A labourer has been remanded into prison custody by a Kumasi Circuit Court for allegedly posing as a staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in order to extort money from residents of Prabon near Kumasi.
Daniel Festus Agyiri was charged with impersonation and defrauding by false pretences and pleaded not guilty to all the counts.
Police Chief Inspector Archibald Kwesi Fandoh told the court that on December 20 last year, Agyiri dressed in a navy blue overall and carrying electrical appliances went to Kwabena Boakye and introduced himself as an ECG worker sent to inspect electricity bills and to disconnect any defaulter.
The prosecution said when Agyiri found Mr Boakye owed 700,000 cedis, he demanded the amount in cash and threatened to disconnect the meter if he failed to pay.
Mr Boakye refused to give the accused the money after insisting that he doubted his identity and Agyiri sensing danger, moved to another house in the same vicinity, demanded monies from the tenants and threatened to disconnect them.
The tenants became suspicious and alerted one Emmanuel Kudzo Lumor, an official of ECG at Asante-Bekwai, who found that the accused was an imposter and he was arrested.
