A former member of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly is contesting the nomination of his former boss as Deputy Minister.
MP for Asokwa and former KMA Chief Executive, Maxwell Kofi Jumah has been nominated as Deputy Minister for Environment, Local Government and Rural Development.
However, Ankomah Fofie says the Office of the President was yet to respond to a petition by some members of the KMA alleging financial malfeasance against Mr. Jumah when he was Mayor of Kumasi.
The former assemblyman for Ayigya, who is not among those who signed the petition, made the protest in a letter to Parliament's Appointments Committee.
He says though Mr. Jumah filed a case of defamation against his accusers nothing has been heard of the matter since. Mr. Fofie says under the circumstance it will be a betrayal of the trust of Ghanaians if parliament approves the former Chief Executive's nomination.
Mr. Fofie explained that since Mr. Jumah seeks a high office of state, he should first be cleared of the alleged malfeasance rather than be given the higher national responsibility.
When Kumasi-based Luv FMs Saeed Ali Yaqub reminded him that since the allegations, none of Mr. Jumah’s accusers could muster courage to pursue the matter in court, rather it was the accused who went to court in a bid to clear his name, he said that changes nothing.
Mr. Fofie, describing himself as a concerned Ghanaian, said all of Jumah’s accusers were still members of the KMA or ex-members and did not believe the accusations were mere noise.
