Kotoko have slipped on the table again after losing 1-0 against WAFA on matchday 23 while Hearts have outdone themselves with a stupendous win in Cape Coast.
AshGold are losing ground surprisingly fast after failing to pick three points against Edubiase. The immediate beneficiaries are Berekum Chelsea, who have cut the distance with AshGold to just two points.
Olympics will see their draw as a point gained although the own goal scored will be a cause of pain.
Berekum Chelsea 2-0 Liberty
Berekum Chelsea's pursuit of Ashantigold atop the Ghana Premier League table now hits full gear following the Brong Ahafo Region side's 2-0 win over Liberty Professionals on Wednesday in a match day 22 tie.
Hitman Kofi Owusu (pictured bleow) was among the goals at the Golden City Park in Berekum for Chelsea's third straight win and fourth in their last five games (one draw) as they moved within two points of leaders, Ashantigold. The Obuasi side could only draw goalless with local rivals, New Edubiase.
Chelsea now amass 39 points in second spot to Ashantigold's 41 with seven games to go as the race for the 2015 Ghana title intensifies.
Chelsea are three points clear of sensational WAFA who moved up to 3rd after their shock 1-0 win over champions, Asante Kotoko in Sogakofe.
Chelsea's title chase continues next in the Brong Ahafo derby away to Bechem United with a chance to overtake Ashantigold who are also away to a wounded Asante Kotoko when match day 24 kicks off on Sunday July 26.
Edubiase 0-0 AshGold
New Edubiase held league leaders Asantigold to a goalless-drawn game at the Obuasi Len Clay sports stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Opening minutes of the tie saw flashes of brilliance Edubiase's attack but they failed to beat Fatau Dauda in the Miners goals. Table-toppers AshGold have now amassed 41 points, a feat most other teams most certainly could only hope to match.
The draw also leaves Edubiase on 10th position with 30 points, one point above Hearts, Kotoko and Bechem United.
Hearts 4-0 Lions
The were two red cards and four goals - it was that heated in Cape Coast, where the game because of a Hearts sanction.
Hearts of Oak bounced back to winning ways in spectacular fashion in the First Capital Plus Premier League as they walloped Heart of Lions by four unanswered goals at the Cape Coast Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
The Phobians looked very fired up for the game, perhaps, the visit to the team’s camp minutes to the game by former Board members, Harry Zakkour, Nii Ayi-Bonte II, Stephen Akwettey, Frank Onero and Isaac Tetteh (TT Brothers), must have done the trick as they played one of their best ever games seen by Hearts fans in recent times.
Prior to the game, the Hearts team had gone six matches without a win in all competitions, an action that saw them rooted at the relegation zone, (14th).
Stopgap coach Eddie Ansah made five changes to the team that lot to Aduana last Sunday and it proved to be a very good one.
The Phobians played the entire duration of the game as if their very existence depended on it pinning Lions into their own half in the opening minutes and it was not surprising they grabbed the first goal as early ass the 5th minute through striker Selasi Adjei.
It was a sign of things to come, but the goalscorer exited the game two minutes later with an injury, and was replaced by Kenneth Okoro.
Foovi Aguidi made it two in the 26th minute to reaffirm their desire to carry all three points at stake. The Togolese striker was again at hand to score the team’ third and his personal second goal of the day in the 37th minute.
Eric Kumi put the final nail on the Lions coffin as he scored the 4th goal for Hearts in the 44th minute. Back from recess the Kpando lads came out strongly in the game in search for a goal or two but the Hearts defence, led by the returning captain Robin Gnagne made mince meat of their efforts.
However, it wasn’t all rosy for the Phobians who were reduced to ten men together with Heart of Lions as centre refree sent off Hearts goalkeeper Soulama Abdoulaye and Hudu Takubu for an off the ball incident.
Hearts replaced Soulama with young Seidu Mutawakil as Kenneth Okoroko was sacrificed.
No more goals were recorded in the second half with Hearts picking all three points against Lions. The win takes the Phobians out of the relegation zone to the 12th position on the league table with Lions taking their place on the 14th position.
