ECG: Don’t blame us alone for outages

The Electricity Company of Ghana says it is not wholly to blame for the erratic power supply to consumers across the country. The Deputy Public Relations Manager of the Company, Erasmus Baidoo told Joy News on Friday, his outfit has come under unjustifiable criticisms even when the outages in electricity supplies could be traced to the Volta River Authority and the Ghana Grid Company (GridCO). “We just want the public to know that these are some of the problems we have. Basically people normally blame these things on ECG. We are not entirely saying that VRA and GRIDCO are supposed to be blamed. But it is a cycle. It’s VRA, GRIDCO and ECG. We always say anytime major problems like this occurs, obviously it comes from our suppliers,” Baidoo told Joy News on Friday. Consumers across the country have complained ceaselessly over the erratic power supplies which have rendered some of their home appliances defective. They rain curses upon the ECG who they say is responsible for their woes. But Mr Baidoo said that should not be the case. Even though his outfit takes responsibility for some of the power outages, he insisted they are virtually helpless when the distribution lines from GRIDCO and VRA develops a fault. Meanwhile, GRIDCO has launched an investigation into a technical fault at the Aboadze thermal plant on Friday morning which rendered the whole country without electricity for hours. Chief Executive Officer of the company Charles Darko told Joy News’ Evans Mensah the lost of generating units in Aboadze led to disturbances across the network which triggered a system failure. The electricity generating system, according to Mr Darko is already loaded which in part contributes to the erratic supply of electricity to the country. Asked when the defects with will be addressed, Mr Darko could not give a time line but said his outfit will work tirelessly to solving the problem. Story by Nathan Gadugah/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
