A local NGO, Educational Resources is assisting the management and students of the South Labone Girls Vocational Centre to produce Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) for frontline staff battling the Covid-19 pandemic.
Final year garment-making students, under the supervision of their instructors are producing PPEs for a local firm using strict specifications.
The Executive Director of Educational Resources, Mr. Kodwo Brumpon said his organization facilitated the arrangement for the center, to give the students much needed practical experience.
“Vocational education is all about adequately preparing trainees for industry, which means that exposure to real-world working conditions is a vital part of their training. This arrangement gives them that opportunity, whilst allowing them to contribute to the fight against Covid-19,” he said.
In February this year, Educational Resources launched the 2nd Chance Project.
The Second Chance Project is a Mentoring and Skills Development Project at the South Labone Girls Vocational Centre and the Osu Girls Correctional Centre, funded by the New Zealand government and is focused on guiding 57 girls (seven of whom are inmates of the Osu Girls Correctional Centre) to acquire skills and achieve their full potential.
The project aims at giving the girls a more positive outlook on life, whiles equipping them with critical vocational and business management skills.
According to Mr. Brumpon, the Project aims at halting any destructive behavioural tendencies that the beneficiaries may have, while instilling in them the desire to be productive law abiding members of society.
“The Project is designed to use proven psychological methods to rehabilitate the youth and give them a sense of purpose and self-worth, whiles equipping them with vocational and business management skills which will give them an opportunity to earn an honest living” he said.
Aside from the vocational training they are receiving, the girls will benefit from regular mentoring sessions from women who have excelled in various fields of endeavour.
