Chief Executive Officer of MDS-Lancet laboratories Ghana Limited, Dr. Paul Nyantakyi is encouraging graduands from the College of Health Sciences, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to engage in apprenticeship for improved performance.
He observed that some graduates attend job interviews with the hope of receiving high salaries at the early stage of their careers instead of focusing on sharpening their skills.
“Yes, you have your degrees alright and for the last ten years when I interview some of your colleagues and you ask them what they will take in terms of salary, they always want the professors’ salaries.
“My advice is you need to go back to the basics and embrace apprenticeship. This is the time you are going to nurture your skills; this is the time you are going to develop the empathy you need as healthcare professionals. Don’t skip that and don’t try to become professors overnight.
“Go through the apprenticeship, learn well and one day you will become the master of the profession you have chosen,” he said.
He was speaking at the 57th congregation of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) graduation ceremony.
He also emphasized on the importance of empathy in patient care.
“With a profession in healthcare, please you need empathy, please you need teamwork, please you need compassion. Don’t go and shout on the patience, they are already sick and need your support so please do that and make healthcare better,” he said.
Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Prof. Christian Agyare appreciated the College’s benefactors and called on stakeholders to support the college in the provision of quality education.
“To all our benefactors we want you to know that we appreciate your kind gestures and I take this opportunity to appeal to all who are in the position to assist the college in any way not to hesitate to do so,” he said.
The college of health sciences presented 1,479 students to be conferred degrees on the 57th congregation.
