What is making most people angry about the internal wrangling going on in the NDC is that many of the people doing the hatchet job in the smear campaign against former President Rawlings are Johnnies-Just-Come, JJCs, in the party.
Ironically, they do not want to be described as JJCs, but that is exactly what they are because of the ugly noise they are making all over the place.
They joined the NDC mainly through the pressure group, Committee for Joint Action, CJA. After the NDC came to power, they were appointed Deputy Ministers in various positions. Many of us were excited at this turn of events because it marked the first time many young persons have been appointed to these positions.
Many NDC members and supporters prayed for them to succeed. In the beginning, it seemed that will be so. But, soon, power began to intoxicate them. Their feet began to grow bigger than the shoes bought for them. We cannot help but recapture what an elder said about a young ruler in Wole Soyinka’s Kongi’s Harvest.
Soon, the head swelled
Too big for pillow
And it swelled too big for the mother’s back
So, the NDC’s JJCs began to attack the Founder of the party because of his criticisms of the Leader (President). The Founder may be wrong in his criticisms of the Leader but does this give the privilege to the JJCs to smear him? “A king does not become a maniac because he puts down his crown to eat”. So even if Rawlings is wrong or acts unwisely, what right has these JJCs to attack him?
It is Rawlings’ vision, principles and charisma that has brought the NDC this far. If today the likes of Okudjeto Ablakwa and Omane Boamah as well as Haruna Iddrisu are stalwarts in the NDC, young as they are, they should be thankful not only to President Mills who appointed them to these positions but also to Rawlings who has brought the NDC this far- “The child is nothing; it is only the glory of his forebears that the world sees and tolerates them”.
The Daily Post will support these young ones to reach their zenith in their political lives. But, if smearing the Founder of the party becomes their stock-in-trade, we shall not support them and will also ensure that their actions against the Founder fail.
