A 33-year-old mason who posed as a police inspector and defrauded some drivers of an undisclosed sum of money has been sentenced to two years in jail by the Motor Court in Accra.
Yaw Nkrumah was said to have collected the money from drivers arrested for various motor traffic offences under the pretext of influencing the police to drop charges against them.
He was charged with three counts of being on premises of unlawful purpose, impersonation and defrauding by false pretences.
He pleaded guilty to the charges and asked the complainants to forgive him.
When Mr S.O Diawuo, the Presiding Magistrate asked him the motive behind his action, Nkrumah blamed the devil saying, “I promise to be born again Christian after my release”.
Chief Inspector Dora Serwaah processing said on April 29, Nkrumah was picked by the police on board a Kaneshie bound mini bus (trotro) on suspicion of posing as a police office to defraud drivers.
The prosecutor said upon his arrest, some of the drivers Nkrumah had defrauded identified him.
