The Chief Operating Officer of Multi-TV is entreating engineers to acquire entrepreneurial skills in addition to their technical skills. Ken Ashigbe says engineers should not limit themselves to the running of the technical areas of industry, but get involved in the business aspect as well. He is of the view that engineers venturing into entrepreneurship will enable them derive maximum financial benefits from their innovations and creativity. Mr Ashigbe gave the advice at a workshop for engineering students at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). The workshop was organized by the 1996 batch of engineering graduates of the school. According to the Multi Tv COO, engineers getting out of school now want to be employed in organizations as technical officers without exploring the business side of engineering. “Whether you are working for yourself or working for someone, it’s important that engineering graduates prepare themselves for business and realize that engineering is a means to attaining a specific financial goal,” Mr. Ashigbe told Luv FM later in an interview. He said young engineering graduates must make substantial returns on investment from their inventions and innovations, emphasizing the need for student engineers to acquire additional knowledge in business management to be self-employed. “Engineers are employed by people outside engineering and use all our resources, and we don’t make all the money we should have made. We should also make sure we take part in the procurement part where all the money is,” he stated. The 1996 batch of KNUST engineering graduates organized the workshop to enlighten the students of the realities of the working environment. Story by Kwabena Owusu-Ampratwum/Luv FM/Ghana
