The Ghana Highways Authority (GHA) has identified overloading as a major cause of road accidents in the country and is mapping out strategies to combat the situation, Mr. Nicholas Brown, Axle Load Manager of the Authority said.
Addressing a workshop organized for Axle Load Transport Owners and Drivers, Mr Brown said Government was committed to addressing the problem of road accidents in the country and had initiated a legislation to ensure compliance by truckers to rules relating to axle loading.
He warned the drivers to desist from excessive loading in order to protect the lifespan of the roads.
Mr. Brown stated that more toll bridges would be constructed in the country to check overloading.
He appealed to the drivers to comply with allowable Maximum Gross Weight of their vehicles.
He indicated that the allowable height and breadth of vehicles were 4.5 and 3.5 respectively and asked drivers to check the weight of their vehicles before loading.
