The people of Essam in the Birim South District of the Eastern Region, on Saturday appealed to the district assembly and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to supply the town with electricity.
Mr. Reginald Sackey, assembly member for Essam Electoral Area, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Essam near Akyem Oda, said the people, had purchased eight low-tension poles, estimated at 18 million cedis for the project.
In all, 56 poles were needed for the electrification project to enable them to benefit from electricity supply, he said.
He noted that as a poor farming community, it was difficult for them to raise additional funds for the rest of the poles.
According to him, the appeal was urgent because the electrification committee expressed concern that the poles already purchased could decay.
Mr. Sackey stated that a refrigerator at the town's clinic used gas to operate, but the power was not enough to enable it to store vaccines and other drugs.
The Assembly member said Essam catered for more than 10 villages and that with the completion of the project, the place could open up for more commercial activities that could enhance the people's living standards.
