The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has implored the public to help in combating power theft that robs the power distribution company of resources.
The Volta Regional Manager of ECG, Ms. Christina Jatoe-Kaleo implored the public to remain vigilant and report incidents of illegal connection to the appropriate authorities.
She was speaking to Joy News after a stakeholder engagement with the Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa in Ho.
Madam Jatoe-Kaleo’s call came on the back of concerns raised by Dr. Letsa on the increasing incidents of power theft.
Dr. Letsa asserted that curbing the illegal act is one surest way of helping the power distribution firm achieve its revenue targets.
“But there is power theft, people are specialised in illegal connections. Some of them have allies in your organisations. I went to a place the other day and I nearly caused their arrest. They bypassed the meter, I couldn't recognise it, so I caused them to pay something extra to ECG in Tema”, he said.
He lauded the operations and stable supply of power in his jurisdiction and implored the hierarchy of ECG to collaborate with the Volta Regional Coordinating Council for effective operations and service delivery.
Madam Jatoe-Kaleo responded that her outfit had upgraded the revenue protection unit to investigation, prosecution and security to nip the canker of power theft in the bud, to seal the loopholes through which ECG loses money.
She said the Unit is tasked to investigate and prosecute persons found culpable of power theft, expressing optimism the company would close in on these recalcitrant individuals with the support of the public.
“It is not patriotic to go stealing power or encouraging anybody to steal. It doesn't help ECG, it doesn't help the nation at large. I know we have a few of our people who are bent on doing these things.
"We are appealing to all and sundry, if you see something, say something. If you don't want your face to be seen, you can go to the ECG PowerApp and report some of these things or our social media handle, your identity will be protected”, she said.
Ms Jatoe-Kaleo warned against the dire consequences of illegal connections which could lead to the loss of life and properties, hence the need to desist from engaging in the act.
She said her outfit had embarked on a series of engagements to build collaboration with stakeholders across the region to enhance the service delivery of his outfit.
She said they engaged the Volta and Oti Regional Ministers and Municipal and District Chief Executives to seek their concerns about the operations of ECG and seek counsel from them.
“We also appeal to the MMDCEs and their team that anytime they need services from the ECG, they should not hesitate to come to us. Our management teams in the various districts and region as well are awlasy ready to help.
"Especially when they need to extend electricity services to some of their constituents, they should get us involved so that the best would be done for their people", she concluded.
