Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry who doubles as the Member of Parliament for New Juaben South Constituency, Michael Okyere Baafi is worried about the falling standards of education in the New Juaben South Municipality.
In a recent report issued by the Ghana Education Service, the New Juaben South Municipality performed abysmally in the 2020 Basic Education Certificate Examination.
The Municipality had over 50% failure in the last BECE result.
Out of the over 2,200 candidates who sat for the BECE, only 18 students secured between aggregate 6 and 10 in the New Juaben South Municipality.
Many stakeholders have criticized the falling standards of education in the regional capital, Koforidua, and have called for drastic measures to remedy the situation.
As a result, the Member of Parliament for the New Juaben South Constituency, Mr. Michael Okyere Baafi is organizing intensive classes and seminars for BECE candidates in the New Juaben South Constituency to help candidates prepare, write and pass the final examinations.
The extra classes and seminar is bringing together the finest examiners, teachers, and well-accomplished resource personnel to walk the candidates through six subjects and prepare them for the BECE exams.
He anticipates that only a quarter of the candidates participating in the program would secure an aggregate 6 in this year's BECE exams.
Additionally, the Member of Parliament for New Juaben South initiated a support scheme for students who would secure between aggregate 6 and 10 in this year's BECE exams.
Among other things, he is offering an iPhone and a laptop to candidates who excel in the exams.
This strategy, he believes would motivate the students to achieve higher heights.
Some of the students who participated in the opening ceremony were determined to score an aggregate 6 in this year's examinations with the aim of getting the iPhone and laptop.
