The Director and Trustee of Africa Catalyzing Action For Nutrition (AfriCAN), Professor Francis B. Zotor has advocated for Africans to be vigilant and thoughtful about their dietary choices.
Emphasizing the pivotal role of good nutrition in one’s overall health and well-being, Professor Zotor called upon the population to pay critical attention to the foods they consume daily.
He was speaking at a training workshop on nutrition attended by journalists and media practitioners from various sectors.
The workshop served as a platform to address the pressing issue of nutrition in Africa.
Professor Zotor shed light on the significant impact of dietary habits on the health and well-being of individuals and communities across the continent.
“Nutrition is not just about filling our stomachs, it’s about nourishing our bodies and minds” Professor Zotor noted during the workshop. “The foods we choose to eat have a profound effect on our health, from childhood development to our risk of chronic diseases later in life “he noted.
Drawing attention to the rising prevalence of diet-related health issues in Africa, including obesity, diabetes, and malnutrition, Prof. Zotor stressed the urgency for a shift towards healthier eating habits.
He highlighted the abundance of nutrient-rich foods available locally and encouraged Africans to embrace traditional diets often rich in vitamins, minerals, and essential nutrients.
African cuisines are diverse and offer a wealth of nutritious options. We must rediscover the value of our traditional foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes” Professor Zotor remarked.
AfriCAN, under Professor Zotor's leadership, has been at the forefront of initiatives promoting nutrition education and awareness across the continent. The organization works closely with communities, policymakers, and healthcare professionals to advocate for sustainable food systems and improved access to healthy foods.
During the workshop, participants engaged in discussions on effective ways to communicate nutrition-related information to the public. Professor Zotor emphasized the role of the media in disseminating accurate and accessible knowledge about healthy eating.
“We have a collective responsibility to empower individuals with the information they need to make informed choices about their diets. By working together, we can create a culture of health and well-being that benefits current and future generations” Professor Zotor stated.
AfriCAN continues its mission to catalyze positive change in nutrition across Africa, guided by the vision of a healthier, more vibrant continent.
