Farmers lament post harvest losses

Thirty per cent of what farmers produce never reach consumers for whom it is intended. This is the result of a nationwide research conducted by the Ghana Agricultural Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress on the post harvest losses and the role of Women in Agriculture in Ghana. Speaking at a seminar on Friday under the theme Post Harvest Management and the role of women in agriculture in Ghana, the Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress Mr Kofi Asamoah mentioned the activities of insects, fungi, bacteria; bad environmental conditions and poor post-harvest operations as some of the causes of the massive post harvest losses in Ghana. He also expressed worry about the lack of recognition for the role of women in agriculture, even though they constitute 50 per cent of the active labour force in in the sector. Even though the country has made remarkable progress in increasing food production over the years, Mr Asamoah observed that the problem of food insecurity still persists and cautioned policy makers against the tendency to overemphasise oil and gas to the detriment of the agricultural sector. He bemoaned among other things the absence of a clear national policy on post harvest management in Ghana as well as the lack of credit facilities for increased production. In line with that, he implored the government to ensure that the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) plays its traditional role of providing credit facilities to small scale farmers.
