Fan Milk PLC through its FanChoco School Caravan Programme has rewarded winning schools and students from 50 schools in the Greater Accra region in the 2022 Grand Rewards Event which took place at the Harmony International School, Nungua.
It brought together over 400 distinguished guests including the managing director and leadership team of Fan Milk PLC, the Divisional Queen Mother of the Nungua Traditional area and the Krowor Municipal Education Director.
Also in attendance was the National School’s Health Education Programme’s (SHEP) Director, Head Teachers, teachers and students from the other 49 schools who participated in the 2022 FanChoco School Caravan Program.
In his introductory remarks, Ziobeieton Yeo – the MD of Fan Milk PLC said, “I am happy to share that in 2022 only, we were able to collect close to 1.5 million wrappers across 50 schools while engaging over 75,000 students under the FanChoco school caravan program.
"As we look to the future, our ambition is to collect 10 million wrappers by 2025 to reduce our environmental footprint in line with FanMilk – Danone’s vision of One Planet, One Health."
He added, "In 2024, we plan to engage 250,000 students in Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi to continue to amplify our commitment to sustainability and healthy snacking.”
Mrs. Dorcas Hushie, a representative from SHEP applauded Fan Milk PLC for this great initiative and further called on other organisations and the public to join the sustainability journey.
“This problem cannot be hanged on one person’s shoulder; it is the collective efforts that drive the impact,” she said.
To educate the students on the need to make healthy snacking choices in line with FanMilk &Danone’s mission to bring health through food to as many people as possible, Helen Korley, the Category Refreshment Manager for FanMilk West Africa, took time to explain the NPS principle.
She advocated healthy snacking choices, suggesting snacks: N – Nutrient packed, P – Portions and Sizes must be reasonable to prevent overeating and S – Safe Disposal of any plastic material left after consumption.
“Let’s take a stand, by pledging to make healthy snacking choices and more importantly protect our environment by safe disposal of any plastic waste left after consumption.
"Remember, small changes in our snacking habits can lead to big improvements in our overall health” Ms. Korley said.
Students at Harmony International School entertained guests with a skit on the need to observe basic household hygiene practices, proper waste disposal and healthy snacking paving the way for the moment the audience had been waiting for – the reward ceremony.
Fifty students from the 50 schools were rewarded with Samsung Tablets, FanChoco souvenirs, and assorted FanMilk products each, while the top 3 schools received cash prizes of GH¢5000, GH¢4000, and GH¢3000, respectively in addition to waste bins to continue to keep our environments clean.
The 2022 FanChoco School Caravan engaged 50 schools in the greater Accra region alone, sensitised 75,000 students on healthy snacking and proper waste disposal to drive behavioural change, and 1.5 million wrappers collected for recycling.
