Fante Newtown are proud winners of the 2015 inter-community soccer tournament organized by Nhyira FM in Kumasi.
They brushed aside competition from 15 other teams from various suburbs of the Ashanti Regional capital, crowning it all with a 1-0 victory over Adum in the grand finale at the Asem Park on Republic Day.
For their prize, Fante New Town received a giant trophy, medals, jerseys and footballs in addition to 2,000 Ghana Cedis cash.
Adum received 1,000 Ghana Cedis, as runners-up, while South Suntreso beat Asawasi to pick the third-place prize of 500 Ghana Cedis.
Captain of the winning team, Kofi Poku, popularly known as Otwinoko, attributed the victory to commitment on the part of the players.
“We were not interested in the money, we had our career in focus so we were committed and that led us to this victory,” he said.
The team’s Technical Director, Yaw Yayi told NHYIRA NEWS Ghanaians must watch out for the team which has some national team materials.
He indicated that, “they are up and coming stars, I always advise them to be committed to what they are doing. You saw the talents in the tournament; you should watch out for these guys in the various national teams."
Hundreds of soccer fans from various parts of Kumasi trooped to the Asem Park each day for the one-week tournament.
Asemhene, Nana Ampofo Kyei Baffour, who was the Special Guest, was excited the tournament ended incident-free.
He admonished the youth to resist the temptation to abandon schooling as they seek to build their football career.
RoCARE LIMITED was the title sponsor of the event.
Meanwhile, James Hemans who is Events and Promotions Executives at NHYIRA FM has promised more exciting events for the residents of Kumasi.
