The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Mr. Daniel Ohene Agyekum has reminded the Electoral Commission not to repeat what he said happened in the recent past general elections in the country.
He has said that the NDC is fully convinced with facts that the EC connived with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rig the elections. The evidence he said is also in the inability of the High Court to give judgment on the alleged irregularities of the last elections.
He has therefore cautioned that "there will be a spontaneous reaction by the masses to any injustices meted out to them" this time round, quoting the main Opposition Leader in Kenya’s recent elections Mr. Odinga.
Mr. Daniel Ohene Agyekum said this during elections by the Bantama Constituency branch of the NDC to elect a parliamentary candidate for the area.
He noted that the EC took advantage of the ignorance of some of the polling station agents of the party to manipulate the electoral results at some centers adding that the NDC will not accept such fraudulent results this time.
The Regional Chairman stressed that the NDC is going to train and equip its pooling station agents in order to be able to protect and secure the dignity and integrity of the electoral process of the country.
According to him the victory of the NDC will be determined to a large extent on the commitment and the efforts of the polling station executives. He contended that Ghanaians will not sit down for the NPP, who have become known as the worst party since independence to rule them again.
He said the NPP’s insensitiveness is evident in the numerous hardships that have been imposed on Ghanaians adding that the NDC will examine the tax system of the country and abrogate taxes which places a lot of undue hardship on Ghanaians in the face of the deplorable economic conditions.
The Regional Chairman hinted that the NPP’s Flagbearer, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo is in what he claims to be as having a degree in law. He explained that he is neither the course mate of the NDC’s Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, adding that he even failed in the university and later managed to get a Third Class in Economics.
One of the Executives of the EU branch of the NDC Group Mr. Ashy Moore who happened to be around also addressed the participants. He said the party’s motto of Unity, Stability and Development, will be determined by the composure of the candidate during and after the elections.
He said they should rather device means of chasing the Elephant out of the castle rather than fomenting division among themselves. Mr Ashy Moore asserted that it is only under the rule of the NPP that Hajj Pilgrims slept at the Airport, both men and women together in miserable conditions.
He said the NDC will only accept the outcome of the 2008 election if declared by the Electoral Commission and not any other political party. He however advised party faithful to start hoisting the flag of the party at any corner of the country to remind Ghanaians of the presence of the NDC.
The Chairman of the Bantama Constituency of the NDC Mr. Ratio Quofie, alias 'Show' said the party has overcome its difficulties of getting parliamentary candidates for the area. He noted that even though Bantama is considered the strongest backbone of the NPP in Ashanti, the NDC has remained resolute in making headway in the political arena of the area.
He therefore advised the delegates to bury their differences and rally behind the winner as the interest of the party is paramount above personal interests.
In all 142 Delegates voted out of the 146 eligible Delegates.
Mr Samuel Yaw Adusei a Bio-Chemist pulled 45 votes whilst Nana Osei Akoto Kufuor a cousin of President Kufuor who emerged the winner had 97 votes.
