Parliament says it has acknowledged publications concerning five Members of Parliament (MPs) who were caught up in a violent protest in Kenya on Tuesday, June 25.
According to them, the High Commission of Ghana in Kenya has indicated that the five MPs and officer accompanying the delegation are safe and secure.
This was conveyed in a press statement issued by the Director of the Media Relations Department at the Parliamentary Service of Ghana, David Sabastian Damoah on Wednesday, June 26.
Parliament expressed its unwavering commitment to ensuring the MPs' safe return to Ghana.
“We appreciate the concern from the general public and wish to indicate that efforts are underway to ensure their safe return to Ghana,” part of the statement read.
The delegation consists of members of the Local Government Committee of Parliament, including the Chairman of the Committee, Emmanuel Akwasi Gyamfi; Ranking Member of the Committee, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye; Sylvester Tetteh; Thomas Ampem Nyarko; Mohammed Taferu; and Senior Principal Assistant Clerk, Anita Quartey Papaflo.
The statement explained that the delegation was in the Kenyan Parliament on a bench-marking visit when the unfortunate incident occurred.
“They were immediately escorted and secured in the Senate building and finally evacuated to their hotel by officials of the Kenyan Parliament,” the statement added.
