Government’s Spokesperson on Infrastructure, Kojo Frempong, has urged motorists on the Accra-Tema motorway to be conscious of their “responsibility” when using the 19-kilometre highway.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Thursday, Mr Frempong admitted that many dangerous activities are happening on the stretch due to encroachment and lack of certain features such as footbridges to facilitate the commuting of residents living on either side of the motorway.

He, however, indicated that government is working earnestly to make the major highway safe and accident-free.

“A lot of things are happening on the motorway to avoid the daily perils. Perhaps it would have been more perilous to be on the motorway if we were not doing that.

“But despite our best efforts, the odd ones slip through. For example, despite our best effort, some motorbikes jump onto the motorway,” he said on Thursday.

The Spokesperson, therefore, called on all road users of the most-travelled highways in the capital to contribute to ensuring sanity on the motorway.

Citing the frequent jaywalking of some residents in the area, Mr Frempong said, “if you [as a driver] use the motorway every morning, and you get to the point where people involuntarily cross, and it has become an informal pedestrian crossing, you must be aware that you have to slow down if not, you may hit someone.”

His comment comes after many commuters of the busy highway complained about the increasing spate of illegalities being experienced on the busy highway,

The critics observed that these illegal acts, such as crossing pedestrians and commercial cars stopping to load their vehicles, are major causes of the accidents recorded on the motorway.

But Mr Frempong mentioned that government is committed to reconstructing the 56-year-old motorway to meet the new demands of the 21st Century.

Mr Frempong insisted that although the Roads and Highways Ministry has not secured Parliament’s approval, he is optimistic that the project will commence in December and be completed as expected in 2024.
