Distribute wallet to clients-Banks urged

As part of measures to promote proper handling of the new Ghana Cedi and Pesewas, banks have been urged to distribute wallets to their clients to prolong the lifespan of the currency. Mrs Augustine Akosua Akumanyi, Deputy Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) who made the call, said the move would significantly address the perennial culture of mishandling the currency. She was speaking at the inauguration of civic education clubs from some second-cycle institutions in the Asante-Akim North district at Agogo on Thursday, June 28, 2007. The schools are Agogo State Secondary, Collins Secondary/Commercial, Oweriman Secondary/Technical and the Agogo Presbyterian Training College. Mrs Akumanyi pointed out that the printing of the currency cost the nation billions of cedis hence it was imperative for Ghanaians to handle it with care and charged the students to assume leadership roles in educating the public on the need to protect the currency. Kusi Aboraa, Ashanti Regional Director of the NCCE, commended the various civic clubs for their sense of nationalism and urged them to propagate the importance of the Constitution for the benefit of the masses. He entreated the clubs to occasionally organize debates, quizzes and cultural activities with the theme centred on the tenets of the Constitution such as human rights, rule of law, political tolerance and national integration. Mr Aboraa urged executives of the various clubs to sustain the clubs and called on school authorities to create the enabling environment for the clubs to thrive. Source: GNA
