Trouble is brewing in the Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) in the Ashanti Region, following a division in the regional executive over disbursement of campaign money, with one faction supporting the secretary and the other, the chairman.
The internal wrangling is said to have disorganised the party's constituency structures as many members are threatening to resign from the party.
Mr Opoku Mensah, the Regional Secretary, who came to Times’ office last Friday to tell his side of the story, said the feud started about two months ago when concerns were raised about the failure of a recent planned campaign tour of the region.
He described the campaign as a flop because of the way the chairman, Mr Mathias Gollo, relegated almost every regional and district executive to the background.
He alleged that the chairman failed to disclose the quantum of "a substantial amount of money" received from the party's headquarters in Accra to any of the executives.
He said a meeting held to review the campaign tour was boycotted by the chairman and it emerged that Mr Gollo did not inform anybody as to how much was brought for the campaign.
To compound the situation, Mr Mensah said, the chairman recently changed the keys to the Kumasi office at Adum and employed someone to guard it without the knowledge of other members of the executive.
Mr Mensah said he did not understand why Mr Gollo wanted to push him out of the party.
He, therefore, appealed to the party’s hierarchy to move in quickly to ensure peace and unity among the rank and file, cautioning that failure of the national executive to resolve the issue could result in the break up of the party.
Mr Mensah also called upon the national executive not to deal individually with any party executive at both district and regional levels in the allocation of resources but to channel such resources through the secretariat.
Insisting that he was still the regional secretary, Mr Mensah asked the Electoral Commission to disregard any nomination forms of the party's parliamentary candidate which did not bear his signature.
He said the party did not intend to open nomination for all the 39 constituencies in Ashariti but rather to concentrate on constituencies such as New Edubiase, Ejura, Asawasi, Nsuta K waman, Oforikrom and Adansi Asokwa, where it could easily win the seats.
Mr Gollo, however, had a different story to tell.
He accused some of the executive members of having the impression that the party had so much money to spend.
He denied receiving any money from the party headquarters, and claimed that he had been funding the party with his own money and that that could be verified by any party member at the National Headquarters in Accra.
He asked party faithful not to crave for money but to work hard, because "we want to make a mark in the election".
