Minister-designate for Works, Housing, and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has praised the government’s District Housing Project as a transformative initiative aimed at addressing housing challenges in rural areas.
Responding to questions from former Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Tuesday, January 28, Mr Adjei described the policy as “laudable” and stressed its potential to enhance living conditions in the district and rural communities.
“Mr. Chairman, I think the district housing policy is a laudable one. It’s laudable because it brings affordable housing to people living in the districts and in our rural areas,” he stated.
Mr Adjei highlighted that inadequate housing remains a major deterrent for professionals accepting postings to rural areas.
“Mostly, when people are transferred to rural areas, they hesitate, basically because where they will stay is a problem,” he explained.
“So I believe that if we continue with the district housing policy, it will help a lot, and Ghanaians in the various districts will benefit significantly.”
The District Housing Project, introduced under the leadership of former Minister Nkrumah, aims to address Ghana’s housing deficit, particularly in underserved areas.
The initiative focuses on constructing affordable and durable homes in all 261 districts nationwide.
Beyond providing decent housing, the project is expected to stimulate local economies by employing local contractors and artisans while ensuring that essential public sector workers, such as teachers, nurses, and police officers, can access dignified accommodation.
During his vetting, Mr Adjei also emphasised the project’s potential to offer retirement options for Ghanaians who wish to return to their hometowns after years of service in urban areas.
“Most people want to retire to their villages, but the issue is where they will stay. If we have this policy in place, it will be a great help,” he noted.
If confirmed, Mr. Adjei will oversee the successful implementation of the District Housing Project while fostering partnerships with local governments, the private sector, and development partners to ensure its sustainability and impact.
