Head of JoyNews’ Political Desk, Evans Mensah has taken on the committee investigating the circumstances surrounding the killing of protestors by security operatives in Ejura on Tuesday, June 29.
President Akufo-Addo has given the Interior Minister 10 days to provide a detailed report of the inquiry which also led to the injury of four other residents.
The deceased met their untimely death while demonstrating against the murder of their colleague, Ibrahim Mohammed, also known as Kaaka which had occurred a few days before the disturbance.
The committee members include George Kingsley Koomson, Justice of the Court of Appeal as Chairman, Security Expert, Dr Vladimir Antwi Danso, Juliet Amoah, Executive Director of Penplusbyte, and a civil society organisation
The three-member committee, during Tuesday’s sitting, invited some persons of interest including JoyNews’ Erastus Asare Donkor.
The Multimedia journalist was on the ground during the debacle between the youth of Ejura Sekyedumase and the joint-military team which had been deployed to foil and possible excesses.
He narrated events, that transpired while demonstrating some of the manoeuvres adopted by the security team during the chaos as captured by himself and the camera technician.
One of the protestors who died had volunteered to shepherd the JoyNews team through the volatile crowd some minutes to his killing.
“When we got to the scene, the youth were angry, and so they told us not to film what was happening, but one of the protesters, now deceased, Nasiru Yussif, spoke to them in Hausa, and they calmed down. So he and another guy formed a ring around us, so we could perform our duties. He was very active, following us wherever we went,” Erastus told the committee on Tuesday.
However, questions raised by the panel about Kaaka’s affiliation to social activism group #FixTheCountry as they probed the ethical basis on which the Erastus' reportage did not sit well with Evans Mensah.
During an editorial on PM Express on Tuesday night, Evans could not fathom how the state of the activist’s affinity to said movement culminated into the murder of the duo as seen on the day.
He believes this the seeming overemphasis on the ethical nature of the journalist’s reportage – which saw to the procurement only set of widely circulated footages - sways away from the mandate of the committee’s work.
According to him, the committee’s mandate was cut out - to establish the events on the day as directed by President Akufo-Addo.
For this reason, the dwelling on Kaaka's death which ensued days prior to the disturbance could not have had a direct impact on the magnitude of chaos that was being covered live by Erastus's and the JoyNews team.
His point was corroborated by a security analyst who expressed worry over the committee’s line of questioning on the opening day of the committee’s work.
Mr Bonaa believes that energy could have been channelled into probing the clear admission by Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah to have sanctioned the military deployment onto what he believes was an obligation of the Ghana Police Service.
He was also disgusted by the seeming disregard for the chain of command in the security framework, which he believes could have saved the two deceased if followed to the latter.
