Disaster Management Sectors have been urged to establish and operationalize integrated monitoring and early warning systems for associated flood risk expected between May and June 2022.
Gmet also called for more collaboration between flood monitoring, disaster risk reduction, and humanitarian aid agencies.
"Sensitize the populace of the exposed areas about the impending danger," Gmet Deputy Director of Research and Applied Meteorology, Francisca Martey said.
Madam Martey was speaking at the 2022 seasonal forecast monitored by JoyNews' Mahmud Mohammed-Nurudeen.
Municipal and local authorities in areas at risk of flooding are advised to provide emergency/temporal sites for victims.
They are also encouraged to desilt drains before the rains set in to avoid surface runoff that leads to flash flooding.
Madam Martey emphasizes that, it is imperative these authorities collaborate with the Agency, National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), and Health Services to disseminate early warnings and create awareness about climate-related diseases.
Gmet has predicted a significant probabilities of heavy rains with strong winds and lightning that could lead to localized floods.
According to the agency's modeling, flash floods may occur during the peak of the season which could lead to flooding, especially low-lying areas and in-built places along waterways.
"Road users should be mindful when plying on those roads. Drivers should resist and desist from driving through floodwaters.
Light aircrafts are advised to take utmost care and avoid flying through deep convective clouds that are associated with severe turbulence and lightning, especially in the noon hours.
Also, motorists should be mindful of fallen trees and objects on roads during or after a storm," Madam Martey said.
