Eight Zongo Communities in the Greater Accra Region will vie for a trophy in a special football competition next week as part of social activities marking Eid el Fitr, the Moslem festival climaxing the end of Ramadan.

According to Crisp Communications, organizers of the special football competition, the tournament is being organized under the auspices of the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu and the trophy for the competition has been named in his honour.

The tournament, which will be staged at Wembley Park - the newly-constructed football complex in Kotobabi, is aimed at festering unity and peaceful co-existence among both Moslem and non Moslem youth in the participating communities.

"Football has proven to be a strong tool for peace, unity and development and it is our aim to use this strong power of football to bring the youth of these communities under one umbrella during these two important festivals on the Islamic calendar, Ramadan and Eidl Fitr," said Issah Tamimu Abdul-Rahman, the event coordinator.

"These communities already live in peace and the National Chief Imam, who is renowned for promoting peace and discipline among the youth, expressed delight at the prospect of using football to bring the youth together to strengthen this community bond."

Before kick-off, organizers will use football icons, especially those from these communities and other dignitaries to remind the youth of the need not to shelve their good ways even after Ramadan, especially with regards to discipline.

"These communities abound in football talents and the competition will not only be a platform for them to unite and exhibit their talents, it will also be used to remind all of us of the need to continue to lead the exemplary shown during the holy month of Ramadan," he added.

The communities invited for the special tournament are; Nima, New Town, Alaajo, Madina, New Fadama, Ashaiman, Sabon Zongo and Darkuman.

The competition is expected to be graced by community leaders, Members of Parliament whose constituencies fall under the participating communities as well as football icons, especially those from these communities.

The Ramadan Cup will be formally launched on Wednesday July 15, 2015.
