The Electoral Commission of Ghana has commenced procedures for establishing 25 new constituencies, which will bring the total number of Members of Parliament to 300 after the 2024 elections.
To implement this, the Majority Leader is expected to present an amendment titled the "Representation of the People (Parliamentary Constituencies) (Amendment) Instrument, 2023" before Parliament. This amendment seeks to add 25 new constituencies to the existing 275.
Earlier, the Electoral Commission had announced its intentions to create new constituencies, including one in the Guan District.
Dr. Eric Bossman Asare, the Deputy Commissioner of the EC responsible for Corporate Services, provided these updates in a media interview.
He noted that the Guan District was among the areas slated for a new constituency as part of the Commission's efforts to establish new constituencies for the 2024 elections.
“We are in the process of creating some new constituencies and Guan District is one of them. If not because Parliament is on recess, we should have started the process in parliament,” Dr Bossman said.
