Former Ghana Sports Minister Enoch Tei Mensah says the local top flight's decreasing stature is due to the direct ownership of clubs by GFA members.
Known as 'E.T', the seasoned administrator is the longest serving sector minister of sport in the country's history. “Almost all the GFA members own clubs or are directly managing a club, unlike my time that the likes of Ben Kouffie, Alhaji Jawula, who were GFA chairmen weren’t managing or owing a club."
Mensah is credited with championing the current professional format of the Ghana Premier League in the 1993/94 season. He feels this duplicity of roles by GFA members makes transparent decision-making a problem.
“Although they had clubs that they supported before, but it wasn’t like this and that is reason why the Ghana league is not all that attractive as before,” he told Hot FM.
The current league season, the 21st since it went pro, has ended with AshGold annexing the title after dominating from pole to tape.
