcon at this moment. Senegal are probably the favourites of the group, so we need to show what we’re about.”

With the Nations Cup to look forward to, booking a first-ever World Cup appearance would be all the more remarkable given Sudan’s circumstances – and bring some much needed pride to a nation riven by war.

The gold-capped tooth of Patrice Lumumba, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s independence hero, is safe and has not been stolen, his daughter has told the BBC.

The news comes as a relief to a nation gripped by fear that the only remains of the country’s revered first prime minister had been swiped after his mausoleum in the capital, Kinshasa, was vandalised on Monday night.

But Juliana Lumumba said previous concerns about the site’s security had prompted the family to move the tooth to a more secure location.

The tooth was only returned to the Lumumba family by former colonial power Belgium two years ago – and had been placed in the special memorial building.

Lumumba was much loved not just by many at home but across Africa for his outspoken criticism of colonialism – and he became an icon of pan-Africanism.

He was seen as a symbol of change and hope after the harrowing years under Belgian rule, during which millions of Congolese people died or were brutalised.

But within months of the country’s independence from Belgium in 1960, he was toppled as prime minister.

At the age of 35, he was shot by a firing squad in January 1961, with the tacit backing of Belgium.

His body was then dissolved in acid, but Belgian police officer Gerard Soete, who oversaw the destruction, took the tooth as a macabre memento.

The return of Lumumba’s gold tooth in June 2022 was a cause for celebration in DR Congo – and it was taken on a tour of the vast country so people could pay their respects.

The vandalism of the mausoleum has caused outrage – and when Culture Minister Yolande Elebe Mandembo announced on Tuesday that an investigation had been launched, many feared the worst.

Footage circulated showing that a glass door had been smashed to get access to the chamber where a coffin could be seen.

But Ms Lumumba sought to reassure people on Wednesday – saying her father’s tooth had not been there at the time of the break-in.

Nonetheless, she told the BBC she felt “anger and sadness” that her father’s grave had been disrespected.

The gold tooth of Patrice Lumumba – pictured here in 2016 – had been preserved in a padded box by Belgian police officer Gerard Soete

Now 69, she spent years lobbying Belgium for the return of the tooth.

“Patrice Lumumba sacrificed himself for the sovereignty and independence of his country and the Congolese,” she said.

“This is so unrepresentative of our culture, which respects the graves of our dearly departed.”

Local authorities say four suspects have been arrested over the desecration, but their identities have not been made public.

Ms Lumumba said the Lumumba Foundation wanted to take over management of the mausoleum because of security worries and had been lobbying the government to do so.

President Akufo-Addo has applauded the Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison and his two deputies, Dr. Maxwell Opoku-Afari and Elsie Awadzi for prudently managing the monetary economy in the storm of economic challenges.

The President also commended the leadership of the Central Bank and the entire staff for their professionalism and dedication to work.

Speaking at the commissioning of the new headquarters of the Bank of Ghana branded the ‘The Bank Square’, the President expressed optimism that inflation will ease in the coming months as a result of prudent monetary policy and other measures implemented.

The Bank Square’s commissioning marks a broader vision of progress. It reflects Ghana’s ambitions to position itself as a regional financial powerhouse.

With facilities designed to meet international standards, the new headquarters will bolster the Central Bank’s ability to implement reforms, enhance regulatory frameworks, and attract investments.

President Akufo-Addo said the imposing architectural marvel, located in the heart of the capital, is poised to become a symbol of the nation’s economic strength and a beacon of financial innovation.

Addressing a distinguished audience, he lauded the new edifice as a testament to the Central Bank’s enduring relevance and commitment to modernising Ghana’s financial institutions.

He emphasised the historical significance of the Bank of Ghana, established in 1957 at the dawn of the country’s independence, as a custodian of Ghana’s monetary stability and economic resilience.

The journey to this momentous achievement, President Akufo-Addo revealed, was driven by the growing demands and complexities of the Central Bank’s operations over six decades.

He added that the old headquarters, while historically significant, had become inadequate, and therefore this new complex, crafted by Ghanaian architectural powerhouse GoldKey Properties under the leadership of Kwaku Bediako, signals a transformative era for the Bank of Ghana.

“This structure, built by Ghanaians for Ghanaians, stands as a landmark of pride,” the President further said.

He urged all stakeholders to draw inspiration from The Bank Square as they continue to build a stable, inclusive, and prosperous economy.

In conclusion, President Akufo-Addo expressed hope that The Bank Square would inspire future generations to strive for excellence in service to the nation.

As the new headquarters begins its operations, it symbolizes not only the growth of Ghana’s financial sector but also the collective aspiration for a robust and resilient economy.

The Deputy Director of Policy Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation at the Ghana National Commission on Small Arms, Gyebi Asante, has raised concerns over the confiscation of guns and live ammunition at the Tema Port.

According to him, there have been multiple engagements on various platforms to raise awareness among Ghanaians that importing weapons into the country without proper authorisation is illegal.

Speaking on JoyFM’s Top Story on Wednesday, Mr Asante said such incidents pose a serious threat to the national security of the country and should not be occurring.

“It is a crime, and according to the Criminal Offences Act, it is a first-degree felony,” he stated.

His remarks follow the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) seizure of a 40-foot container at the Tema Port.

The container, numbered MEDU4496951, was shipped from the United States and falsely declared to contain vehicles and personal effects. Upon inspection on 4 November 2024, officials discovered 53 pistols, 74 magazines, and 65 live rounds of ammunition concealed in suitcases.

The operation resulted from thorough investigations conducted by the GRA’s Intelligence and Preventive Units.

The Commissioner of Customs, Brigadier General Zibrim Ayorrogo, confirmed the development, saying, “Arrests have been made, and investigations are ongoing to unravel the full details of the shipment and its intended recipients.”

In light of this, Mr Asante urged those involved in illegal arms smuggling to desist, warning, “when it gets into the country, you will never know where these weapons will end.”

Commenting on the current political climate and the upcoming 7 December general elections, Mr Asante stressed the need for peace elections.

He urged Ghanaians to ensure the country maintains the peace it currently enjoys.

“This is not the time to introduce any weapons into the elections. We are just going to exercise our franchise and express our opinion for who we want to lead us. And so we should all go to the polls, be law-abiding, vote and go your way,” he said.

Mr Asante cautioned against prematurely linking the confiscated weapons to the elections.

He stated that he does not believe the confiscated weapons are related to the December 7 general elections, stressing that such a conclusion cannot be made until the investigations are completed.

A security consultant, Prof Kwesi Aning has raised alarm over the growing sophistication of firearms entering Ghana, particularly during election years.

He believes that this signals an increased demand for military-grade weapons.

This follows the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) intercepting a 40-foot container at the Tema Port containing a concealed cache of firearms and ammunition.

The container, numbered MEDU4496951 and shipped from the United States, was found to hold 53 pistols, 74 magazines, and 65 live rounds of ammunition hidden within suitcases.

In an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Wednesday, Mr Aning said every electoral year since the beginning of the Fourth Republic has witnessed a surge in the inflow of small arms into the country.

However, prosecutions for illegal firearm possession remain minimal, with little to no accountability for those arrested, undermining deterrence efforts.

Additionally, he pointed to the sophistication of weapons seized in recent years, emphasizing that criminal elements are increasingly acquiring military-grade firearms.

He attributed this to the influence of powerful backers and a lack of sustained attention on the issue.

“So this particular container and the criminality around the use of false identification and the types of guns shows that the appetite for more sophisticated military-grade guns is on the increase because people know they would go scot-free.

“They are well connected. They have godfathers that protect them and we will make the hullabaloo and tomorrow, something will happen then we will all forget about it,” he said.

The security expert also expressed concern about the broader regional context, with West Africa experiencing significant shifts in arms flows over the past decade.

The consultant referenced findings from research conducted in the last decade noting that around 2 million unregistered guns were uncovered in Ghana.

He stressed that while the current situation may seem small compared to the broader West African arms crisis, “it remains a serious concern for Ghana’s security”, particularly in light of rising violent extremism and terrorism in the Sahel.

The newly commissioned Flower Pot Interchange has significantly eased traffic along a stretch of the Spintex Road and improved connectivity to areas such as Tema, East Legon, Teshie, and Cantonments.

But it has brought with it a new challenge: managing hawkers and traders who have long operated along the route.

Barely 24 hours after its opening, a trader was spotted selling coconuts in the median, sparking widespread discussions across traditional and social media platforms.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Titus Glover, issued a stern warning against hawking at the interchange and followed up with a visit to the scene.

During the visit, he directed police officers to arrest any hawkers defying his orders.

A viral image of a young woman selling coconuts under the interchange provoked the minister’s ire, leading him to demolish her makeshift table in frustration.

This incident has drawn mixed reactions from the public, with some supporting the minister’s strict stance to maintain order and others criticizing the harshness of his actions.

The Flower Port Interchange, while celebrated for its infrastructural benefits, has inadvertently become a focal point for debates on urban planning, street vending, and governance.

During the commissioning on Tuesday, he said “I don’t want to see kiosks and containers littered all over the place to destroy the beauty of this edifice.”

But after today’s outburst, Mr Titus Glover spoke to JoyNews after his one-man demolition exercise.

“I was going to Dodowa for a programme when I had calls and pictorial evidence of a woman selling a coconut on a truck so quickly I had to rush there to make sure I myself. I went and broke down the table and packed all the cat ears and the banana into the basket and took it away.”

“I’ve talked to the chief executive for assembly that they should put their eyes here. They should position two security guys here,” he said.

Some food vendors close to the scene have vowed to resist any attempts to forcefully evict them from the area without being provided with a permanent place to sell.

Residents of Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region were educated on the importance of sanitation and hygiene during the commemoration of this year’s World Toilet Day.

The event, organised by Plan International Ghana, an NGO, as part of the broader “Stronger Together” project, took place on November 19, 2024, at the Cluster of Schools Park in Ashaiman.

The initiative forms part of a larger effort to address the sanitation challenges faced by low-income urban communities in Ghana.

The “Stronger Together” project aims to improve living conditions in Ashaiman by encouraging safe sanitation practices, reducing open defecation, and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility.

The project also incorporates a waste-to-energy model to recycle faecal and organic waste into useful products such as biogas, electricity, and organic fertilisers.

World Toilet Day, established in 2013 by the United Nations, highlights the critical global need for sanitation.

It serves as a stark reminder of the health, environmental, and social consequences of inadequate sanitation, which affects billions worldwide.

The day emphasises the connection between sanitation and essential aspects of life, including health, education, and economic productivity.

This year’s celebration in Ashaiman focused on inspiring behavioural change within the community.

It brought together local authorities, traditional and religious leaders, schoolchildren, and other stakeholders for an engaging and educational programme.

Activities included cultural displays, drama performances, and poetry recitals, all designed to underscore the importance of sanitation in a relatable and impactful manner.

A keynote address delivered by sanitation and health experts highlighted the significance of proper waste management and its role in fostering healthier communities.

The National Youth Ambassador for Peace and Development, Ambassador Salamu Amadu, has launched a peace campaign in anticipation of Ghana’s December 7 general elections.

His message emphasizes the invaluable role of peace in Ghana’s democratic process, urging citizens, particularly the youth, to prioritize unity and harmony during this critical period.

Ambassador Amadu in an interview stressed that peace should not be taken for granted. “I appeal to all Ghanaians, especially the youth, not to take our peace lightly. The peace we enjoy today is a priceless asset that must be protected,” he stated.

He highlighted the importance of maintaining a stable environment before, during, and after the elections, underscoring that peace is fundamental for a prosperous nation.

Ambassador Amadu also addressed political leaders, specifically calling on Ghana’s two major parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to foster a peaceful atmosphere among their supporters.

“I urge our political parties, especially the NDC and NPP, to lead by example and promote peace among their supporters. It’s equally essential that they communicate their policies effectively to the public. I firmly believe that this year’s election can stand as one of the most peaceful in our nation’s history,” he added.

Ambassador Amadu further expressed his confidence in the Electoral Commission of Ghana, noting his belief that they will carry out an excellent job in ensuring a transparent and fair election.

“I have faith in the Electoral Commission’s commitment to upholding the integrity of our democratic process,” he remarked, emphasizing that a credible election is foundational to peace and unity.

Reflecting on Ghana’s political journey, he remarked that Ghana has become a beacon of democracy in Africa, with its electoral process evolving since the Fourth Republic’s inception in 1992.

Ghana’s commitment to democratic values has brought about peaceful transfers of power over the years, marking it as a stable and democratic nation in the region.

Yet, as previous elections have shown, the need for continued peacebuilding efforts remains paramount.

In a personal note, Ambassador Amadu shared that he has two uncles running in the upcoming elections: Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and John Dramani Mahama. This unique connection strengthens his commitment to peace, as he prays for a fair and harmonious election for the benefit of all Ghanaians.
