An environmental sustainability fund for Ho Municipality has been launched by the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli state, Togbe Afede XIV, with seed money of ¢150,000 from Sunon Asogli Power Limited.
In a speech after a tour around flood-affected areas in the municipality, Togbe Afede XIV noted that government needs urgent support for the massive work ahead and that was why they decided to have the environmental sustainability fund established to help in terms like this.
He noted that there is the need to have community contribution towards a well-managed drainage infrastructure which will prevent future floods.
"Ho is noted for oxygen city, and the disaster and floods really caused us embarrassment hence the need to quickly have an action taken to save the city," Togbe Afede XIV said.
He noted that the collaboration with the assembly in making sure a permanent remedy to the floods in the city is imperative, adding that the sustainability fund would focus on the relief of victims and then a comprehensive re-engineering of the drainage structures of the areas.
Togbe Afede XIV noted that they would concentrate on concrete drains for a flood resilient water carriage infrastructure.
Togbe Afede noted that it is a wakeup call for the people and there is the need to react appropriately to help reap the long term benefits of what the city has endured and suffered.
“We had a tour of some of the worst affected areas a short while ago. What we saw was extremely distressful. And the suffering that some of our citizens have gone through is so incredible and I thank God that this disaster happened in the day and not in the night. We would have suffered worse consequences and probably lost valuable lives,'' Togbe Afede XIV said.
The Chairman of Sunon Asogli Power Ghana Limited, Mr Yan in his remark, said the company has the good people of Ghana at heart and Ho is no exception.
He further stated that, they are committed to lending support to projects as part of their corporate social responsibility.
Sunon Asogli Power Ghana Limited, supported the victims with 800 bags of rice, 800 boxes of cooking oil and a cheque of ¢150,000 to support the flood victims.
Some parts of Ho suffered a heavy flood following a three hour torrential downpour on Saturday 8th July, 2023 submerging some houses and shops in the Ho municipality causing heavy losses to businesses and households.
