The Economic Fighters League (EFL) has expressed deep frustration over what it describes as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) failure to take decisive action following its shift into a 'parliamentary majority.'
The group accused the NDC of missing a critical opportunity to invoke Article 69 of the 1992 Constitution to initiate the impeachment of President Nana Akufo-Addo.
In a press statement issued on October 23, the EFL criticised the NDC for failing to muster a quorum in Parliament during its Fifth Meeting of the Fourth Session on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, leaving the Speaker with no option than to either follow what the group calls a “questionable judicial order” or suspend Parliament indefinitely.
The EFL argued that this inaction not only protects President Akufo-Addo’s administration but also compromises the country’s democratic integrity.
"This was a lost opportunity to reset a failed democracy. Instead, it has shielded an ineffective leader and allowed the mismanagement of the country to continue unabated."
The EFL alleged that President Akufo-Addo has repeatedly violated his oath of office, stating that his conduct has brought the presidency into "disrepute, ridicule or contempt and has behaved in a manner that is prejudicial or inimical to the economy or the security of the State."
The group also mentioned the President’s failure to address illegal mining (galamsey), which they claim is fueled by his government’s complicity, as evidence of his mismanagement and unfitness for office.
The EFL expressed disappointment that, despite the NDC's new parliamentary majority, they failed to initiate a "vote of no confidence or pursue the impeachment of a president whose incompetence is evident to all Ghanaians."
The group warned that with Parliament suspended, both the Executive and Judiciary are now operating without proper parliamentary oversight, undermining democratic principles and exposing the country to potential abuses of power.
On the back of this, the group demanded that the Speaker of Parliament recall the House immediately, and urged the NDC to take swift action by filing a motion to impeach President Akufo-Addo.
"Ghanaians deserve better leadership, and they deserve it now," the statement reads.
