The former Auditor-General Daniel Yao Domelevo on Wednesday, March 10, went to church for a thanksgiving ceremony after being asked to leave his post.
Mr Domelevo at the ceremony thanked everyone who supported him while in office. He was also grateful to President Akufo-Addo for the opportunity to serve under his administration and his support.
Bishop Gabriel Kumordzie who spoke during Wednesday’s Thanksgiving Service said that Mr Domelevo has left a legacy that will continue to be on the lips of many Ghanaians.
According to him, there was hope in Ghana’s fight against corruption when the anti-corruption crusader was asked to take the reigns at the Auditor General’s department.
“You have set a tradition, you have set a certain pace and that is one of the things we are thanking God for. We are here to appreciate you (Domelevo) that even for short while, you have really make a mark."
"You have demonstrated to the world that indeed Ghana is not over, that there are good people in Ghana,” he added.
Mr Domelevo was accompanied by a few family and friends to the thanksgiving ceremony.
Daniel Domelevo left his post as Auditor General when President Akufo-Addo on March 3, directed that he retire from the office.
The former Auditor General, who had just returned from a compulsory 167-day accumulated leave, was said to have exceeded the eligible age to remain in the workforce after the Audit Service Board claimed to have found some irregularities and anomalies in his SSNIT data.
The Board alleged that records at the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) provided by the Auditor-General indicated that his date of birth was 1960 when he joined the scheme on October 1, 1978.
Again the record also showed that the hometown of Mr. Domelevo is Agbetofe in Togo; making him non-Ghanaian but on October 25, 1993, some changes were made, the Board said.
While the date of birth changed to June 1, 1961, the hometown of the Auditor-General was now Ada in the Greater Accra Region, they added.
But explaining the purported anomalies, Mr. Domelevo said his grandfather was a native of Ada in the Greater Accra Region but migrated to Togo and stayed at Agbetofe.
On the issue of his date of birth, Mr. Domelevo said he noticed that 1960 was a mistake “when I checked my information in the baptismal register of the Catholic Church in Adeemmra.”
However In a press statement signed by the Secretary to the President, Nana Bediatuo Asante, a report from the Audit Service Board intimated that Mr Domelevo has exceeded the eligible age to remain in the workforce, for that reason, he should be retired.
“The attention of the President of the Republic has been drawn to records and documents made available to this Office by the Audit Service, that indicate that your date of birth is 1st June, 1960, and that in accordance with article 199 (1) of the Constitution, your date of retirement as Auditor-General was 1st June, 2020.”
According to him, despite Mr Domelevo’s “forced” retirement as directed by the Office of the President, the nation remains hopeful in its fight against corruption because persons who will be appointed “will continue the fight.”
