Senior Presidential Adviser, Osafo Maafo has assured the various colleges of education of government's commitment to finding permanent solutions to the challenges confronting the educational sector especially in the country's rural areas.
Mr Osafo Maafo who was speaking at the 75th anniversary of the EP College of Education (AMECO) noted that Ghana cannot develop without giving priority to education, which he said is the weapon for the nation's development.
"If we want to develop we must pay attention to education with the teacher at the centre of the whole system," he said.
He assured that the Akufo-Addo led administration will continue to promote teacher training education in the country to make it more relevant, effective and efficient as well as beneficial to all.
"In view of this everything possible will be done to improve infrastructure in our Colleges of Education as well as promote the welfare of teachers who are at the centre of education," he said.
He urged all stakeholders to support the government's aim to ensure quality education system.
He said he has taken notice of the numerous challenges confronting the college and indeed the town.
He assured that from the second quarter of this year, work will commence on the town roads and the road leading to the school.
He paid glowing tribute to the founding fathers of the school as well as the EP Church and other stakeholders.
Principal of the Amedzofe College of Education, Dr Dickson Tsey, reiterated the many challenges faced by the college, some of which are the lack of a befitting assembly hall, dormitories for both men and women, inadequate staff bungalows among many others.
Dr Dickson Tsey appealed to government, organisations and individuals touched by the plight of the college to come to their aid to build a better AMECO.
He noted that in order to eliminate poverty, there is the urgent need to improve on the quality of education in the nation.
"The surest tool of doing away with poverty, ignorance and disease and any other such challenges confronting any nation is education," Dr Dickson Tsey said.
He also stressed on the need to invest in research in the colleges as well as build the capacity of staff to make them more efficient, effective and proactive so as to help improve education.
The Principal of the College, Dr Dickson Tsey, noted that the college started in 1946 as a male institution with 30 students but now operates as a mixed school with a population of 1057 students.
He said within the past 75 years, Amedzofe College of Education has become one of the best and outstanding colleges that Ghana can be proud of, as it has distinguished itself as a pioneer for providing quality teacher trainees over the past 75 years of existence
The Volta Regional Minister, Dr Archibald Letsa urged the trainees to continue to amass knowledge to aid them in making significant changes in their lives and society.
"As you move to the next stage of your lives, remember to uphold the values of the college that is respect, commitment and loyalty."
Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, the mentor university of AMECO in her remarks said the upgrade of teacher training Colleges of Education came along with certain upgraded expectations; adding that the teachers are not only expected to teach but also contribute to knowledge, do research and also publish their research as they have always done to motivate the trainees.
